Game Day Thread Official Post-Game Thread: Week 1 - Pats lose to Dolphins 17-16

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

What game did you watch?

Jones was 29 out of the 39 and I can recall 3 of those 10 incompletions Pats receivers were wide open

...

Plus isn't the lolphins supposed to have some top secondary with Howard & Jones?

Like I said, Mac had to go through his progressions to find an open receiver and sometimes he could not find anyone and had to throw to a covered receiver or throw it away (I think he only did this a few times). Other times he had to scramble because the primary was covered. No, the Patriots receivers suck. On most teams they would be the second or third receiver. Compare them to, say, who Brady is throwing to now.

There are no WRs on the Patriots who scare a defense. This means that none of them will merit double coverage which means the defense can use man coverage. When the defense is in man, one or two safeties are free to blitz or do run stopping. It makes the OCs job much harder because the field is shrunk.

Or, maybe, I am totally wrong and Miami has exceptional defensive back. Not sure yet, but Mac did not have a lot of options. what a waste of his talent.

The receiving corps isn't going to scare anyone out of their socks but they are definitely formidable and put up a good showing, imo. Just need to focus the offense around the strength of the receivers (the TEs) more. They weren't involved nearly enough as they should be.

See…this is what frustrates me. No one seems to agree with me that these two TEs were terrible signings for $12.5M each. All offseason that’s been my biggest complaint about the team’s dealings.

Hunter Henry is a proven 600-750 yard guy, which breaks down to about 40 yards per game. He is a decent blocker but not a great one. Yesterday he had 30 yards, a couple of first downs, and was unspectacular but was solid. This is who he is. If he were some great, untapped talent then the Chargers would have thrown to him much more.

Jonnu Smith is a little different because there’s the sense the Titans buried him under some other solid options…but still, he’s never even had 450 yards in a season. He had 42 yards yesterday, which is actually a little above average for his career. It’s the same deal where I doubt the Titans saw an 800-yard guy and just decided to underuse him. He’s a good player who will get more production with more reps, but he isn’t special.

Both guys are getting Gronk/Kelce money. I think fans will be very disappointed because they believe the Patriots have some elite tight end combo. The only thing these guys are elite at is reaching free agency in a weak TE market with the Patriots having the most money to burn and being desperate to fix the position.

Good news, but there were protection problems on the other side as well.

It's funny that @captain stone kept pointing out the lack of depth of the OL and was ridiculed by the usual suspects. Turns out he was correct.

Okay. At what point is it NOT a coaching issue?

Pure fortune comes immediately to mind as an obvious, though nowhere near exclusive, example.

One of those snaps saw the rook get blown up in pass pro. The end result was the QB taking a knee shot. He was called for a fumble on another snap. Bad coaching would have been leaving him in there
You essentially dodged the question by responding to only a small portion of it.

They went with 3 RBs, even though one of them was a rookie in his first game, then gave the rookie only 5 snaps. Is that on the players, or the coach?

What was the coach thinking (serious question, not an attack in the form of one) there? It's a coaching decision that could have gone differently. BB could obviously have gone with 4 RBs.

Ugh.

In other news, I was just starting to get over thinking the Patriots only had two major things to worry about: fumbles and penalties...
Don't worry, the OL is our #1 strength, followed closely by the RBs at #2.

Justin Herron playing ok until the 2nd half. Why did he fall apart ? And then Yasir Durant replaced him and he played better? That's a question because I havent watched the tape but some in the media said he was ok. It would be crazy not to activate Yodny Cajuste for next week. I really hope he kicks butt at RT...he was suppose to be a 1st rounder until he got injured and he played excellent in one or more preseason games. I'm hoping Yodny starts next Sunday and he plays so well that we have visions of him starting there for many years to come.

Cajuste wasn’t active because he was injured.

Hahahaha

I'm posting this one on my wall. LMAO
Yeah that is a keeper. I mean how many decades do you have to post here until you realize that's your major flaw...that most of the board here is very aware of but you have no clue ? Maybe it's a bot or AI.

I think it's a mysterious injury. But Herron choking like that....don't get it. I am really looking forward to seeing Cajuste start.

Your biggest complaint is that the Pats signed the best free agent TEs at top of the market rates when they couldn’t get any of the great ones who were locked up? Would you feel better today if they got them at $9 million annually? What difference would it make?

No he had a legit injury and was added to the injury report. Hamstring I think.
There would be no point in making up an injury.

Yes, exactly. Since when did horrible value because we need it now become a Patriots concept? Could have sworn I just saw 20 years of us laughing at teams doing that. This is why you fill holes with free agency but don’t build a team through free agency.

Would you feel better today if they got them at $9 million annually?
Getting closer to the mark anyway. They’re not worth that either.

What difference would it make?
What difference would 9M instead of 12.5M, for each of them, make? The answer is 7M.

I can’t believe the same fans brush this off and then cry that Stefon Diggs or Julio Jones are ripoffs because they cost too much. Thuney wanted too much…we offered him $15 but he wanted $18M. So many players have left the team over the Patriots not meeting their price, and fans always cheer it.

Now fans apparently brush off a few extra million, overpaying, etc.

Cult thinking.

Hamstring...ok thanks.

STFU dude, we can't afford to extend Gilmore.

Hamstring...ok thanks.
I think that’s what was reported but not 100% if it was that or a different injury.

Im sure he would tell you he can make a better throw, are you telling me Meyers wouldn’t tell you he should have caught it?

Receivers should catch balls that hit them in the hands. Always.

Are you referring to the play that begins at 8:15?

Because if you are, then you are being unfair to Meyers and too quick to absolve Mac of any blame... That throw needed to be much, Much, MUCH better than it was.
