Patriots-Eagles Joint Practice (8/16)

1. If Smith's injury is really a LOW ankle sprain, he'll be 100% in short order. Probably by the end of the week. Very different than the dreaded high ankle sprain.

2. Harry wins contested balls. That was his book coming out of college. If the Pats won't throw those to him, then trade him. if they do throw those to him, he'll do well. I don't understand why BB took the guy if he wants to play the super-careful style. Contested balls are not what the Pats do, but that's exactly what Harry is known for. Makes no sense - and no, I'm not surprised that he kills it in practice because they throw him the damned ball, unlike in the games! Again, if I'm a GM with a QB like Matt Ryan, who makes those throws all the time to trusted receivers, I'm grabbing this guy.

3. Judon is an absolute stud. Been saying it since before the Pats got him. Watching the Ravens last year, adn his name was the one called that stalled almost every drive. The only defensive FA on his level was Leonard Williams. Amazing pick-up at a great price. He stays healthy and the only Pats currently in his stratosphere are Gilmore and maybe Hightower (if the year off doesn't hurt HT).

4. Well, no **** Sony Michel can catch the ball. And he's superb when running past the line of scrimmage. Duh. yet another example of not using the guy to his strengths for years (anytime he was in the game, you knew he was running, which helped nothing - that was the most frustrating part of the New England Pats for me over the last few years). I always thought Sony would shift from main guy to become the next James White type on the Pats.

5, Newton gets LaCosse killed. He got Harry obliterated last year, too. We used to use this as our biggest argument of why Brady>Peyton, and here it is now. Protecting receivers with ball placement is one of the most important parts of being a QB.

6. Agholor's contract was the one that had me most nervous (Godchaux right behind), so it's good to be hearing that he's looking like the 2020 Nelson, not the years before that.

Just curious where you get that starting a rookie qb goes against everything Bill believes in? Brady wasn't good enough to beat out Drew his first year, and it was close the 2nd year. That is pretty much the only time in the past 20 years it has even been an issue. Making conclusions about what Bill believes in based upon that seems pretty silly.
There is precedent - Belichick started rookie Eric Zeier (6th QB in '95 draft) over Testaverde. The latter started well (3-1, 4th best rating) in the first month then lost 3 in a row, and then BB decided to switch it up. Zeier won the first game (one of the worst defenses) then stunk it up. Zeier was pretty much done for the rest of his career. He alienated his starting QB and divided the locker room. Curious to see how the current situation plays out.

Tampa Bay Times:
"The bottom line is we're not producing enough points offensively and I think we need to find a way to get a little more production," coach Bill Belichick said Monday.

"It doesn't mean that it's permanent. It's going to just change the lineup and see if that will _ along with some other things _ improve our production on that side of the ball."

Funny how I don't see any tweets from this guy during the middle portion of the practice session when the Patriots were doing better. I swear everything I've seen from him in this thread is just "Eagles are absolutely demolishing" and literally all the other reporters have more nuanced takes.

Yes, we know it was Cam. And yes, we know that he led LaCosse into the hit. Been several Tweets by people responding to the Pats Pundits in that regard

EDIT: No, I didn't think you were questioning me.. I shoulda put up the links to the tweets initially..

Shocker, another hospital pass by Cam. Harry knows what that is like (x 2 last year).

Oh, moosekill.. You're being mean to Chris. Don't you know that he's an EXPERT on all things Patriots.. [sic]
Lmao

No problem happy to answer.
Many ex players and reporters have stated that Bill values the veteran experience and leadership of Cam Newton. No matter what some here think of his decision making and processing skills. Bill reportedly values that he has performed in the NFL and played very well as well as took his team to a championship game at the pro level.
If Cam was a rookie and playing the same he is now I don’t believe there would be any doubt as who the starter would be.
Many with far more knowledge of the Patriot than myself and believe it or not Da Bruinz. Believes that Mac would have to blow Cam away to start week 1.
By all reports he it’s a closer contest than we as fans believe, and Bill is believed to go with Cams past proven track record if the players are close.

Add to that, Bill stayed with Brady after Bledsoe recovered precisely because Brady had the "hot hand".

Yeah, I had to stop posting his sh*t because he’s clearly biased. Not even any neutral reporting.

For me Bill clearly play favorite. I don’t know what Cam has done to earn everything that has been handed to him by Bill. From all report Mac has been better than Cam 75% of the time in training camp. He should be the one getting the reps with the 1st not Cam. I have the feeling that Cam could throw 10 picks every practice and still be the starter.
