For the TL;DW crowd he basically says that at the beginning of the year the Pats were trying to become more explosive because Bill knows we need that to compete with the class of the AFC and with that comes more mistakes. He doesn't absolve Mac for the mistakes that he made during that time, but he does point out they haven't tried anything like that with Zappe, and that's a lot of the reason why Zappe looks better.

It's degree of difficulty, and this is what I have been thinking since Zappe started playing. OF COURSE Zappe hasn't made the same mistakes as Mac because he hasn't been asked to do the things Mac was early in the season. Zappe has basically been asked to do what Mac did last year.

Still don't buy it.

This isn't the Brissett game-plan against Houston they're giving Zappe. He's getting into/out of plays at the LOS, identifying free rushers, throwing the ball downfield (although he has yet to connect on a true deep shot). A pass of his against Detroit travelled 50 yards in the air before dropping (it fell incomplete, but it was a pretty deep pass).

Baltimore is used as the example of the offense's potential under Jones. In that game Jones threw eight passes of 20+ yards.
He went 22/32 (68.8%), 321 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT, 62.1 passer rating.

Zappe, against Cleveland, threw six passes of 20+ yards.
He went 24/34 (70.6%), 309 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 118.4 passer rating.

First of all, you don't do what Zappe did with a limited game-plan and training wheels on. Secondly, if Zappe (in his second career start, as a rookie) is producing on-par with the best of what we've seen from Jones, why should we believe Jones offers more upside/potential at this point? Maybe on paper, but Zappe is simply performing better right now, with less NFL experience to boot ... so does Zappe actually have less potential/upside than Jones? I'm not so sure.

And even putting aside what I think is a weak argument re: game-plan to explain Zappe's success, the fact of the matter is that his pocket presence, field vision, and poise cannot be game-planned or handheld.

It really boggles my mind to hear take-after-take-after-take undermining Zappe's performance to this point. It seems to me that a lot of people aren't able to pickup on the nuances of playing the QB position and identify the subtle (but critically important) traits that make for really good QBs. It's only 2-3 games, but Zappe has demonstrated some legitimately high quality QB play.

No he doesn't get out of plays. I haven't seen him give the "alert," once. (Tapping the helmet with both hands).

A majority of his plays have been one-read plays.

He is only identifying the mike for protection purpose; he hasn't changed protection because he saw a free rusher open up or rolled to the line (although to be fair, Mac still has a problem doing this).

Tom E Curran has been preaching this since "zappe fever" started. Zappe has been great. But it's recency bias. Mac Jones looked just as good last year.

Everybody is referencing the Ravens game. Everyone is using the opponent excuse to undermine Zappe performance and the same people are ignoring it to pump Mac performance.

The Browns pass defense is better than Baltimore pass defense which was the worst pass defense in the league when Mac faced it. People are saying look Zappe is throwing to wide open receiver. Receiver were wide open in the Baltimore too. And yet Mac still was able to throw 0 TD and 3 INT. He should have another one who hit Quinn in the chest.

I think that Zappe would able to throw for 300+ against one of the worst pass defense in the NFL in the Ravens.

And yet Mac Jones is getting his job back when he's healthy. Probably will make his debut next Monday night.

What does that tell you about what the coaches think?

Mac struggled in Preseason with the new Offense. Didn't look comfortable vs the Phins: Against the Ravens started out well then started locking onto One Target not seeing the entire field well. They are video break downs of guys wide open that happy feet no pocket sense Mac didn't see. Yeah Zappe hasn't connected on a 50 yard bomb yet through the air. But we know that would be a very daunting task for him with a guy like T Thornton.

With a very short leash BB likes to win and if Mac plays like crap he'll get Benched for Zappe. IF that TO Mac resurfaces BB is not going down with him knowing the alternative *coughs* Zappe.

Go rewatch the games. I mean that completely sincerely, no snark intended.

Changed a play against Detroit. Called out a free rusher against Cleveland. Has certainly gone through more than one read on multiple occasions.

You have no idea what the coaches think unless you're inside that building.

And that same OL gave Mac a lot of time against the Ravens but he threw horrible picks. Also on the extra time that Zappe is getting from the OL it's called Pocket Presence the GOAT who we watched for 20 years Excelled at that. It's a eye opener watching Zappe do that because Mac would have gotten sacked on those same plays food for thought.

Absolutely

To improve, sometimes, you need to step backwards once to take two ahead.

It was clear that Mac was forcing things. And it's clear he was forcing it wrong, given the amount of turnovers. I doubt the coaching staff was telling him to throw it to Parker whenever, but he also wanted to test his own improvement, since he got a new pack of guns this offeseason, courtesy of Tom House.

Zappe comes in and reminds Mac: Hey, sometimes, simple is better, let that newly found strenght come naturally. Boom, suddenly he is a Hall of Famer, Bailey is also a Hall of Famer, even Hoyer gets nominated somehow, happy ending

That's not the point I am making here. Of course if Mac looks like trash when he comes back BB will not hesitate to go to zappe.

But half the board is saying Mac should be benched now and go with zappe. All I am saying is slow down on that thought for NOW.

I'd like to think Tom E Curran has sources inside that building. And per him, Mac Jones will start when he comes back.

Don't be upset when Mac is under center next Monday night.

Muppet Show Waldorf Perillo may have a point. I'll concede the possibility of the coaching staff asking Mac to do more/greater level of difficulty than Zappe. Fine.

Doesn't change the fact that they've been winning and Zappe has been getting better and better in the process.

Also doesn't change the fact that maybe Mac can't be that explosive AND efficient QB they want him to be. Maybe he is who he is (which I was totally fine with).

If that is true, then who is the better QB running the more conservative offense? Who is the better QB for the team? Who is the QB the team plays harder for?

That is the real question.

He used the alert audible at least twice in the Browns game.

Per Curran's opinion. I have not seen anyone (Curran included) unequivocally state, "per my sources, Jones is the starter". He said "I think", and "can't imagine". He's speculating based on his own opinion, which is worth about as much as yours and mine.

Until BB names Jones the starter, or a reporter with clout goes on the record with a source indicating as much, all we have is speculation based on subjective opinion.

I have nothing against Jones - I just think Zappe has played the quarterback position better than Jones has this season, and for that reason I'd like to see Zappe continue to start.

Upset? No. Disappointed? Yeah, maybe. I'm not convinced the scenario that will disappoint me is going to happen, though.

How about the team's two best WR's Meyers and Thornton were mostly absent for Mac? And Bourne was benched.

It's tough to look good with Parker, Aggie, and Lil Jordan as your big three.
