So how do you grade this year’s draft?

Difficult to grade prior to playing an NFL game, every need was not addressed, however many were, gonna go with a ??B.

can't believe we did not pick this guy in the third

Seeing a lot of these clips of Strange - he looks like he could hit the weight room.

Here's what Peter King had to say in FMIA...

2. I don’t get New England. Picking Cole Strange, a decent prospect from Tennessee-Chattanooga, 29th overall was a naïve move by Bill Belichick. There was no indication he’d have gotten picked before New England’s next pick at 54; even if he was picked before then, so what? Look at the 76th pick in the draft, Travis Jones, handle Strange, the 29th pick, at the Senior Bowl:

i like the player and potential but he needs some strength imo which is not a bad thing, this can be trained and is probably necessary because in D2 he did not need the same strength imo. I just don't like the pick for other reasons. We will never know if he would lasted to 54. The rumours about strange getting first rd. grades etc. are there but would a team really picked him before 54, idk.

1- Trent Mcduffie CB
2- Cole Strange OG
3- Dean, Harris, Channing or Chenal LB because that's a MAJOR HOLE
4- Thornton or Calvin Austin III WR
5- Marcus Jones, Tariq Woolen or Zyon McCollum CB
6- Kevin Harris or other RB although you should have gotten that punter Azaiza. I'm gonna be laughing my ass off every time he punts vs you now. About 10 decent RB's didn't get drafted...Strong's film is weak. Harris better but still Azaiza...
7- Bo Melton or Dontario Drummond slot WR
UDFA- QB, RB, LB, WR, S

There, fixed it for you Bill, still trust you but what the heck are you guys down there.

I think it was a 4.5 40, but that should be good enough. Look at his coverage ststs for 2021. They are abysmal. No agility is my guess, only straight line speed.
When fielding 5 or 6 DBs your MLB should be headed into the the line of scrimmage or backfield; where Chenal cracked skulls.

I woudl have liked McDuffie over Strange as well

People who grade drafts the days after, nevermind the same year, are wasting their time.
We won't have a clue until final cuts in Sept., and we won't have an idea until after this season, and we won't know for sure until 3 years from now. Also, if Strange, Thornton, Jones 1, Strong, Stueber make the team and contribute it'll be a successful draft. Whether they turn into NFL stars or get big 2nd deals is a crapshoot. I think Strange will be the only immediate starter - and that's what you want from your 1st rounder. I could see the other 4 being starters next year, and potentially Harris & Roberts (who likely stay on PS this year) or UDFA's Ray & Mitchell

if it's true, it shows how different the league valued the players we picked

If You have to wonder if the first rd pick can even make team? Then it’s an awful pick.

This whole draft and especially this pick is indefensible.

Its obviously time to move on from BB.
i thought my eyes felt off after hearing the announcement of our pick.
I question the positional value compared to the round where he was drafted and also the ceiling.
We need playmakers, and had glaring holes at playmakers on the defense. Outside press man Corner, three down DE which are valuable positions and expensive to find contributors, which plays a role how i would put my board together imo. Especially when consesus good defensive players are available and you take the 3/4th rated IOL you must question this decision.
Then two running backs where i rather would have used one pick for a NT, a BU QB in the fourth while you have other more valuable needs or is a possible BU QB really more valuable than a possible NT starter? No it's not

I wonder if the rumor is true that BB thought he'd get Lloyd or Wyatt at 29?
If so, and either way, as usual BB out-thinks himself and tries to prove how smart he is by over-complicating something simple.
If they liked McDuffie, Elam, Lloyd, Johnson or Wyatt - which they should - any of those guys would be immediate helps, then they should have just grabbed them. BB said they might've picked Strange anyway at 21 - BIG LIE. That's ridiculous. He's covering because he blew it. Strange would have been there at 54, and Thornton at 85.
I'm trying to look at the positives of what we ended up with. But, it sure seems BB screwed up the top rounds projections.

Love Wade’s talent/2020 tape, but I was particularly focusing on the rooks. Hope he can stick around.
Yes, we are focusing on the rooks. However, when we focus on needs and how to replace the production of Jackson, some are considering all options that are available for 2022: Mitchell, Butler, Wade, and the three Jones boys.

I guess that we should have drafted Thornton (or another WR) at 29 and Strange at 54. That would have made the draft so, so much better.

Let's be clear. We needed to draft our starting LG and a top WR (especially with the likely loss of Agholor and/or Myers after the season). IMO, it was NOT unreasonable to use our first two picks for those positions, especially after picking up the additional picks by trading down.

Strange was the #3 LG in the draft. It is certainly possible that another LG needy team might have reached for Strange before 54. I suspect that Belichick had Strange rated far, far higher than any other guard available. Securing a starting LG for the next 5 years is a very big deal. [The fact that mediots were sure that Belichick could have gotten Strange at 54 is totally irrelevant].

AS AN ASIDE
I was actually afraid that Belichick would add another LB to the 7 player competition rather than making sure he got his LG and a WR. IMO, we didn't need another youngster at LB; perhaps we need a vet.

In Curran's latest article he listed a stat that kinda shocked me. 57% (16 out of 28) of the players drafted since 2019 have played in less then half of the Patriots games. We need to hit higher than this. I understand when the 6th or 7th rounders don't see playing time but there's to many 3rd rounders on this list.

  • Anfernee Jennings (3, 20): 42 percent of games, 33 percent of snaps
  • Byron Cowart (5, 19): 38 percent of games, 31 percent of snaps
  • Devin Asiasi (3, 20): 30 percent of games, 28 percent of snaps
  • Dalton Keene (3, 20): 18 percent of games, 40 percent of snaps in those games
  • Hjalte Froholdt (4, 19): 16 percent of games, 11 percent of snaps
  • Yodny Cajuste (3, 19): 14 percent of games, 17 percent of snaps
  • Jarrett Stidham (4, 19): 14 percent of games, 11 percent of snaps
  • Ronnie Perkins (3, 21): 0
  • Cam McGrone (5, 21): 0
  • Joshuah Bledsoe (6, 21): 0
  • Will Sherman (6, 21): 0
  • Tre Nixon (7, 21): 0
  • Justin Rohrwasser (5, 20): 0
  • Dustin Woodard (7, 20): 0
  • Ken Webster (7, 19): 0

How’s that compare to league average over the same time period?

How about relative to average draft position?

A good question and one I'm not sure of. My concern is that over a 3 year period we have 5 3rd rounders who have done next to nothing. We can't miss that many in a round that should produce players that contribute.

This was a boom or bust draft. Really there were no safe picks. In 5 years, Bill is going to get an A or an F.
Pierre Strong and Stuber were the only safe picks
