Mac Jones appreciation thread

Brady is 44 and playing like a MVP....he must be doing something right for him. Oh and Brady is a football player and does not owe you an explaination of **** in his life.
Umm....almost all of the bucs defense is drafted players. Both their top receivers are drafted, their line is all drafted. Your supposed Pats team just spent 160 mil dollars in FA, more than any team in the league while the bucs kept the players they had. Or in other words, what in the actual **** are you talking about?
The pats just went out and spent 160 mil dollars in free agency...Brady went to a team that had not won a playoff game in 18 years. They literally kept all their players from last year....So you are not being consistent, you are being a hypocrite. 4 pass catchers were brought into the pats this year at over 80 mil dollars....The thing is, your scale does not really mean **** in the realm of sports. lol
It always amazes me how pats fans dislike players that leave here more than any fan base I have ever seen. Its quite remarkable. Its also amazing how much even players today that play for the pats still love brady to death. I saw that after the game. I saw Belichick do something he never did before. I saw all the coaches come to him...So when you say unlikeable, maybe that is crybaby pats fanitis and not actual reality, because most everyone who knows Brady loves him to death. I am sure one day Mac will leave and you can just hate him at that point.

That’s not a lot of free agents overall. They’re paying roughly $17M for Gronk, Brown, Fournette, and Sherman combined. That’s nothing. Barrett was a good signing on a cheap deal after his rookie contract when he was a nobody. They got both Suh and JPP when their markets were relatively low.

The Yankees shelled out $200M contracts all the time and went after every player at his market peak.

I’m not seeing the connection at all. They built a heck of a team over many years of great drafting and then added on the final pieces via free agency.

The perception is they’re FA heavy because the late career hall of famers are imports. In reality, besides Brady, this was very much a homegrown team, and they haven’t given superstar contracts to lure players in.

I'm not saying they paid a lot to get them. I'm just saying they basically went the free agent route to win a championship. You can't deny that those players they acquired via FA and trade (Gronk) weren't essential to their SB. Without them, they'd be 3-4 win team. In my opinion, it's a cheap way to win a super bowl. I prefer the way the Cowboys did it in the 90s and the Pats of the 200s. Of course, we (and the cowboys) signed a few important pieces here and there but the core of the team was drafted and developed.

Essential? Not really. You cant deny that those players are there becuase of Brady. Gronk would not have went to tampa without Brady, neither would Brown. Teams get players every year, how is that a cheap way to win? All teams have the same cap. The patriots went out and spent 160 mil dollars this year, if they win the superbowl will you say the same thing? The pats and cowboys went and got players almost every year just like all teams. All teams play under the same cap. This is a silly statement from you. Tampa has drafted amazing especially on defense, and obviously they actually know how to draft wide receivers as well. They do not have to go dip into the market every year for receivers. Pats do though.

Who said I was not a patriots fan? I was calling you out for being a hypocrite. lol.
We all kinda get you aren’t a patriots fan. Kind of hard to hide that with your volume of posts ripping the team and praising Tampa. There is another forum you can head to, on this site, where you can hang out and tell everyone how wonderful Tom is. However this is a Mac Jones appreciation thread not a Tompa Bay appreciation thread, so kindly head on over to that other area where you can discuss your team with other like minded individuals.

The league is obsessed with arm and leg talent. While neglecting moving in the pocket and brains. Those latter two are what is most important.

Reminds me of the nba 15-20 years ago over-hyping guys who could dunk and jump, as opposed to, play basketball.

Amen to this!

I'm hoping Mac becomes the next Drew Brees...

That’s a really good comparison that I hadn’t thought of. Mac does play a lot like Brees, although he’s significantly taller. But his throwing style and pocket movement reminds me of Brees.

QBing is not about “arm talent“ or “leg talent“

The best thing about this is that this skill doesn't diminish with age.

Unlike the arms and legs of a mobile QB which is all the rage these days.

You absolutely need the arm talent - I think Mac has plenty. When guys start to put up numbers - suddenly complaints about his arm talent will disappear. Mac can run some as well.

The main reason Mac gets so much mockery from the media is his dad bod photo. But I am thankful for that photo - that probably not him out of the third pick.

Mac is on pace for 4320 yards passing for the season. That number would put him in the top 10 all time for the Pats for a single season.

Obviously with a big asterisk with the 17th game but still not bad at all.
After yesterday's 214 yard game now it's 4243 yards.

Football Outsiders faint praising Mac:

There is no question that Jones has been the best rookie quarterback this season. It's just not very exciting watching him play. His yardage, interception, and sack averages are right in the middle of the pack, while he's in the top 10 in completion percentage but the bottom 10 in yards per completion and touchdown rate. That leads to a lot of failed completions (57, tied with Jared Goff behind the 61 of Kirk Cousins) and field goal attempts (21 for New England, most in the league). It's an arch-conservative style that can get you into the playoffs, but not much more than that. That lack of big plays is the biggest thing Jones needs to work on as his career develops. If he can't make the occasional risk pay off once in a while, he may have already hit his ceiling.

What is it about Mac that provokes so much negativism about his prospects?

That last line is what does it for me: "If he can't make the occasional risk pay off once in a while, he may have already hit his ceiling."

1) He's a rookie. The whole concept of a "ceiling" is nebulous to begin with, but how many can you actually tell reach it their first year? Shouldn't a guy get one additional year to see if the needle moves before we say it's not moving?

2) The way that line is worded is basically saying, "If he doesn't get better, this is how good he will be." Real insightful stuff there FO.
