Bedard: Mac running out of gas?

Get through Sunday and next Thursday at worst 1-1, and then he has a mini-bye and a bye in the next month. This is the one-time where a late-season bye, instead of mid-season, might actually be more beneficial. Use the downtime to re-charge a little and then push on to the playoffs.

Yes, the playoffs.

Well, I have the solution for this....more Bolden!

Less about being tired
More about getting pancaked early and often in recent games
He was money vs LAC until he was disemboweled
Exactly. He accuracy dropped off after being crushed. He is trying to play through some sort of injury (ribs? chest? shoulder?). All NFL players (except kickers) are nursing injuries at this time of year; it is one of the dirty little secrets of the NFL. If any of us had been hit like Mac has been, we would be barely able to type, nevermind throw a football.

The Patriots have the steal of the draft, one of the best QBs in the league, but shame on them for not giving him WRs that can get consistenly open or protecting him.

BTW, Bedard did have a hot take in early October that he thought that Jones may be having trouble seeing over the line of scrimmage and that is why he wasn't throwing down field. So Bedard is not always infallible with his analysis.

I subscribe and remember this as an off handed thought rather than a hot take, which is all the "take" about being worn down is.

In one of the question and answer sessions during preseason when Mac was having passes batted down I asked Bedard if he thought height would be a problem and he said no.

Bedard has had many bad and great takes over the years, but this year to be fair he has been one of the most right and has had great observations about the team.

It's easy to be critical. Now Ben Volin. There's a clown.

Beckham would be great but reading Queefs are emerging as the favorites make sense since he loves nasty stuff.

True, but Bedard is right a lot. He is also a pretty big Mac Jones supporter. None of his observations is based on antipathy for Mac Jones’ ability, intelligence or toughness. He loved the pick and loves the season he’s having.

The late bye really hurts Mac. Going that long without a break is tough for the whole team. This is a pretty decent article by Bedard who can be over dramatic at times or fish for stories that aren't there.

I don't think it's ground breaking to report or speculate that a rookie is starting to get fatigued given the explanted workload in the NFL vs College. I think there might be some truth

The rookie wall is real...what I want to see is how the Patriots deal with it now that there's a legitimate path to the playoffs. I want to see how Mac responds.

Activating Stidham is part of the plan it seems. Having 3 QBs provides some protection and depth.

I am not trashing Bedard. Overall, I think he is one of the better analysts among the local sports writers. I am just pointing out he has had opinions about Jones' play in the past that were not reality.

I don't think number of drop backs is a great metric for thinking that QBs are hitting the wall. Who knows how many drop backs the guy had in practice? In game drop back are not magically 10x more tiring then practice ones.. It's not like he is doing squats with 3x his body weight.. It's a drop back.

Human recovery doesn't work that way.. I'd be more concerned about the number of hits he has taken..

He'll hit the rookie wall.. that's pretty self-evident. They all do so the question is how fast they can bounce back.
Yup. The rookie wall is a real thing. They all hit it because the body isn’t used to that much football. The high school and college seasons are dramatically shorter with more time off between games (byes, conference championships, bowl games). I think the late bye might end up being a good thing for him and the other rookies. What was originally looked at as a curse will likely end up being a blessing in disguise.

Rookies go from the college season (extended in Mac’s case) to the combine and prodays to mimicamp, OTAs, the rookie football development program and into TC and then the season. It’s a long haul.

I don't want to be viewed as his defender, but in fairness Bedard has been #1 on the Jones train since day one.

Curran was the first to say he thought BB was choosing Mac, but Bedard was pounding the "Mac should be named starter" drum before anyone local on the beat.

Probably a little bit of a lot of things: Some rookie wall for sure, some normal ebb and flow of a season, playing high quality pass rushes that speed up his internal clock, and DC's having half a season of film now to really break down the cracks in his game. Not much you can do before the bye week about the wall, but how he adjusts to everything else will be key.

You nailed it. A lot of times QB's who never played or rookies, come out like a house on fire and then all of the sudden, they fall back. I am sure Mike White will do this, and also a few others. Semien. etc. Teams just do not have film, they are not risking anything yet, so you go from turnover machines to guys taking short stuff and not wanting to make mistakes. Everything is about how they respond when teams adjust to them, the playbook opens up and things like that. This is what seperates the QBs that go on to be good in the league and the ones that you never hear from again.

Bedard is a mixed bag, IMO. On one hand, he's forthright....moreso than other reporters...guess it is because he doesn't work for anybody, but his own platform. On the other hand, he has some pretty lazy takes....not as bad as Zolak's rap music take...but a bit lazy at times. His Barmore take was pretty bad in the spring/summer only to change his tune recently....

As to the schedule, it may help Mac somewhat:

Week 10: Physical game @ home vs. the Browns
Week 11: Short week @ Atlanta THEN 10 days off.
Week 12: Home vs. the Titans
Week 13: MNF @ Bills 7 days later
Week 14: BYE
Week 15: Possible flexed game @Indy which will be indoors.
Week 16: Home vs. the Bills
Week 17: Home vs. the Jaguars
Week 18: @Miami in warm weather.

We have played football for 9 weeks in a row...coming off a 3 game pre-season and a mini-bye before week 1.

I think that if we make the playoffs...that week 14 BYE will come in handy. Most of the league have had their BYE's the last 2-3 weeks.
