Nice breakdown of Quarterbacks drafted by Belichick

Nick Foles is recent. I assume that is why he stated him. Foles did it in an era where the league went totally offense focused.

We all know why Noles Foles won that Super Bowl so just stop it already.

Joe Gibbs and Parcells won when defenses and not offenses won championships. Even teams that won with HOF QBs back then had elite defenses. Look at the 1985 Bears, 2000 Ravens, and 2002 Bucs. All those teams had mediocre at best QBs with all time great defenses.

I see a lot of quarterbacks winning Super Bowl MVPs in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I also just checked and 9 out of 10 Super Bowl winners in the 80's had top 10 offenses in points (5 were top 3). Oh, and this, 9 out of 10 Super Bowl winners in the 90's had top 3 offenses in points. Ouch.

Those defenses you singled out are arguably the greatest single season defenses of all-time. Which is what it took to win Super Bowls with Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson. The '85 Bears were the greatest all round team in the history of the NFL.

He implemented many things that changed the game from opponent specific game plans to finding loopholes in the rules to confuse and gain advantages that no one seemed to know existed and then people copied. I know you won’t give a Belichick any credit, but he was labeled a genius for a reason and he deserved it even if he may not be as much of one today.

The Bears ranked 2nd in points scored in 1985. Both Raiders championship teams in the 80's had offenses that ranked better than their defenses in points. I just showed you the numbers... 14 out of 20 Super Bowl winners in the 80's & 90's had top 3 offenses in points.

Pittsburgh in the 70's won with the 6th, 5th, 5th &1st ranked offenses.
Dallas and Miami both won twice in the 70's with the 1st, 1st, 5th & 2nd ranked offenses.
The remaining two teams... Baltimore and Oakland won with the 6th & 4th ranked offenses.

This is where I am too. Just saying, game manager is just fine. That wasn't him after 01 but it sure was for that first super bowl. Point being you don't need a later-model Brady, an Elway, a Favre (may he rest in peace if he's actually dead), a Manning or a Brees. It doesn't hurt, but it's not a prerequisite, and you don't get a cookie for shouting "It is better to have the best quarterback!" If anybody knows, it's us.

They were content to win games like 35-28 during the regular season. The problem was defenses were allowed to play tougher in the playoffs and the Colts couldn’t score in the 30s anymore. Look at some of the Colts one and done losses. Gave up 162 yards to Eddie George. Let Lamar Smith rush for 209 yards. They gave up 28 points to the Chargers even after Philip Rivers went out and Billy Volek went in.

BTW, that trend continued with Andrew Luck.

And where are you getting these stats. And how are you measuring offenses and defenses? By yards? Or points?

Bill demands that QBs be able to function as game managers as the baseline. He was definitely ok with unleashing Brady once he learned how to be a difference maker. Simplistically it comes down to how aggressive can the QB be before giving up the ball. If you are a rookie, the team will limit risks, if you are prime TB12 you have the green light to sling it.

The thing that I believe made Tom and Bill such a great team was Brady's respect for authority. He was the perfect match for a HC like Bill. I doubt that many of the other top QBs would have been as subservient as Brady. I think the egotistical types, like Manning and Rodgers, would struggle with Bill's style.

I have to disagree with your take on Parcells. Every team he took over had a putrid record and high draft picks when he went there. They could only go up. The Kotite Jets may have been the most talented 1-15 team in history. Tuna was great at picking his spots and was smart enough to keep Belichick under wraps for as long as he could.

Huh? I said Manning had his fair share of choking. But it is fact that the Colts built their teams around Manning which meant a high powered offense with an average at best defense. The fact that they built their team this way is why they sucked in the playoffs.

Manning had more post season success with the Broncos because they believed in building a top defense to pair with a Manning run offense. In four years with the Broncos, he went to two Super Bowls and won one. And the one he won, he was a shell of himself with a noodle arm.
