NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 15 Other NFL Games Thread

The more I watch Herbert play the more impressed I am. Within a couple of years he's going to be the best qb in the league. Some of the throws he makes - not freelancing but within the flow of the offense - leave me shaking my head. Right now only A-A-Ron can make those throws. Mahomes can't

He has all the tools in the world to be an all-world QB. However, by watching just last night, it seems like Herbert doesn't go through his progressions very well. At times he makes up his mind where to throw the ball to before the snap and then doesn't notice there is a defender in the way that may intercept the ball or knock it down. If he improves on that the sky is the limit for him.

Chiefs don't scare me.

They are a good matchup for us. Bb knows how to defend that offense, and we should be able to run on that defense quite effectively. Play action and kill them with iur te/rb in the pass game as well. From a matchup standpoint they shouldn’t scare anyone.

HOWEVER, that team unfortunately has an aura about them now, i cant deny it. They hang around in games they have no business winning and know how to pull them out. We outplayed them a great majority of both games in 2018 but they somehow found a way back in those and would have beaten us if not for late heroics from brady. they erased 3 double digit deficits in the 2019 playoffs. They had NO business winning last nights game but took full advantage of all the chargers idiot mistakes. Many other examples there.

If we meet them we gotta play smart football for 60 minutes or theyll make it count. As great as brady was , in those games he did have multiple turnovers that kept them alive and that was almost enough for them to squeak it out. . He did make up for it later but i dont wanna take that chance this year!

I am not sure. He has the God given talents, but I don't know if he has the mental side of it down. That is why I think the Pats got the better of him both times they played him along with other teams that have smart defenses going against him.

He makes some incredible plays that spins your head, but he also makes some plays that leave you shaking your head.

If you put Mac Jones' brain in his body, he could rival Brady for the greatest of all time. I think though with his brain, he will fall far short of that.

The Bengals are going to get wrecked. The Steelers may have a shot if TJ Watt plays

It depends which Bengals shows up. They are a real Jeckyl and Hyde team. But when the Bengals are on, they are capable of hanging with anyone.

Staley's mistakes weren't just on offense. In fact, I would argue that the mistakes he made on defense were actually worse- trying to play Chiefs with a standard cover 2, very few nickel and no dime. And, worse of all, continually leaving Hill in single coverage. They didn't bother putting a shell on him or bracketing him. That was frustrating to watch.

I feel like both bb and vrabel know how to slow that offense down. Both teams can run the ball too . Its hard for me to see kc getting past both teams, maybe one just based off their ability to win

Chargers got almost 200 yards rushing and 4.9 YPC on the Chiefs. I know Jones was out but I really doubt he is the difference between a good run defense and a lousy one. We can run it all day on anyone - we already saw it happen.

Can't wait for that Pats Chiefs playoff game. Hope it happens.

They make a big deal about how much the Chiefs' defense has turned around, but people forget that part of the turn around was because they faced the Packers with Jordan Love as the QB, the Cowboys without their top two receivers for most of the game and the Cowboys only rushing 16 times (although they got 82 yards on those 16 carries), the Raiders only rushed 26 times in two games, and the Broncos did rush for 154 yards and 5.0 YPC but they have Teddy Bridgewater as QB.

Even during their defensive turnaround with Jones in the line up, they have shown they can be run on. That is good news for the Pats and their two headed rushing monster.

They ran the ball for 200 yards but when they got into the red zone they tried to throw 4 straight times lol

Herbert is no dummy. He‘s one of the most academically gifted players to ever play in the NFL. Its unfair to judge his in-game processing based on comparisons to 5+ year veterans.

Good grades and under fire decision making are not the same thing.

Yup. Deserved what they got in the end.

But AnALyTiKz or something....

There is a difference between being smart and being able to process information and diagnose plays quickly. Not saying he is dumb, but intelligence is not everything for a QB when it comes to the mental part of the game.

Just because you are an academic genius, doesn't mean you are among the fastest at processing plays in the NFL. The difference between a Tom Brady and an average QB in processing and diagnosing plays is less than a second in time. It is probably a fraction of a second.

Brady probably has the greatest football intelligence ever for a QB. But I doubt he is nearly as high in his academic intelligence.

right! Something tells me we wouldn’t see vrabes or bb doing that

Rut roh....

Understood. Still, no QB (including Brady) comes into the league as a supercomputer. It takes years to master in game decision making. We won’t know Herbert’s ceiling there until at least a couple more years. He‘s certainly a smart kid, so that gives him an edge imo.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with either @MAC10 or you. Justin Herbert, despite all his god given talents, is not there yet. He makes some head scratching decisions and so far Bill has been able to confuse him. But you have to remember that Mac played on "the 33rd NFL team" at Alabama while Herbie ran a high school offense at Oregon. Despite that, Herbie has thrown for 63 tds and 22 interceptions in less than 2 years, without the benefit of great coaching. I still feel like he'll be the best QB in the NFL in a couple of years.

But processing and reaction skills are the same thing as arm strength. You can improve what you have, but you if it isn't one of your strengths, you are likely not going to develop these skills to elite levels. You are still limited to what you were born with.

Doubt they'll need him on Sunday but this is a very big deal if he still can't go in week 16.

Herbert is more than 2/3 of the way through his second NFL season. Jones only started at Alabama for a little over a year... In college years which are far shorter. Herbert is still not close to Jones in the mental aspect of the game yet.

I am not saying Herbert is a bad QB. He is a good QB. Could be great or even elite. He has had a great start to his career. But I also see that good, smart defenses still give him fits.
