Patriots Training Camp- Thursday August 4th

Right now, I have the WR depth chart as follows:

Algholor - Deep threat on the outside.
Parker - Red zone/boundary receiver.
Bourne - Definitely a top 3 WR on this team.
Meyers - Our best WR the last two seasons, IMO.
Tyquan Thorton - Our speedy 2nd round rookie.
Tre Nixon - 2nd year speedster.
Kristian Wilkerson - Showed promise, but will be a victim of the numbers game, IMO.
Hamond/Humphrey/Perry - Camp fodder...maybe PS material.

Basically, we have 6 WR's that I like...but if we count Slater in this group...and even with us eliminating the FB slot, I think we are cutting/trading one of the top 6 guys above. I am sure it won't be Thorton, Parker, or Bourne. That leaves one of Algholor/Meyers/Nixon. And I like the idea of Algholor/Thorton/Nixon giving us depth at the deep threat WR position to consistently take the top off the D.
I like our depth and speed. A lot better than it's been in years. Totally agree with the top 6, just not convinced that we trade one. The only two trade candidates would be Agholor and Meyers and not sure what we'd be able to get for them. If we trade one, we lose depth and with an injury or two, we're in trouble.

Bedard mentioned today that run and pass blocking has not been good during 11's but I haven't heard any names mentioned outside of the one on one drills. Anyone have some insight or stories to share on this?

No one else worried about Judon?

Nah. We're at the stage of camp where if they know what a guy has (for the most part), they're going to either give them regular rest days to see what the bubble guys have got, or if they even have a hangnail they're going to sit them. They don't need Judon to get 100 reps this week, they need Judon to play 60 snaps per game in the regular season.

Sounds like 2 of the presumptive OL reserves to make the team, based on camp reports, would be Hambright (G) and Herron (T). Before camp, I really had no idea who beyond the starting 5 would separate themselves, so it's good to see a bit of clarity there.
Herron was/is our best reserve OLman

I think you underestimate how hard it is to find someone with even that level of competence. Personally, I could see Meyers tumbling down to WR4 and getting traded, but people here act like he's a JAG. JAGs don't produce WR2 (3 if you're being uncharitable) numbers consistently like Meyers has.

In fact, I would apply the JAG label to some of the guys who are expected by some to take Meyers' job. Wilkerson? Nixon? They're also 7th round picks/UDFA like Meyers, except the difference is they've shown nothing in real games whereas Meyers has shown quite a bit.

Meyers disrespect is one of the weirder things on this forum. He was covered by the likes of AJ Terrell, Stephon Gilmore & Xavien Howard on 3rd down. Teams knew he was their main threat to move the chains & by all accounts he’s leading camp again in receptions.

He’s a good WR who would be more efficient with threats on the outside to get defenses out of cover 1. I’d be surprised if they moved him.

Heard they were trying to run a Shanahan style run scheme but are stopping that?u

I'm one of the folks unimpressed by Meyers.

Sure he had respectable conventional stats, but by FO's system he was 70th in DYAR (total productivity) and 72nd in DVOA (efficiency per play) last year when Mac was throwing to him. He gets yards and first downs that don't help the offense much. And he gets erased in the red zone. Looks to me like teams are saying Meyers isn't going to beat us and prioritize covering everyone else...

...like Kendrick Bourne, who was 14th in DYAR and 1st in DVOA last year. Bourne made big plays when given the opportunity. Meyers didn't.

Or Hunter Henry, who was 5th in DYAR and 2nd in DVOA amongst TE's.

Or even Brandon Bolden, who was 4th in DYAR and 2nd in DVOA amongst RB's catching passes.

Even Agholor was much more effective than Meyers.

Meyers got lots of targets last year for very little production and took opportunities from receivers who were far more effective.

That said, as the 70th most efficient WR last year, you can argue he's above average as a 3rd WR option. There are lots of mediocre WR's playing in the NFL. But he's well below replacement value at -10% DVOA, which indicates to me that he can and should be replaced, and certainly shouldn't be the #1 target in the offense.

I might add that if you want Mac to be able to carry the team, he needs to get the ball to playmakers. Meyers is not a playmaker.

I've posted this before on another thread, but here it is again:

I'm sorry he had only 2 TD's in those 3 years, which I believe is a record for inefficiency. Lots of empty yards and garbage time first downs.

Brisby had 10 TD's in his first 3 years.

Hernandez had 18 TD's

Gronkowski had 38 TD's

Gronkowski had more impactful games than Meyers' whole career.

- This is what I'd like to see if there are no trades...
X = Meyers, Thornton
Y = Bourne, Meyers
Z = Parker, Agholor

- If Meyers is traded...
X = Agholor, Thornton
Y = Bourne, Nixon
Z = Parker, Thornton

- If Agholor is traded...
X = Meyers, Thornton
Y = Bourne, Nixon
Z = Parker, Meyers
