I can see this point of view.I suppose it is like a DE whacking the QB lightly in the head when going for the sack. It's weak but has to be called.
But damn, the consequences for a penalty in the goal area is so severe. Basically an automatic goal. We think DPI is severe.
As a casual observer, I am not a fan of penalty kicks in general. Seems so anticlimactic. But the WC games have been exciting in general.
It is in there though to maximalize movement close to the goal, which makes for more goals. I can only imagine what it would be like if players were allowed to get away with that.
DPI is an interesting comparison. Imagine a WR who is being mauled 40 yards downfield on a clear DPI, he fights off the defender in order to catch the ball, only to drop it. No flag. But if he had only gone down after being mauled, he would have gotten the flag. That's what the guy who goes down easy is thinking in soccer.
