Player Signing Patriots use 2nd Round Tender on Jacobi Meyers

I believe as much as Belichick valued Jackson, he would have let him leave last year for a 2nd last year, rather than only getting a comp 3rd next year.
But no team came in with a 2nd round pick for him. So jackson isn't worth a 2nd round pick either? Despite being one of the best corners in the league?

Let me know when a team gives up a 2nd
To sign him.

I guarantee you, Belichick won’t match
The offer.

He would rather have the 2nd round pick
Just like he would for JC Jackson last year?

He wasn’t worth a second, when it came with a multi million dollar China contract.

Meyers will never get that type of money because 4.63 speed receivers who can’t find the end zone do not get those type of offers.

No one is giving up a 2nd for Meyers. Why even waste time discussing it (now I’m doing it). I would gladly take a 2nd if someone decides to give him $6/7M. Yes we need help at WR but Jacobi isn’t all that. He’s a decent player but not a must keep. BB would most likely not match an offer so there’s that to chew on.

Yes

He makes a tender in hopes

I believe Belichick would have taken the 2nd round pick if Jackson got the money he got.

If it was a short money deal “it wasn’t”, he would have kept Jackson

I also believe he would have taken a 2nd round pick over Meyers at short money.

No.

The 2nd rd tender has been around for 10 years. There hasn't been a single signing or match over that period.

There is a reason for that and it has nothing to do with a player's worth.

I am hoping for an upgrade
We need more than 2 touchdowns in 3 seasons from a starter.

Huh? The question was would you trade an UDFA for a 2nd rounder? I would. Absolutely. That's the meat of this draft. Hell we just traded a top 5 G for a 5th rounder.

You wouldn't?
???

You fail either at analysis or reading comprehension. I'm not sure which.

There is little reason to believe that a WR chosen by Belichick in the first would be better than Myers. I understand that many here believe that any WR THEY WOULD draft in the 2nd surely would be better than Myers.

You may be right, but given the opportunity I would not only accept that bet, I would ask you to double it.

There is a lot of WR talent in this draft.
Guys with a lot more talent and guys who
Run faster than 4.63 & guys who know where the end zone is located.

Now…. I am getting tired of talking about your binky.

Good night !

We could use our 1st & 2nd to grab a top 10 player (NT, Edge, CB) that slipped into low teens and still have a 2nd.

This hypothetical isn't happening anyway since no one is giving up a 2nd for Meyers.

You don't seem to understand the context of this at all. Putting a 2nd round tender on a player is BB telling the rest of the league to stay away, that we want to keep him. It also guarantees Meyers a $4m salary next year. It's a way to scare teams away, not invite a trade. You seem to think it's an announcement to come take this guy for a 2nd rounder, and it's the opposite. It's very rare a team will claim a guy with a 2nd round tender on him, but if it were to happen then in most cases the team will match the offer to keep the guy. We got Welker this way from Miami, and ended up giving the Phins a 2nd and 7th, and paid WW more than the tender amount, but that was a unique case.

It's very doubtful anyone will trade the 2nd rounder for Meyers, which was our intent all along.

As for your criticism of him, he's been very productive, gets open consistently, has excellent hands, and makes contested catches. I'd say his lack of TD's the past 2 years was more due to the QB in the red zone (Cam then Mac). He also was very unlucky on at least 3 plays I can think of that should have been td's.

I'm thankful you don't have any input into running the team.

His first season he only had 26 catches. His second he was playing with Cam Killing Worms Newton. How many TDs were there to catch from him again? This season he caught two from a guy who threw for 22. It wouldn't surprise me if he doubled that this season. Fortunately, it's not in your power to send him away in favor of Chad Jackson.

I'm thankful you don't have any input into running the team.

I say the same about you.
Although I am a sucker for a yellow lab.

Your better at picking dogs than players….

If you go back to the beginning, you will see that all I said is that I wish someone would sign Meyers so we can get a 2nd round pick.

I agree nobody signs RFA’s these days.

No law against wishing & I was not alone.

The other thing I would like to say.
I believe the Patriots would take the 2nd round pick even if Meyers contract was the league minimum.

Last year JC Jackson also got a 2nd round tender & didn’t get an offer. I believe if the contract was team friendly bargain, they would match the offer.

That’s how I justified saying Meyers is not worth a 2nd round pick.

We don’t have to agree, it is not a rule….

We both want the Pats to win.

I do understand where you are coming from but i think swapping a 900 yd receiver for a coin toss in rd two is a risk. Yeah we might get a better player but there is also a reasonable chance we could get worse. You refer to his speed and td return but he is actually a decent route runner who knows how to get open, has great hands and is pretty good at contested catches. He has been pretty unlucky regarding tds as we only threw for 8 last year then a rookie qb and i expect that to increase this year. Its pretty much a philosophical difference. Do you want a decent ish receiver or whats in the box which could either be better or potentially worse.

Ok fair enough. And we agree that NE would take the 2nd in all likelihood. It would be an opportunity to get an equivalent guy who's 4 years younger and save $3m+ on the cap.

As others have said, Meyers is similar to Jabbar Gaffney who was a valuable contributor. Doesn't have top end speed or high YAC, but is smart, tough, and moves the chains. He'll be on this team for the next 8 years.
