Patriots-Eagles Joint Practice (8/16)

..Why??…I wonder what’s the connection there..

There is precedent - Belichick started rookie Eric Zeier (6th QB in '95 draft) over Testaverde. The latter started well (3-1, 4th best rating) in the first month then lost 3 in a row, and then BB decided to switch it up. Zeier won the first game (one of the worst defenses) then stunk it up. Zeier was pretty much done for the rest of his career. He alienated his starting QB and divided the locker room. Curious to see how the current situation plays out.

Tampa Bay Times:
"The bottom line is we're not producing enough points offensively and I think we need to find a way to get a little more production," coach Bill Belichick said Monday.

"It doesn't mean that it's permanent. It's going to just change the lineup and see if that will _ along with some other things _ improve our production on that side of the ball."
No one and nothing was saving the 1995 Cleveland Browns.

There is a difference between saying Bill values experience and leaders over untried rookies. I completely get that and would agree. I would even go so far as saying the rookie has to be clearly much better to win the spot. Just handing the job to the rookie sets the locker room up for chaos, which is the last thing that any coach should want.

However, that is different than stating the it goes against Bill's core beliefs to start a rookie over a veteran.

In the end you have to look at all the positives and negatives when you make that decision. Destroying the morale in the locker room might not be worth a slightly better qb.

I would have thought Sony Michel's brother would be named JVC or Panasonic.

<rimshot>Thank you! I'll be here all week.... Try the veal.
Are we still doing phrasing or?

1. If Smith's injury is really a LOW ankle sprain, he'll be 100% in short order. Probably by the end of the week. Very different than the dreaded high ankle sprain.

2. Harry wins contested balls. That was his book coming out of college. If the Pats won't throw those to him, then trade him. if they do throw those to him, he'll do well. I don't understand why BB took the guy if he wants to play the super-careful style. Contested balls are not what the Pats do, but that's exactly what Harry is known for. Makes no sense - and no, I'm not surprised that he kills it in practice because they throw him the damned ball, unlike in the games! Again, if I'm a GM with a QB like Matt Ryan, who makes those throws all the time to trusted receivers, I'm grabbing this guy.

3. Judon is an absolute stud. Been saying it since before the Pats got him. Watching the Ravens last coyear, adn his name was the one called that stalled almost every drive. The only defensive FA on his level was Leonard Williams. Amazing pick-up at a great price. He stays healthy and the only Pats currently in his stratosphere are Gilmore and maybe Hightower (if the year off doesn't hurt HT).

4. Well, no **** Sony Michel can catch the ball. And he's superb when running past the line of scrimmage. Duh. yet another example of not using the guy to his strengths for years (anytime he was in the game, you knew he was running, which helped nothing - that was the most frustrating part of the New England Pats for me over the last few years). I always thought Sony would shift from main guy to become the next Jatmes White type on the Pats.

5, Newton gets LaCosse killed. He got Harry obliterated last year, too. We used to use this as our biggest argument of why Brady>Peyton, and here it is now. Protecting receivers with ball placement is one of the most important parts of being a QB.

6. Agholor's contract was the one that had me most nervous (Godchaux right behind), so it's good to be hearing that he's looking like the 2020 Nelson, not the years before that.
I love these dual practices. Both teams will get more out of them (reps, development and evaluation), than they would in 2 or 3 practices alone.
I think you are dead on about Harry. He rarely got separation in college, so to expect him to get here is ludicrous. Very curious pick given that THIS offense is so predicated at throwing to the "open" receiver. But on the other hand the "back shoulder" throw IS something the Pats have done regularly over the years, so expanding that concept shouldn't be THAT hard. But you are right, he can't show what he can do if they don't throw him the ball.

When Sony came out of college he had the rep of having very good hands. I think they rarely threw to him because they had James White for that job and he did it at a very high level, Now that James seems to be winding down the focus might turn to Sony, who I think might be an upgrade since his would be a better runner from both scrimmage and after the catch, If he is willing to take a James White type contract next year he MIGHT be the replacement BTW James had a sup par year last season, and isn't lighting it up at camp so far. Could HE be one of the surprise cuts, since Stephenson reportedly also has good hands. Just a thought,

You aren't paranoid when everyone is out to get you. That's Cam Newton by this time. The media is acting like Brady never threw a receiver into a big hit. And while he was good at NOT doing that (as the years went on) he DID do it. The media is acting like Newton committed a crime. But that is because the media has an agenda (I believe) and that is to hype the kid and denigrate the vet. Jones is the shiny new toy and everyone wants to play with it right away. I trust in Bill and his 50 years in the league to pick the time of his ascension. Jones IS the future. No doubt about that. Sitting a year didn't hurt Mahomes, and sitting THREE years didn't hurt Rodgers. Sitting a few game or even a year is NOT going to hurt Jones

Agholar is going to be a pleasant surprise for the Pats. But I think fans better get used to the idea that he will occasionally drop one. Fans accepted Julian even though he was usually among the leaders in dropped balls. I thing the end result will be that he will be a plus for this offense.

Can't wait for the next practice and the game on Thursday.,

The problem with the term is that is can mean everything from "bruised" to "ligament(s) stretched a little" to "Ligament stretched a lot and will never be the same" to "partially torn ligament and will never be the same." In the two latter cases, the other connective tissues and muscles will have to be strengthened to overcome the damage in order for the player to get quickness back. That takes some time.

"Upper" is worse in part because 1. that term more often means a stretch or tear, and 2. there are fewer other ligaments and muscles around to make up the difference over time.

I totally agree that sitting Mac won't hurt HIM! I do however think that starting Cam will hurt the TEAM!

If Cam has been decent last year, nobody would try to hype the rookie. But he was so bad that nobody want to have the same experience again and Cam showed me nothing in this TC that he will be better than last year and the rookie looks to be better than Cam.

I’m sorry but KC and the GB had very good QB in place. We haven’t. Sitting a year wasn’t the difference between a career of mediocrity and an hall of famer for Mahomes. He would have been good even if he played his first year.

You had a giant hissy fit post a few weeks ago declaring how everyone is a hater/stupid if they’re pessimistic on Cam before he has a chance to perform in training camp.

Now that Cam is the same in camp as we said he was…you claim the media has an agenda and can’t be trusted because of their bias against Cam.

Jesus.
I trust in Bill and his 50 years in the league to pick the time of his ascension.
A meaningless statement that‘s always thrown in for self-credibility, like a stamp of authenticity. Translation: I’m very opinionated; how dare you be opinionated since you’re not Bill and don’t know his thought process.

Cam 62%
Mac 68%

Cam 62%
Mac 68%

I don’t really like the backup defense narrative. Yeah he plays against backup with backup receiver and backup oline. They say it like he was going against backup with the 1st offense

I like Cam, but “pre-brain fog Cam” is a myth. Defenses didn’t know how to attack our offense those first couple of games & Seattle (at the time) had a historically horrendous defense. Cam was just flat out bad (besides the running) last year.

There's something to the "defenses not knowing how to defend us" claim though....but what I saw was a decisive QB who saw that there were no options other than taking off and running or throwing the ball to reliable Edelman. That Newton can win games in the NFL. He's the same guy that is 2-0 against the Brady Patriots. The COVID brain fog was a real thing, IMO. That coupled with losing targets in Edelman, later Burkhead, White having an off year, and etc.... just snowballed.....

But that's just my opinion. I disagree that it was a myth. And I also am not denying that Cam still has not looked better yet in camp as well....
