Drew Bledsoe: "Give Cam Newton a Full Year"

This has been my opinion since we picked him. Enough with "protecting" Mac from game 1 or 4 or any of that silliness. If he's the best QB on the team, you play him. The idea that Cam has been cemented in the starting spot after what he did last year is just delusional.

Mac won a chip at Bama under Saban after having one of the greatest seasons ever by a college QB. Heisman finalist. Drafted 15th overall by Bill. He's not some project that needs to be put together.

I was in full support of Cam & bully ball last year. Thought he might be back last Nov/Dec. I've always been a fan, since Florida. It's almost 2022 though, Cam just hasn't been that great dating back before last year.

How many times have we seen Cam move in pocket like this. Open up to one side to move a 2nd level defender and then throwing a ball to protect his target. Nothing mind blowing but again you just didn't see that, that often with Cam last year.

I honestly, genuinely believe real Pats like/love Cam and it's not personal or toxic like some weirdos are saying. I don't think real fans think like that anyway. It's not that deep. Play the best players.

The other consideration is the sooner you get Mac on the field, the sooner he develops. Sitting on the bench is just wasting time.

Its not really his job to lose. I hate to break it to all the Cam fans, but if Bill thought much of him, they would not have taken one in the first round. He is a place filler until he can be replaced. Sorry but doing well against the Eagles C team with 5 seconds to throw the ball is not really giving a good indication of what happens in the regular season.

Nah. I think it will be tough for you to accept when Cam starts as QB. Will you root for the Patriots to win ?

Zero tight ends, OLine constantly injured, no wide receivers beyond Meyers, and then covid brain fog in October. Do you think Cam last year was an accurate reflection of his abilities ? Even the goat the year prior, could only put up 17 points per game in this offense the last 10 weeks of the season after they cut AB.....

When Brady had no weapons we said Brady sucked and kicked him out.

Who cares……you’re full of sh!t anyway
Ah, so you argue that what I said is wrong by making up something I didn’t say, and I’M full of shlt.
I guess this is as close as you come to admitting you are wrong.

Right, because you know I am not and you lied about what I said. So you put your tail between your legs crawl back to your hovel and toss unsupported insults.
You lose all around.

This is true. Those who evaluate Cam this way seem to forget even the goat only averaged 17 points per game in this offense, after AB was cut, over the last 10 weeks of his last Pats season.

Agreed Ring 6 is completely full of ****, one could argue he couldn't get any more full of **** than he/it currently is a long with 70% of people on this board.

For instance:
I’m fine if someone defends Cam but is honest about his shortcomings. If it turns into the “He had Covid” and “no weapons!” that’s when I tune out. I am under the impression Cam is the starter for at least the first month at this point. I just don’t think Bill wants to start Mac right off the bat unless he’s far and away leading the race.
Yea man. Sure. Because I'm sure at some point in your life there has never been a time where instances happened outside of your control that impacted your ability to perform one way or another. I mean how can you even call yourself a football fan if you don't even understand how football works or is supposed to be played? What is the point of having an offseason every year? What's the point of OTAs? Mini camp? Training camp? Why does every single team at every level of the sport "waste" their time with these practices if they dont have any effect or bearing on how a team performs during the season?

Unlike 31 other starting NFL Qbs last year, Cam did not get to partake in any of those practices, he had 5 weeks to learn the playbook. F I V E. If you don't think for a second that that had any impact on Cam's ability to perform last year you are kidding yourself. And even still Cam had the Patriots one playcall away from being 3-0 before he got Covid. Oh know!!! I mentioned it! Cam Newton got Covid before their week 4 game! No excuses though, right? Even though Cam had to miss that week/game + another week of practice after already being behind on the playbook and it finally caught up to him. His lack of knowledge/comfortability in the offense really showed after that happened. Totally unacceptable. What a garbage Qb right? Man. I'm legit surprised some of you have made it this far in life having virtually 0 common sense. It's really sad to see

Oh yea, and don't even get me started on the offensive weapons around Cam. Damiere Byrd, where is he at these days? You know Cam's #1 WR last year? You didn't forget about him did you? Well thank god N'keal Harry was lined up on the opposite side to take some of the pressure off right? Or what about the ghosts you guys had playing TE last year? None of that matters right? None of that should have any impact on Cam's ability to perform, right? What a joke you are to say crap like that. Learn the game first then voice your opinion. I recommend the book Football for Dummies, or an Almanac or something, educate yourself. Happy reading.

Yeah. It's weird to hear definitive bashing of Cam yet not then also bash the goat QB the year prior for also not doing much with the same crappy weapons and bad OC, having a really bad offense every week after AB left. It's some cognitive dissonance going on.

It’s a good thing we have posters like you around to write a dissertation in Cam’s defense. I used my eyes. We could’ve had Julio Jones, Randy Moss, and Gronk all in their primes but when the QB is skipping the ball off their toes and completely unaware of any form of pass rush we will not succeed.

"Drew Bledsoe... said that he'd like to see Newton play a full year in New England's offense after a challenging 2020 campaign for both the player and the team.

"I think they've got to let Cam go a little bit. And I would really like to see Cam get a full year," Bledsoe said. "Last year, the cupboard was kind of empty up there, and I think everybody recognizes that now. There wasn't a lot in terms of weapons for him. They went out and got some weapons, and I think it'd be great to see Cam get back out there and show why he was an NFL MVP."

Talk about making a lot out of nothing.

All Bledsoe says is he'd like Cam to "get back out there and show why he was an NFL MVP" and see him "get a full year" with the new "weapons."
What's wrong with that? BB and Josh aren't going to keep sending him out if Cam clearly doesn't have it anymore at a high level and the team would be better off by giving another guy a chance to grow.

I just think that's the right strategy and that Belichick won't get sentimental about giving Cam too long to prove himself and that Bledsoe, of all people, understands that better than anyone else.

Nothing to see here. Let's move on.

As many have said, the probability is exceedingly high that we'll see Mac take over for Cam as a result of injury. The latter's already had a hand injury during the summer. Last year he had Covid and the supposedly very painful abdomen injury sustained in the Cardinals game. If Mac were the backup last year, I'd be willing to bet he would've gone in for the Chargers and Rams games (when Cam was on the injury report but still played and threw for 84/69yds).

Now that I think of it, I wonder if we'll see fewer Cam rushes this year. I noticed he hasn't had one yet this preseason (although he should've taken off during his one bad throw to Michel? during the Eagles game).

I agree. What's wrong with BB's decision to repeat over and over that Cam is the starting QB. Agree. And if Cam isn't cutting it then change QBs for the good of the team. Seems reasonable. Except there are some adamant calls to ditch Cam already.

Agree. And, people have a short memory about the "Brady is done" comments out here two seasons ago when he was surrounded by mediocrities. I'm NOT comparing Brady to Cam, but I am saying that the latter hasn't even had a chance to show if he still "has it." If he doesn't, BB will be the first to pull the plug and see if someone else can do the job.

Yeah absolutely. Great point. This offensive cast was so bad last year even the goat the year prior didn't do much once AB left.

Makes a ton of sense to give Cam a try this year, see how well it goes, no need to rush the rookie. Obviously reconsider if Cam isn't cutting it. Just think it's weird there are people here who don't want Cam to succeed or the Patriots to win if the rookie isn't playing.
