Player Signing Patriots use 2nd Round Tender on Jacobi Meyers

It's counterintuitive, but Meyers might be more likely to get signed away with this tender than Jackson was a year ago because his contract demands are probably significantly lower.

I still doubt anyone wants to give us a 2 for Meyers.
The bigger issue is that the Pats had the space to match most offers last year. Right now they don't.

This obviously means they want Meyers back. Hope that's not an indication they plan on just rolling with same receiver group.

Well if that's the plan we certainly will be in the Top 10 of the 2023 Draft.

Like we were this year, right? I mean Jones will have to be WORSE, right?

1) no one is going to give Myers a contract we can't match AND a 2nd.

2) the pats can match any contract.

Honestly, if someone wants Meyers and is willing to give up a 2nd for an UDFA, let them have him. We could certainly use another 2nd on this player rich draft.

Never said that but Mac is going need very good players around him to succeed. He won't be like Brady well nobody is who does more with less. Yeah we made the playoffs but is still not one of the better Teams in the AFC. I mean off my head KC - Tennessee - Buffalo - Cincinnati and Baltimore. You have to think that Teams like San Diego - Denver and the Colts could be players this year and I know we beat San Diego last year big deal. In the end one fact remain we were old and slow in many areas. The question is now can we compete with the Iron of the AFC going forward?

21 should be for sale which also fetches that 2nd Rounder. Let me make this clear I like Meyers as a #3 or 4 WR just not as a one or two like the Patriots are using him. You can't fit square pegs in round holes.

I'm OK keeping him but a #2 is way too much to turn down.

Yeah, you said exactly that: "top-10 pick."

They were a playoff team last year, and with expected improvements in Mac alone, they should be again this year. That's not a top-10 pick, is it?

Top 10 pick if they roll with the same cast of WR's featuring Agholor. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that Agholor sucks and is overpaid period! I don't drink the BB Kool aid I never liked Agholor he looked good against us in the SB because he had a Safety Chung on him all night. He's a mediocre Receiver.

This was so expected, that Miguel has factored into his cap space calculations from the moment the season ended. This doesn't really change the offseason outlook at all. I think it's fine value for him too. $4m for a guy who had 900 yards is not too much.

In absolute terms, yes, they can match any contract they want. The question is whether matching it makes sense for the Patriots. I think anything with a cap hit higher than $5M and the Pats would say "so long and thanks for the pick." [By the way, OTC says that his production last year is worth ~$10M.]

Why trade Meyers?

Move Agholor
Sign FA WR1, or trade for WR1
Draft Williams in round 1
Sign a lower end FA WR or two
Bourne slides in as WR2 until beaten out
Meyers slides in as WR3 until beaten out
If you could get a 2nd for him, you wouldn't do it?

Offering the second round tender was a free throw. Easiest decision this off season.

So, exactly like I said - they rolled with the guys you named last year, so where's the huge drop-off? Jones with a 2nd year, same cast of pass-catchers with another year with Jones...why do they go down 11+ picks?
Same cast as last year, but they'll get a top-10 pick...because...AGHOLOR!!!!!!! Do you even pause and read what you post? The hyperbole is kind of, you know, silly.

And, new's flash, Agholor isn't paid like a #1WR, and after this free agency, he won't even be paid like a good #2WR.

You figure the Patriots need that 2nd so that they can draft another JoJuan Williams?

I'd rather they keep the WR that seems to work well with their second year QB.

Early in the season, jones enjoyed some success dumping passes off to white. Then white got hurt.

We draft a duo threat (run/pass) like Robinson of Kentucky and suddenly jones has a tremendous playmaker, who does incredible things with the ball in his hands!

No brainer. Dude was Mac's training wheels, basically. His catch rate was lower this year, but his "True Catch Rate" (per playerprofiler - removing uncatchable balls) remained the same from last year (90.8 to 89.2%).

That being said, he's got terrible top end speed (hasn't broken 19mph as a ball carrier so far), but Edelman didn't really have it either (never broke 20mph as a ball carrier since they started gathering the data in mid 2010s - he def did as a punt returner for sure early in his career). He's got it upstairs, though, which is why one of the "****roaches" (other being Gunner) is still around. Curious to see how year 2 with Mac (and year 4 overall) goes. After Edelman's 4th year, people here were thinking he might be a serviceable WR3 but more than likely no more than a WR4.

This is reasonable. People crying about 4M$ for Jakobi production are the types who think future HoFers should be manning every position…
