Happened last week too. May mean something, may not. What we do know is that there are a lot of players on the DL making a legitimate push for a roster spot, and it's not inconceivable Anderson finds himself the odd one out.

I know we've seen Akeem Spence getting extended looks with higher groups. Wondering if he's a dark horse 53 candidate at this point.

Didn't get to catch the game, but it sounds encouraging. Did I hear that right Harry got hurt?

I noticed that also from both games. He seems to really be getting a shot, but I haven't necessarily thought he stood out. The one who gets the most buzz is Carl Davis, and I don't see both Davis and Spence making it at the same time.

Then you have Adams who probably falls into a similar category as Spence. Haven't been super impressed with him but I think he's in the mix.

And see, you may not be wrong about the individual observations, but to say it was the same old Cam... I just can't agree. He stepped UP in the pocket (which I don't consider dancing), and was accurate with his throws. Showed nice touch on the TD to Meyers to let him catch and run with it, and the one time I thought it looked awkward was the scramble dump off to White (but I think the bobble there was on White, not on Cam's throw).

Again, it's one quarter of a preseason game. It proves nothing long term. I just think we get so caught up in "If I say a nice thing about Cam, people will think I'm a homer" that we refuse to acknowledge he played well. As though if we say too many positive things about him, Belichick will trade Mac Jones.

I don't consider stepping up into the pocket, dancing. Brady stepped up quite often.

What I refer to as dancing is when the QB's feet and lower body do not follow the fundamentals of sound throwing mechanism, i.e., not being inposition so that the QB is ready to fire at any given time. One example of that would be "breaking the chain" where the lower half of the body isn't in position to pass on velocity to the upper half, and ultimately the arm, prior to a throw. This means the arm must work twice as hard to generate the same velocity as when the legs are in place and able to deliver torque to the upper body. Brady was a master of that.

Cam has worked hard to contain that unorthodox backwards tilt where his front shoulder flies up, prior to throwing, but the footwork still doesn't leave much to be desired for- he still doesn't follow through completely, e.g., step into his throws. That may be a result of him not really trusting his foot, post-lisfranc surgery. Either way, it's going to continue to be a factor, especially when the pocket collapses.

I honestly do hope Cam can play like a few of those snaps looked in the 1st qtr against a 2nd string D. (see the crosser to Bourne)
I just don't believe he can - consistently. (see the horrible checkdown to White)
I fully get that if Mac plays he won't be as proficient as we've seen in preseason-no-scheme defenses. But I've seen enough to know that he can handle the process and has the tools to grow, even quickly. So, does Cam's rah-rah "leadership" and occasional running ability supersede the system tools that Mac possesses and the need to move on to the future with a guy that can re-energize the fan base - and that is a huge part of this whole thing from an ownership standpoint. Even if Cam plays almost all year, and does fairly well, are they going bring him back with a longer term contract? Not when high-1st-round Mac has shown the capacity he has already. that should really seal the deal.

To me, the absolute best case scenario is Cam playing well this year and Mac taking over either later in the year or game 1 next year. Similar to the Mahomes situation.

Not saying we should expect the same results or that it is the only path, but I think this is the best case scenarios for all parties.

- Pats do not have to rush their QB of the future
- Cam rebuilds his value and gets a contract from another team next year
- Mac gets more time to develop, learn the system and adjust to the NFL

Now, of course, as a fan, I would prefer for Mac to takeover right away and have a Herbert-like impact. But that does not seem realistic.

Serious question though...is this 3-game preseason going to have a lot of games like last night, where one team treats it as their preseason showcase (like game 3 used to be) and the other plays their scrubs? Seems like Patriots and Eagles weren't in alignment about which preseason game would match up starters versus starters.

It is. It's optional, but recommended, to add that you have no problem with the way he dresses.
As the premier racist on here, I have to say that I cannot add that disclaimer. But I’m allowed to add last year’s disclaimer - he’s a great teammate.

Just making sure: is your argument that we're less likely to give Mac Jones a chance because Jarrett Stidham pissed all over himself when we gave him a chance?
Not at all. I just think it's unlikely Jones gets to play with the #1s in the last preseason game.

  • Anyone hoping for Mac Jones to start day one had their hopes dashed last night. Not that Jones did anything wrong, but Cam just played really well. He was decisive in his throws and he had zip on the ball. Yes, it was against the Eagles' second defense, but he was sharp. I think Cam had to lose the starting job this preseason for Jones to start and really hasn't shown much in the preseason games to lose the job.
This is why I am hesitant to think Jones gets run with the #1s next week.

so let's review the film and see what was asked of him and how he performed before we suggest he sucked because he didn't light up the box score.
I get the distinct impression there weren't many pass plays called for our lone remaining TE not to mention I'm curious if the playbook even has many 1 'true' TE sets/plays (meaning with a lineman in the other TE spot) that aren't runs or goal line type pass plays?
