Potential Coaching Candidates after BB Retires [Update: Bedard believes Monday's outcome could result in "serious question" about Belichick's Future]

I was saying that out of jest purely to make a point. As I said, Payton's a guy who had a future Hall of Fame QB and did virtually nothing with him beyond the regular season over that entire span, so I don't understand the fascination with him.

Shula really won nothing with Dan Marino who should finished his NFL career as the GOAT. Does that make Shula a nobody?

My interest in Payton is what he could potentially do for our quarterbacks and offense. He's also available (in return for some draft compensation).

It's a hypothetical proposed by thread. Is there anyone here who is actually ready right now to fire Belichick?

I’m going to be inherently skeptical of what Bedard puts out there based on his recent history, especially since creating the Boston Sports Journal. Anyone can claim sources and he has a rather significant personal incentive to generate traffic. Observe the weasel words and don’t let the frustration with BB (which all of us Pats fans share) and “confirmation bias” get the best of you

BB the draft GM has screwed BB the HOF HC.

When Brady was here, it did not matter how many draft picks went belly up because Brady found a way to win. The bad drafts went largely unnoticed. Today, the Pats drafts are exposed to the light.
Look at both dynasties. The early years lived off of Seymour (most important), Wilfork, Warren, Light, Branch, Mankins and late returns of Samuel as their core draft picks. You could even throw in Graham, Watson and Givens as well. The 2005-2008 drafts were bad and it showed up in playoff games in 2005-2007. The 2nd dynasty doesn't happen without landing Gronk (most important), Hernandez, Hightower, Chandler Jones, McCourty (transitioning to S), Thuney, Mason, Vollmer, Collins for a couple years and late returns with Edelman as the core. The drafts of 2014-2019 were ignored because the players above carried the team. The correlation of these picks in both dynasties was that many of these players were considered near the top of their respected positions with Pro Bowls/All Pros. These were the foundations of both teams. They don't have that now. They have ZERO core players that have recently been drafted. It's a tough concept for many posters to understand.

I think it’s time for him to walk away.
I think if Kraft is a savvy business man he won’t take an apple off the Belichick tree and instead find the next offensive innovator and strategist.
The top teams either have a top QB or too offensive minded head coach.
I think this has less to do with BB the coach and more to do with the Current state of the NFL.
The league has changed leaps and bounds over the last 5 years alone.
We are one of the teaks who have not changed with it.
If we were we would of had the foresight to draft a Lamar Jackson, A Jalen Hurts, or trade up for a Justin Fields to ensure that kind of playmaker or made a big trade for Justin Herbert.
We did nothing we sat on our hands and let Mac Jones come to us.
Once the league has found out Macs limitations and how to scheme against him.
That’s the difference from Macs first half of the season last year.
The slide of the second half.
Now every offensive player aside from Stevenson has declined under Bills handpicked staff

It’s time.

Bedard plays along with the heavily scripted Felger & Mazz show. They've all become caricatures.

No, but I think it's safe to say I'm not alone in my dislike of him, or where I fall in the debate of how others also feel in terms of where he ranks among his peers.

He'd be handling the entire operation, and he's just not my first choice. Again, I don't understand your infatuation with him or why you'd consider him an "upgrade". Is it because Brady likes him? Otherwise, I just don't get why you're in a hurry to push Bill out and replace him with Payton....?

Oh look, another fire Bill thread.

Belichick isn't getting fired after the Cardinals game, or any other game. He may retire at the conclusion of this season.

@Patsgofor4 is 100% correct. Some of you people don't know **** about football.

You're overstating my position. Personally I'm not infatuated with Payton at all. I think he's a brilliant offensive minded head coach. His defenses generally sucked so I'm not sure of his impact on that side of the ball. Brees was good but Payton was the main guy of that operation. I don't think Brees is eclipsing 5000 yards with any other head coach. So I like Payton and he's available.

However, I'm in no rush to push Belichick out the door. Right now, if I'm making the decision then I'm not firing Belichick and he's my HC for 2023. The only way I would consider firing Belichick is if the team ends the season with a 7-game losing streak.

The thread is about Belichick's replacement, so with that hypothetical, I'm looking at Payton.

Bob Griese is not Dan Marino, but he is a Hall of Fame QB. He was an NFL Player of the year, two time All Pro, two time AFL All Star (the AFL version of the All Pro), six time Pro Bowler, and three time All-AFC.

Good for Bob Griese but what's your point?

Brees had the career he had because he played in a dome, I feel like we've talked about that here given the contrast in his play in the elements.

But without getting too deep into it, I've expressed my reasoning on why I wouldn't want Payton, and I'll leave it at that.

I guess I misread what you wrote. I thought you were trying to point out that Shula won without a HOF QB. My bad.

I'm excited to see the threads pop back up in six or seven years (or longer) when absence makes the hearts of those who believe it's time to move on a little fonder. They'll be talking about a decision the new guy makes - and we lost because of it - that "Belichick would never have made" and talk about "the good old days."

The executive decision that should have been made was not allowing Fat Matt to have 2 jobs and not letting Joe anywhere near the QB room.
Johnathan should have stopped that back in spring.
True, however this goes back to Kraft saying BB has earned that right. I feel the organization was allowing some time to see how this would go. Obviously it hasn't gone well at all. So again my prediction is after the 2nd bills blow out loss in week 17. Once the season is over the executive decision is made.

Take it for what it is worth. I just thought it was thread-worthy.

I gave Belichick the benefit of the doubt going into the season, but what he did with this coaching staff and how it is affecting the team especially the QB would get 80-90% of the head coaches in this league fired.

“People around this team, including some very good sources of mine who have never steered me wrong, have basically indicated that this Cardinals game on Monday night is among if not the most important game of Belichick’s career post Tom Brady. If the Patriots don’t win this game, then I think there is a serious question about whether Belichick is the future head coach of this team."

If any of the people are correct then the team ownership is really nuts to think like this. Bedard will be right slways though. If bb switches OCs next yr it will be -"Kraft made BB change OCs or leave"

Many, if not all those "posters" will not be here Ian......fyi, and imo

And to add to your great points, was reported that krafts grew frustrated with BB continuing to ignore the draft scouts. Hence al groh was involved with the drafting as collaboration. Since then the draft has been pretty solid.

This season has been nothing short of a disappointment. Mac was a on a good trajectory under a structured offense last season. He's much better than what he's displayed. Mac is more like the qb play he showed in the Minnesota game.

Those other qbs you mentioned sadly probably would have faced the same adversity Mac has had to endure this season.
