Tyquan Thornton already turning heads in the film room

Let's just hope for good health for once with these kind of picks injured Rookies and the Patriots are not a good combination.

One good thing that Thornton have going for him is that Parker - Bourne and Agholor should take a lot of pressure off him early on. I don't mind him learning the ropes behind those three no pressure. Would love to see Thornton and that Nixon kid strut their stuff.

That Baylor QB took away 2 tds being inaccurate just in those handful of plays...4.2 had me optimistic. Hopefully the release is as advertised. He got more seperation off his release in the first play than Harry ever managed. Hopefully he stays healthy

What about his legs look at all "slight?" His legs look pretty built for someone running 4.2 - or am I expecting too little for an NFL WR? Legs remind me of Tyreke Hill...seems to be a similar type of athlete. I am not suggesting he'll have a Hill sort of impact, but that is absolutely the kind of ceiling he brings. Whether he puts it all together and stays healthy remains to be seen.

Love this pick with the burner RB. Speed kills. Love the new direction of the offense. Athletes at skill positions, like many have been bemoaning the lack of for years.

I'm telling ya, Tf'nB is pouting about all the toys Bill bought Mac after his rookie season. He got Randy for a bit and not much else (as far as true elite NFL athleticism - that was never the hallmark of Brown/Welker/Edelman etc. Hell even gronk, while an athletic freak, was only gawked over due to the athleticism for his size/position). Thornton looks like elite athletic ability for any NFL position, nevermind 'just' WR.

That's a great analysis just imagine what a player like that does for an Offense drawing so much attention. Imagine how much things he opens up underneath kind of like T Hill when he was in KC.

Hmmmm I'm getting that T Hill ceiling feeling too :) Thornton seems pretty well put together already.

Only in your mind. If you get your head in the game, you can change that.
In Patriors history.

Harry was the worst WR pick when the Pats desperately needed help at WR. Like now. Many are praying that Thornton does not follow the same path. Many are skeptical of Thorton after the Harry debacle.

Read the thread. Read, listen and learn.

Tyreek Hill ceiling, Bethel Johnson (as a receiver, not a returner) floor. More than likely somewhere in the middle of course.

Good job Evan! Thx for the video, love Data and analysis.
Happy GIF

Healthy prime Gronk was the greatest offensive weapon in the history of the game.
Agreed. However, he wasn't running away from CB's (ok maybe the Jordan Richards of the world ) - he destroyed them with his size. Anyone big enough to handle his length in the passing game couldn't keep up. It's a completely different type of "athletic nightmare" that had as much to do with his size and brawn as it did his speed/quickness/agility. Thornton seems to dable solely in latter group - which is what most of the posters on this board were clammoring for outside of the Randy years.

Thornton has as good a chance as any (based on measurements and one fleeting film breakdown on youtube ) to bust that WR1 drought.

**Just as there are only so many 300+ athletes in the world (BB's rather famous reasoning for dropping rd1 picks on OL + front 7), there are only so many people that can move like Thornton, no matter their size. That packed into a 6' 2", long armed frame (appearance judgement here, maybe a draftnik could weigh in and let us all know if that's the reefer talking)? If you see one of these athletes you like and have the chance to take them, you have to do it, imo. Speed kills. OG is our most athletically demanding position on the line - RD1. Freak athlete RD2. Groh (or whoever got brought in to help BB this iteration) seems to agree.

Hmmm.

When you account for his run/pass blocking as well no question he is in the discussion.

I think it's worth introducing Moss, Rice and Jim Brown and Barry Sanders into the debate.

I don’t really see the Tyreek comparisons with Thornton, if any rookie looks like Tyreek it’s Marcus Jones… that kid can also fly.

With Thornton, I don’t think he has to be a volume reception guy to help this team win. He can be more of a deep threat who opens up all the underneath routes for the really agile weapons they have.

I think (best case) Thornton will be more like Desean Jackson in his prime or some combination of Jackson and DK Metcalf, a better David Patten.

He’ll get or skirt a little over 1000 yards, but he’ll average 18-20 yards per reception. He might only catch 2-3 catches per game, but still will effect the outcome with his speed and threat of his speed. He won’t have to catch 100 balls to be successful here.

OK, i've got a few thoughts on this topic.

1, The best thing about Lazar's film study, IMHO were the many examples that showed how well he caught the ball outside his frame. It made me feel much better about the pick. The fact that he seems to understand some of the finer points of route running also bodes well. Plus never underestimate the ability to track the ball and adjust to it. He seems to do that very well too, so it became clear he is a lot more than just 4.2 40 speed.

2. However I'm still having a problem getting passed the 7.25 3-cone time, which is btw, a full 2 tenths SLOWER than our freakin' QB. I am a BIG fan of short area quickness over long field speed. JE was a perfect example. A 6.6 3cone and 4.6 speed turned into a LOT of yards over the years. But like all things these abilities can be developed. His athleticism and explosiveness (vertical and broad jumps are both excellent),

3 Personally I don't see big things from him this coming season. Something in the 4-500 yd range, I'd consider excellent. I'd actually like to see him start his education from the slot. By learning the WR position inside out, it will give him a fuller view of how the offense is built, as well as force him to improve that short area quickness. Of course you can have him run go patterns and deep crossers depending on matchups and injuries My ideal would be having Bourne up his offensive snap count to the 60+ % level and have Thornton and Meyers split the rest as well as plays some outside snaps as well.

4. As for his strength, looks like he has more than we thought, though I like to see see him add 10lbs of muscle to that frame over the next few years. HOWEVER I can't tell you how upset I get watching football players maxing out on one lift heavy lifts. The only one who wins that contest is the orthopedist. Getting strong is rather simple. Fatigue the muscle to complete failure, rinse and repeat. Its not rocket science. For example, when lifting heavier weights you stop when the lactic acid builds up in the muscle and forces you to stop. When lifting heavier weights that's usually 3 or 4 reps after it first appears. To over simplify, using lighter weights in a more controlled manner, not just throwing it up using momentum, one will be able to do do 18-20 reps and lift 10 or so reps under duress and thus fatigue the muscle more fully and effectively building.

I've been using this system on and off for well over a decade, unfortunately off has been more than on the last few years. But this summer one of my Poker buddies has a son who is playing small college NE football (a 300lb OT no less) I have worked this system with him and a few of his teammates this summer and have seen a lot of gains, without the risks we see in the Thornton clip. Kind of a pet peeve of mine, though I think the NFL is really coming around on this. Sorry about the digression. Carry on.

For all the talk of Harry's lack of speed, the main reasons he didn't work out here was health and having NO grasp of what the offense was asking of him. If Thornton is going to buck the Patriots-drafted WR trend, he'll need to "get" the playbook. Long way to go, but this is a good first step. I'd rather be hearing things like this now (even if it's a fluff piece) than the opposite: "Rumor: Thornton struggling with playbook early".

I agree, it's better to hear good things than bad....but like yourself...I am holding my breath for now.

Perhaps, if you're not including QBs. Definitely not, if you are.
