OT: Fields looked really good in preseason debut

Fields was not the problem today. Brady/Mahomes/Rodgers on their best days would have looked bad behind the Bears' second-string offensive line. I was wondering why the Bills were blitzing on every down, as that is not something that would be replicated in the regular season. I then realized that the Bills weren't. It just looked that way because the Bears' line offered absolutely no resistance to a normal pass rush. It's to Fields' credit that he wasn't carted off and taken to the hospital.

Same as least season.

They got better about midway through the season, but by that time everybody had soured on the QBs.

We are very far away from truly knowing which team struck gold w a young QB in the 2021 draft. I’m hoping NE was the big winner, but that’s impossible to gauge in the summer of ‘21…

No I am not. I am just not in the Brady cult like you are. I have said the Bucs deserved their win and they are one of the top teams in the league if not the top team. I think it is comical that Deus thinks that they are so good that no rookie QB is ready to face them this season. That is silly talk. I think if any of the rookie first round QBs reach anywhere close to their early career potential this year, any of them can hang with the Bucs and potentially beat them.

I am not saying anything I wouldn't say about the Patriots. The Patriots had a lot of luck and good breaks over the years in their Super Bowl seasons. The Pats clearly wouldn't have won the Super Bowl in the 2001 season if the refs called Brady's "fumble" a fumble and they would have been a wild card team if David Patton didn't make a reception while he was unconscious on the ground with the ball sputtering out of bounds. I think there was season where the Pats faced the Steelers without Bettis because the trainer accidentally missed the spot in a pain injection in the groin area and Bettis couldn't play because of it. And on the opposite side of the equation, the Giants got to face the Pats with Brady having a high ankle sprain in the 2007 season. They benefitted from Terrell Owens being far less than 100% in the first Super Bowl vs. the Eagles. You can find plenty of examples where a Super Bowl winner benefitted from things of being lucky over good in individual moments and games.
What team would want to face the 2020 Chiefs with both OTs out? The Tampa defense must have been shaking in their cleats.

Vs the Packers, the Refs let the WRs and DBs play physical all game until Brady didnt convert what would have been his last 3rd down giving the Packers the ball again. What a cheesy BS call.

Some obscure QB will emerge that nobody is talking about and a highly touted guy will struggle.

Accidentally tuned into Felger yesterday afternoon, he was ranting and raving about how the Pats should have traded up to get Fields and how well he played last week. "BB got fleeced again blah, blah, blah. Using all kind of charts and values to justify his position blah, blah, blah.

He played well, but it was an exhibition game.. let him start a couple in the regular season before he is anointed as the best draft pick.

Unfortunately, this will be a talking point today for the rest of sports talk radio..

I've been watching all of the first round QBs and think Mac has looked like the best one. It's early but in my opinion MJ has outplayed all of them including Trevor Lawrence. It's just the preseason but I like what I see so far.

If we're not 3-0 heading into the TB game, then we're not really a serious contender for even a Wild Card spot.

You know better than that. The Patriots are never the same team in November as they were in September. We'll see what they are during Thanksgiving weekend. My guess is that Mac will be under center and they'll be in playoff contention.

Watching the games this week - SMALL SAMPLE SIZE ALERT! - I think:

If the Pats owned the #1 pick, they would have taken Lawrence. He's got a great arm, sees the field, and looks the part. That said, Jones is a helluva consolation prize and may even wind up being better in the things the Pats want from their QB. We'll never know.

Fields looks like a bigger Russell Wilson - as someone mentioned earlier. His rollout skills are going to create new dynamics.

Trey Lance might put Jimmy on the unemployment line because the hype of the kid is going insane out west. He's going to have some serious growing pains, but all the physical tools are there.

Didn't see Wilson, so no comment. Not really a fan, to be honest.

For all of the above, it's way too early to tell anything other than composure and some physical highlights. Having Mac fall into the Pats' lap at 15 is a very good thing. His processing abilities look to be as good as any, and that's their offense.

It's great for the NFL that college is now pumping out such strong QBs, and it's possible this class will be special (a class can only be special once in a long time, because when there are less QB-desperate teams, college kids aren't getting the same chances...that's the sine wave of drafting). I say possible, because watching bombs to wide open guys against 3rd string safeties in preseason doesn say all that much. Wouldn't surprise me to see 5 2021 QB draftees playing at a high level a few years from now. Also wouldn't surprise me to see 3 of the first 5 picked bust.

But this looks like a very strong class - 5 deep, maybe 6, maybe even 7. It's good for the league.
The 49er’s need to make their decision on playing Lance now, or they will be paying Garrapolo 25 million this season. I won’t be surprised if Garrapolo is released.

The Captain is trying to set them up for failure. Iirc he told another poster recently that they should make the playoffs, and it would be a failure if they didn’t. He’s been doing this sh.t for years.

Yes, but what would they do with the money instead? There are no good free agents left. They may as well pay for a year of good quarterbacking.

Maybe. Maybe the only real champ will be Fields. Who knows ? Measuring toughness, heart, study habits, processing - at the nFL level - is an inexact science. I think that even at the highest levels, decision makers too often fall into the trap of over evaluating raw skill and under appreciating smarts & heart. So you get players like JaMarcus R, Jeff George…

I see Trevor Lawrence having a steep climb. Everyone expects him to be the next HOF QB while delivering Lombardi trophies.

I belive that he will be another "if only Trevor had..... fill in the blanks" we would win.

The Bucs are a superteam.

And there it is, the Great American Fantasy finally stated honestly. Falls in line with so many other uses of the word "super" to put something out of reach of normal human experience.

The prior year SB winner is widely viewed as a big favorite again every year, and literally half the time, they don't even make the playoffs.

The fact that the Bucs won the SB last year is a disadvantage this year. And they did it with very good health; odds are, they'll have far more starters out this year, so second line depth will be an adjustment they'll need to make.

We'll see.

Should we still have taken Fields over Mac, asking for a friend?
That’s not just taking Fields over Mac, it’s taking Fields AND coughing up probably next year’s first to move up to take him over Mac - who cost us zilch to take.

I watched the highlights of Fields attempts. Sure, he has a natural strong arm, and he can escape and run. But, he is a gunslinger, and threw a lot of dangerous balls. Not only that could be picks, but he's going to get his receivers killed. He also takes hits and runs around like he won't last a season. I wouldn't be rushing him to start this year.

The Bucs are a superteam. They've played a full season together, figured out that running the ball was necessary and not having false starts and offsides penalties was equally important... they won a ring. Assuming health they have no weakness. They'll be tough for anyone to beat. After them KC is the next closest thing to a superteam in the NFL and the best team in the AFC assuming health.

It's not shocking to say that either Cam or Mac will have a hard time beating these guys, not only that but BB teams typically start off slow the first four games of the regular season. IMO Cam should start the first four games of the year, those are four tough defenses and Mac can watch and learn. That being said if Cam starts off slow, turns the ball over or gets hurt... this all goes out the window. In which case the regular season will be a trial by fire for the rookie.
I think BB will have a good game plan to slow down Brady and the offense. Brady will be motivated to hang 60 on us but I wouldn’t count on that happening. The problem for the Pats in this game is not just the question marks with the passing game but also the Bucs defense happen to be elite at stopping the run which is at the moment the one thing the offense should be really good at doing,

And yet, Mac Jones wont struggle at all because he is a Patriot.

He won at Alabama you know.
