OT Soccer World Cup Final Argentina France

I expected a tighter match but ARG came out swinging and never let up. FRA looks flat.

It's interesting though. They took their two goal scorers out.
I was reminded that there have been reports of the French team having an illness going around. Maybe that explains the subs. It didn’t seem to me Giroud and Dembele were the problem.

Dembele made an absurd fault that caused the penalty
Never recovered from it

So this morning I was supposed to drive 3 hours from Buffalo to Ohio for my kid's soccer game. Was supposed to miss this WC. Thankfully our coach decided to forfeit at 7 am as one parent was already in a Lake Effect whiteout snowstorm. So, now we're watching with the whole team. All American kids, only one was rooting for France from the beginning.

I thought it was a clear penalty.

But I also knew di Maria was looking for it. So you're right, absurd.

Think about the Argentina coach: he puts in di Maria for the first time all tournament, and di Maria makes a savvy veteran move, holding the ball, looking for a penalty, and he gets one. No panic in him. He's just waiting for it, and Dembele delivers.

Exactly

Why does no one use their hands? Just grab that thing truck stick a few people and dunk that ****.

I don't see how that's weak. It's a clear view of an absolute penalty. He clips his leg and trips him.

In this angle Di Maria's left leg seems to collide with Dembele

As a non soccer fan, who should I be pulling for today?

I am thinking Argentina because France won last World Cup. Is Messi a douche or generally regarded as a good guy? That will help me decide who to pull for, I guess.
At start I was 60-40 for Argentina. After the lay down in the penalty zone because a feather duster touched me; I switched sides to FRA. After the domination and beautiful Messi pass that set up #2; I resigned myself that ARG is just the better team.

most guys I know who know soccer (not me) count Messi as the best player in world today/last 10 years and some of them say the GOAT.
I hate the way that Argentina play. That foul on Lloris was horrible and cynical -- the guy should have been sent off. Also, the penalty looked like a dive. But the second goal was a good one. So I'm afraid it looks like the bad guys are going to win.
agreed w horrible goalie foul deserved a yellow, not sure send off. and the penalty was 100% a dive. But that is soccer today across the board.

But since I didn’t want either to win in the half final; I can’t say they are the BAD guys. Both bad.
Substitution of their two main attackers in the first half by France is a pretty drastic move, right? It’s not like they’ve even had much chance with the ball.
Me I would have subbed out that defender #9 who ran straight at his own goal instead of covering di Maria running down the left wing. Then stood around watching his goalie get schooled . ….But I don’t know soccer.

It's immaterial though. Dembele is running behind him and clips him.

This is pretty standard.

Calling this a dive doesn't make sense to me. A dive is on no contact. Any player who gets clipped like that would be absolutely stupid not to go down. That's a penalty kick 99.9 out of 100 times.

I guess I'm just salty lol
5 straight games Argentina gets called a penalty in favor for

I suppose it is like a DE whacking the QB lightly in the head when going for the sack. It's weak but has to be called.

But damn, the consequences for a penalty in the goal area is so severe. Basically an automatic goal. We think DPI is severe.

As a casual observer, I am not a fan of penalty kicks in general. Seems so anticlimactic. But the WC games have been exciting in general.

I would say don't fall for their tactics. I mean, these Argentina players are super skilled. Messi can hold the ball in the middle of multiple defenders, di Maria has that ball on a string. Don't take the bait. That's why our paesano is 100% correct. Dembele's decision to take the bait was absurd.
