Official 2022 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

Russell and Chamberlain are the two greatest players in NBA history. Babe Ruth is the greatest player in MLB history. Gordie Howe is one of the 3 greatest players in NHL history. Jim Brown is the greatest RB in NFL history.

The whole "time before" argument, when based on things other than insufficient data, is just a form of recency bias.
I have a vivid memory of Gordie Howe that's fantastic. It involves a Bruins player named Don Awrey.

Awrey is trying to keep Howe from getting position in the slot and starts to hold Howe from behind. As the ref raised his arm to call the penalty on Awrey, Howe gives Awrey a quick, brutal elbow to the chin, sending him flying to the ice like a boxer who had been given an uppercut in a fight.

As Awrey is going down the ref stays with him, pointing with his left hand and raising his right, as Awrey slowly crumbled to the ground. The ref was like a cameraman following the action. It was pretty funny looking.

Someone had to let Awrey know when he woke up that he was going to the penalty box. :)

Even if he's joking Gronk is saying what I think a lot of players think. This could be the Patriots reputation under BB. Not exactly ideal for bringing top free agents here.

That's exactly what Arians did to Antonio Brown...

Obviously I don't know what BB is thinking but IMO he's not doing anything to prevent bonuses but he probably isn't going to throw balls in the end of wins to get people bonuses either. I'm sure players appreciate coaches allowing such things if the games allow it. Most bonuses are nothing in the grand scheme of next year's cap.

I'm not making an argument that they aren't or couldn't be, but when the game is so vastly different it leaves room for debate.

Otto Graham never gets mentioned in GOAT conversations but his winning record is better than Joe Montana's.

The time of Russell and Wilt is vastly different from the 80s, the 80s are close to today's game then the 60s.

Baseball on the other hand is pretty much the same since 1900
It's difficult to say whether I have a bias or an advantage because I saw all the players except Graham. I just think Jonny U would have been great in any era of football.

I think that in todays game, or any era, both Russell and Wilt would have been great but in different ways.

If allowed to lower his shoulder like Shaq, nobody could have stopped Wilt if he was allowed to use his size the way he could. He'd be scary..
I think Bill would have still dominated on defense. Even at 6'9" he had a knack for looking like was out of the play, only to let his quickness and athleticism get in the way of the other offense. He had a knack for directing his blocked shots to other Celts and was as quick as a cat.

Balcoball's problem to me, compared to 1900, is how long the games take. The 1900 games may have taken less than half as long as today's. I actually stopped paying attention to pro baseball when they struck in the 90's though, so I'm no expert. I did hear that the Yankees blew a 3-0 lead in 2004 against Boston though. That's like one of those Brady records that we all know will live forever.

Lol anything having to do with AB shouldn't be used in an argument anymore

Gronk further endearing himself w/ Pats fans. Lol

I would say there's some truth to the joke.

But other than that, Gronk is really making the celebrity rounds and he has gotten much better. He is much more natural and fluid now, thus more funny and enjoyable to watch. It looks like he's well on his way to a fruitful career as an entertainer. But 1st, one more year. He can't let Kelce pass him in yards and let people call him the goat.

The 1st go round during his retirement, his jokes were forced and he was more hesitant.

Keanu Neal will actually count less against the Bucs' salary cap this year ($1.0475 million) than he will against the Cowboys ($2 million from void years on deal last year). Same is true for Bucs with Logan Ryan and Giants.

Since the draft is coming up. Looking back at the Bucs 2021 draft, it was a terrible draft for that season. And they may not be much better for 2022.

Round 1- Tryon was stuck behind an injured JPP for most of the season. Then when given more playing time, he hit a rookie wall and was outplayed by Nelson.

Round 2- Trask. High pick for someone who couldn't win the backup job. Gabbert being resigned means it was a wasted pick.

Round 3- Hainsey. Wasn't useful last year. Supposedly he was to replace Jensen but he was resigned. If he can't win a starting job, then another waisted pick.

Round 4- Darden. Was worse than the guy he replaced in Mickens. He should be cut. Miller can take his special team spot.

Later rounds - irrelevant.

Bucs had injury issues on offensive line, running back, WR, Edge, and CB. The rookies did not improve any of those positions.

Looking back at the draft after only 1 year, it wasn't a very impressive class.

When looking at redrafting it wasn't obvious to keep which players would have been better.

Normally I can find players rather easily that would have been a clear upgrade

I think that given they signed back all starting 22, they focused on depth & ST.

DE Tryon (ST/ back-up on 53)
QB Trask (rookie QB on 53)
OL Hainsey (depth on 53)
WR Darden (ST starter)
LB KJ Britt (ST starter)
CB Chris Wilcox (released)
LB Stuard (ST starter)

Tampa should have taken Elijah Moore...538 yards, 5 TDs, in only 11 games. They Jets scooped him up a few picks after Tryon...
