I pointed this out during the offseason. This generation of young players is way different than the old Patriots Way players. Edelman alluded to this last season. The team lost it's #1 leader & the remnants of the old dynasty are few (Slater, McC).

The organization has to adapt to the new personnel or it dies. BB is 70 yo & was never up on SM or technology. He's a dinosaur out of touch w/ what interests these young guys. Patricia is cut from the same cloth. The draconian ways won't work going forward. You can see how BB is trying to change (apologizing to media, public pep talks about players, excuses & more excuses, letting players go wild on SM) but he won't connect with these players. He's just too old. The generational gap is too wide.

I get that the old timers here believe that what worked for 18 years can continue to work (no .changes required). There's a reason no NFL coach has been succesful in their 70s. The oldest coach to win a SB is Bruce Arians at 68.34 years (Halas won championship at 68.9 years).

You're severely underestimating the experience and respect that Belichick commands.

It's like players playing for Coach K., Popovich, etc. Players know they are playing behind leaders and winners, and they have confidence that their coach knows how to win.

What I remember about young pups with great rapport, like Pete Carroll, is when players totally disregard and laugh at them, at anything they have to say. It's because they don't have that weight.

What do you think is going to happen to McDaniel in Miami?

Do you think players are going to respect him MORE than, say, Flores? Who was also a bit of an old school hard-ass?

SB52. That decision seems to have been made by Butler. He obviously either wasn't buying into the game plan or instilling confidence in the coaching staff (physically or mentally).

4 days ago... Bourne isn't someone that has enough cred on this team to not follow the rules. If he breaks rules and gets away with it, who else does? and then who else? and who else? Then we are the Jets. Fcuk that... I'd rather have a team that wins and loses as a team and builds character as the season goes on and then gets introduced as a team when we win our next SB.

I think there's a semantic difference being argued here.

There's no doubt that Belichick has made decisions, the results of which have hurt the teams chances to win (be it a game or over the course of a season).

But there's no way he makes a decision thinking, "This will hurt the team, but I don't care, I'm doing it anyway." I think he wants to win, all the time. His choice may end up being wrong sometimes, but the intention is always to do what's best for the team.

I’ll rephrase it as more malpractice than anything as of course no coach would try to lose intentionally (unless they are protected by tanking), but there’s too many to go into. But the handling of the end of the 2015 season is arguably the worst offense aside from the benching of Butler in SB 52. However, I blame the veterans on D for not sticking up for him the biggest game of the year.

He’s had many personnel decisions that’s held the team back. And as @captain stone said, the handling of Stephan Gilmore was horrible.

Nah. McDaniel is 39. He can relate to his players. He knows how to motivate them w/o using a big stick. He's a 1st time HC so the expectations aren't there, despite all their offseason moves. They'll cut him slack.

The problem with Bill's approach now, is that unless they become a winning team, the players will lose faith given their program is so structured with endless mtgs, tough practices, strict discipline, restrictions on what they can say, etc. These young guys aren't old school. Think about it, when these players were in Pop Warner, they probably already had cell phones and SM was already a thing.

Seems to me if you're willing to believe him about the religion angle, you should be willing to believe him about the role on the team angle too.

His drafts look poor to people who don't factor in draft position and his desire to build team depth and his relatively good success at building the team via late round draft picks, UDFAs, and free agents.

This is the only sentence in your post I disagree with. It wasn’t draft position so much as he replenished the roster with mostly mediocre draft and FA talent while other contenders were doing better. The Pats record over the last 2 1/2 years bears that out. That said, the last two drafts seem more talented.

I hear you. I just don't see the value of a mid-season coaching change to Payton, who I think squandered a lot of opportunities with Brees & Co., and I think it's too soon to know who'll spring loose by season's end.

Bourne is listening to Slater. They have a personal relationship (prob. through religion). He's keeping his head down and saying all the right things. It's not complicated.
