NFL Free Agency 2022 edition

Out of interest, is Watson really all that good? Some folks talk about him as if he's already bookmarked for Canton. Based on what?

A better and a more flexible cap situation down the road...
How? Let’s say it’s a WR that we pay 4 years 60 mill

If we do a restructure to move the first year cost out of someone contract this year and into the future, sign him now and have him from 22-25 we are better in 22 and 23 as well because he has been here a year.
All we did for the cap was move maybe 8 mill out of this year and into the future, essentially borrowing it forward.
Where is the negative?

How does playing a bad game carry over to free agency?
By your argument a poor finish to season means doom no matter what.
If we were breaking the bank the complaints would be that it’s all the wrong players.
And we got back bad returns on two last year ie... Agholor and more so Smith. Was it because we handcuffed Mac early on?? Did McDaniels hold those guys back with his Play-calling and Mac being a Rookie? It remains to be seen but I don't think they got Agholor here at that price to be a 476yds guy when based on career average he's like a 700yds guy at the very least.

He has killed us the past two matchups.

He's a second tier QB with room to improve both his game and his standing.

(First tier = Brady/Mahomes/Rodgers, maybe Allen)

Well, it matches a certain quarterback who was strip sacked in the super bowl with the game on the line with a horrible decision at the age of 40
You're being disingenuous. Those plays aren't even remotely comparable. Favre literally had a chance on that play to put Minnesota in game-winning FG range by two different ways but instead he choose a low percentage, high risk pass across his body into traffic. Brady was a fraction late finding a receiver in the flat and he got strip-sacked as the o-line broke down. He also had a phenomenal game otherwise. This game was lost by the Patriots for another very obvious reason.

Facts. Keene always played with great violence and agression in college. I always thought he could be a modern Larry Centers type player.
Larry Centers had 100 receptions in a season. He was a premier pass catcher. I don't think he's a realistic comp for Keene.

Not mocking the Pats. My thought is that they wanted to put Onwenu into the lineup somewhere and maybe they think Onwenu isn't a RT nor a LG, but a RG. So, shipping off Mason clears some money and we get a five out of it.

At some point, our in-house guys need to take a leap forward. We can't soley acquire talent in free agency...it is not sustainable. We need to hit home runs here and there....
Firstly you have to have "in-house" guys to step up. Meaning the drafts have to get a lot better. And clearing space for Onwenu by trading your best offensive lineman is nonsensical. The o-line is worse now without Mason. I don't care about the 5th round pick, look at the track record in the 5th round, it's not good.

Thank you Josh for signing Brandon Bolden. I really hated seeing this guy on the field for many years, but I couldn't find a reason to complain about him last season. However, I'm glad to see him go so more touches go to Rham as he is the most dynamic back on the team. He should beat out Harris as the lead back this year. I'm not a fan of the musical chairs at RB.

I'm on the fence with Johnson. While he's not a mauler, he improved since 2019. Any running game is better with a quality FB.
Bolden was fine last season. However, if White is healthy then we don't really need him. I have no problem with changes at the FB spot... it's not a premium position.

He has killed us the past two matchups.
Many a JAG QB has had a career day against the Pats. Hasn't always been a great indicator of future success.

Im curious. Why would it be better to wait until next year to add a talented player than to do it this year? What do you gain?
Any new marquee signing will eat a bit from future cap space . And if it doesn't pan out, we eat the money for 2 seasons. Besides we take away opportunity for our own middling players to gain experience and become better.

So just doing trade off analysis and looking at the probability of the FA to pan out in the first year it's, it seems counter intuitive to sign big players till we have drafted and developed our own core.

Saints with a $110M turn around on their cap situation. That's 53% of the entire cap w/o releasing any players. Incredible.

So you expect that every free agent works out perfectly?

Of course receivers production was hampered by a rookie qb being held back early in the season. But we ended up #6 in scoring, # 2 in % of drives scored on. The complete utter overhaul of the offense was a rousing success.
New, rookie QB
2 new TEs
2 of top 3 WRs new
2 OL brought in new
New rb2

It is ridiculous to think anything better than that could be expected.
Overall the return was excellent. Nitpicking over individual players is meaningless if Agholor caught 100 passes abs Meyer caught 10 would that really make a difference? Other than what gets cried about?

The "borrowing it out" part...

Some guys could regress, get hurt, and etc...

And I also think a lot rides on the QB musical chairs between Watson, Matty Ice, Mayfield, and JG.... their destinations will shuffle up the WR market as well...as well as other positions.

Yeah, we can spend money...but better to look for bargains now...and hold that money in reserve to spend again like last year when we were the only ones with a bankroll.

Buffalo hit a home run with Von Miller. He's been mostly durable throughout his career and consistently productive. He still can be a premier pass rusher for the next 2-3 seasons... it's unlikely he'll see the tail end of that contract but he and Buffalo probably understand that. He's going to make a top-ranked defense even better, which is very bad news for the Patriots.

O.J. Howard is a player I was hoping the Patriots would take a look at... he's an Alabama guy with probably a lot of untapped potential. He was off to a good start with Brady in 2020 but then he had the season-ending injury. Last season Tampa Bay just never got him into the mix. The Patriots didn't really need a gigantic pass catcher added to an offense that they've given up 9 consecutive TD drives.

Buffalo is looking like the best team in the AFC East by a lot.

He's never won the division w/o an elite QB is the point regardless of all the excuses.
He won the division in 2001. Was Brady’s play in the regular season really elite that year?
