Marcus Cannon signed to PS

My comparison is much more about how desperate the team is at a certain position rather than who the signings were.

I understand the differences and some similarities.

A better example would be Eric Decker. A veteran player brought in before the season starts at a weak position for an extended tryout.

I don't think you can ever call signing someone to the practice squad desperate.
A few years ago when the PS had different rules, I'd agree with that. The way players can be more freely elevated now makes it more likely that any given practice squad player is considered a depth option.

A major difference, however, is they brought SJ in to actually carry the ball 7-10 times per game during a playoff run.

Cannon's on a tryout.

Sure, but it's such a low risk, low cost move. I think you're assigning more meaning behind the move than there actually is yet. If they had signed him to the 53 right away, that would signal desperation. But this cost them next to nothing to take a flyer on a guy they know would fit here if he's physically ready to go.

It could also be a long term bet hedge. If Cannon gets back up to football shape and looks good, you can move Wynn at the trade deadline to get something for him before his contract is up. But again, nothing in this move TODAY tells me they have any definite plans for Cannon.

I like the signing... He's better than what we have in terms of experience... if he's recovered from the knee injury, he provides solid swing depth... And if it doesn't work out, they we have lost literally nothing except for a spot on the PS... Which would have been filled by some other average Joe...

If Cannon rounds out into game shape, who would you prefer to get called up to the 53, him or Ferentz? Honestly it doesn't matter as the move adds flexibility to the depth options that can be gained by ps players... Call ups are limited, and the more depth you have to use for call ups, the better

Feremtz is on the 53.

Feremtz is on the 53.
Yes Ferentz is on the 53 this week... He was a call up from the PS for the Miami game, and will automatically revert to the ps Monday at 4 pm, if I remember the timing mechanism correctly... Could be Tuesday, but whatever... It's an automatic reversion

Ferentz was handled as permanent call up.

There was an open spot as you mention.

He could be cut as any player could be, and sent to the PS, but it won't count as one of the 3 call-ups.

And it's not automatic.

Maybe good insurance but probably not. Cannon was very much a creature of Scar's coaching. When Dante was around Cannon was pretty good. During Dante's first retirement hiatus I thought Cannon's play fell off to meh. When Scar came back Cannon improved. Cannon strikes me as a player who doesn't internalize coaching to allow self-coaching. He seems to need constant external application to stay on his game. Like on Ed Sullivan, he's a plate on a stick. Without Dante there to keep him spinning he crashes to the floor.

permanent call up? I had not read that... So it was just a signing to the 53? Okay... that works... they can always cut/resign him to the ps if needed as he will clear waivers...

If its one of the "two" call ups teams are allowed (players who don't have to go thru waivers to be sent back to the PS) the reversion to the PS is automatic.... which is what I thought they did with Ferentz

The Estate of Ed Sullivan thanks you for that reference. Me, too.

Isn't the more important issue the number of snaps before one of the two Swarovskis starting at tackle injure something and the team needs someone to step in?

Yes it is... But signing this broken-down old warhorse doesn't help matters... In... the... Slightest.

Cannon was a solid player for a long time. He is still only 34, excellent depth signing. Remember was projected to be drafted in the first round coming out of college until a cancer diagnosis at the combine. He was a steal in the 5th round when the Pats got him.

That was Then... This is Now.

How in the world do you consider signing a player to a practice squad desperation?
They are “desperate” that at some point in the season they may need an extra OT so they bring in a vet to attend practice so they can see whether if that need arises, he can still play?
I think you need to go study up on the definition of desperation because I think you have it confused with curiosity.

I agree that Desperate isn't the better-fitting adjective here... I would call it Lazy, same as the whole Ferentz business.

Sure it does. He will sit on the practice squad and they will see if he has anything left in the event a need arises.
Basically it’s a free test run to see what a veteran may have left if he is needed for a game or 2 to fill in.
Excellent use of the practice squad. Same thing they are doing with Treadwell. Let him practice with the team to see what he is because evidently he would be the first call if they needed to add a veteran.

I loved watching the Ed Sullivan Show with my folks when I was a single-digit midget... They especially enjoyed the acrobats, dancers & Ed's semi-regular guests, such as Topo Gigio & Ho-say Himinez...

Local tv has been regularly replaying selected highlights from Ed's show. He loved him some plate-spinners, acrobats and jugglers.
