BB knows how to judge CB's- JC Jackson benched for poor play on MNF

That really just goes to show you at how good BB is at utilizing his players, recognizing their strengths and putting them in the best positions to succeed while minimizing the other team taking advantage of their weaknesses.

Looks like JC was a system CB...
I am sure that his ankle is probably contributed to his early issues, JC's steep drop off after leaving the pats is a testament to the Pats defensive strategy. Putting players in position to succeed is coaching. Choosing complimentary players who know what is expected of them, game planning for the opponent and play calling are all critical success factors. The defense needs to do their job if the team goes anywhere in this phase of the cycle. One thing that goes under the radar is the play calling, bad optics aside old crazy tongue is establishing a consistent track record of success.

The weird thing to me about JC's performances and numbers, is that the Chargers run a man heavy scheme with plenty of similar concepts to ours (rotating safeties, Cover 0, Cover 3 etc). Coaching the difference? Attitude?
Probably started believing the press releases and forgot what it takes to sustain performance. Might miss BB's game planning also.

I loved JC.

I was not supportive of resigning him to what the Chargers paid but I did want him back.

I do think he took some plays off towards the end of last year. A little apprehensive tackling on a few plays vs BUF. That was disappointing.

This year I think the ankle injury set him back some. Hes better than what he has shown. Hes def not an elite man-cover CB but an above average one.

He is playing hurt, and we should not be celebrating his benching because playing time is one of the factors that determines comp picks. Right now JC is projected to return only a 4th round pick because he has missed 2 games (make that 2 1/2 now). He needs to up his playing into the high 60% before the end of the year to return a third round pick.

Same happened to Malcolm Butler when he got let go basically...

Gilmore also was thought to he a massive overpay by the media when he signed.

Not sure what changed. But since 2012 when they got talib they gave had good CBs
He's pretty darn good at timing the market. Some times a year too soon rather than a year too late, but that's how he rolls.

Got the best out of Revis, then as he was getting old and slow and full of himself he let him go, then the Jete paid him CB1 money as he totally degraded.

By the end of his Jete contract he was un-playable, just like JCJ appears to be right now.

He's been playing injured. Had ankle surgery less than 2 months ago.

Wasn't aware of this, thank you. Does at least help partially explain it in some ways if he's still finding his way back into the playing rotation. Seems there's not much consideration been given to it potentially?

I trusted bb decision to let him go but I thought he would still have a great career outside of ne. Dude seems really talented and has the ball skills/playmaking potential. Cant say im not suprised at his struggles , unlike many of the “system guys “ weve let walk and struggle elsewhere.

I think the Chargers just paid for the name and reputation, instead of looking at what he could do in their system. I think the fact that BB wasn't willing to pay him CB1 money whereas he was willing to put out CB1 money for Revis, Gilmore, etc should have been a clue that he wasn't in love with him.

Yeah, he's really done well at that, minus one tiny exception...or large unforgivable exception according to a few posters here. But who would have thought that man would give up his family for football.

Bill will take him back for a 5th. $3M salary this year and then $12M a year from 2023 through 2026. Let the Chargers pay his signing bonus. The salary is non guaranteed after 2023 so he can cut him any year if he slacks off.

Agree, jcj was great and all but if you’re paying a corner that much it better be a bonafide shutdown cb, which I honestly don’t think there currently is one in the league right now.

I think one advantage we will have is everyone will be wary of signing our free agents and assume everyone is a system player.. So the good ones can resign back at market value/discounted rate . Prolly Meyers come back at 8-10 million AV next year.

I haven't been following, but Jackson had surgery during this season that held him out for 4 weeks. Might just be hurt/not 100%.

But I agree with most of y'all that BB is good with cornerbacks for the most part, except in that 2010-2012-ish time when he wasn't.

Mentioned this in the Week 6 games thread also... Bill still sucks at drafting, but for defensive players especially he usually knows how to best utilize them after he sees what they can & cannot do on an NFL field... Kneal Harry on the other hand...

He may not be the greatest drafter but he seems to know when to let a player go in UFA

I'm a little surprised that Staley didn't at least try to describe JC's benching as maybe medical-related or something...

Having trouble remembering how much Agholor, Bourne, Smith, and Henry will cost Robert over the life of their contracts...

It was really more like 2005-2012, with some years being better than others. Asante was a ballhawk who also gave up plays, which you could also say about JC Jackson (and Jack Jones). Leigh Bodden had one good year. Rookie McCourty was a Pro Bowl CB before second year McCourty became a terrible CB and then became an elite FS. But overall, that position during the era between Law and Talib was just a bunch of "smurfs", as this board always called them.

I also think Jackson is going to bounce back when fully healthy. Might just be in a bad system too, no idea what the Chargers run.

125 million +/- ...

Your point?

The only position BB has been really bad at drafting is WR. Everything else he does really well, except for the occasional 2nd round miss on a DB
