OT: Glenn Ordway Retires From Afternoons At WEEI/Boston

I cannot stand the current line up. Always talking/yelling over each other. Annoying AF. I would expect the replacements to be worse, given the state of sports talk radio in Boston and the pandering to negativity and hot takes. Good for the Big O to get out while the getting is good.

i liked ordway enough. better than the alternative. most of the time i have to listen to national sports talk just to get away from the bashing of the local teams. that's not to say the national sports talk doesn't bash the boston teams, they just don't concentrate on them. there's a lot of ny/philly love out there because of where the hosts are from. whatever happened to unbiased reporting ?

I know too many first person hearsay stories about Glenn Ordway's off air activities to wish him well in his retirement. I don't wish him ill of course, but his rise to the top did not happen with great integrity to say the least.

Eddie Andelman agrees.

Speaking over each other, to the point where one really believes that one is more knowledgeable makes most of sportstalk radio unlistenable..

That along with searching for controversy and hidden messages, makes me listen less and less than I used to..

I've moved to podcasts. I will listen occasionally but much less than I used to. I find that I can listen to the podcasts I want and get info I want without suffering thru the yucks and chit I could care less about.

I've been really enjoying the Curran/Perry podcasts.

Nelly was so good.

Replacing him with DeOssie was the beginning of the end.

Yeah, I thought Nelson brought something important to the table to keep it from devolving into shouting moron radio.

Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed Smerlas and Ordway but Nelson was a lot more grounded and cared about the game more.

I was going ask but got shy for a second. Believe it or not but I don't listen to any radio unless its on at work or something. Same with the podcast, little time and and just never got into them.

I've been wanting to start one for a while now but couldn't find another person that could commit to it.

What do you guys listen for? What type of stuff do you want to hear? From the type of info to the types of personalities you lean towards?

I'm really interested in what the audience wants to hear. Everything, small stuff to big deals or deal breakers. Would appreciate any feedback not just from the posters I quoted.

What did the bloviating midget do? Something shady? (At least we can assume it didn't involve women unless he paid for them.)

Patriots wise, I am listening to Tom E Curran.

I cannot stand the bombastic BS but i'm totally ok with humor and respectful back and forth debate. Interviews are also interesting.

I like Curran and Perry b/c well I think they are knowledgeable, personable and fairly level-headed in their analysis.

I've been ignoring Curran ever since he started cooking up stupid hot-takes in recent years. I guess I'll give him another try.

I think there are Two Currans.

TV Curran and sportsbeat Curran who is the same guy he was at the ProJo.

I've met him couple of times and he seems like a down-to-earth guy...

I want to know what qualified Glenn Ordway to do color commentary for the Celtics way back when...Ordway is like 5'2', bet he never played basketball past elementary school....
Overall, I wasn't a huge fan of Ordway. He really pushed the "pro Parcells" envelope during the big Kraft v Parcells "feud" and sought to stir schitt up at every chance...and I've said it several times here, WEEI was in serious deliberations/discussions about having a "Jets Monday" show as at the time the team's broadcast rights were with 'BCN and there was no 98.5 Sports Hub. The young fan boys and fantasy nerds who hopped on board the Pats bandwagon either in the early 2000s because they won Super Bowls or in 08 because they were a cool Madden team with Moss will never know how divided this sports market was back then. But I highly suspect many of those losers will be gone from this site and this fandom over the next few season when the team kind of blows.

When Ordway first started his show back in the day on afternoons on WEEI, I liked his show. I felt over time his act got stale as it appeared his ego got in the way by talking over guests and callers and taking celebrity idiot contrarian callers just so he could make them look dumb (and him smart in the process. Haven't listened to him much in recent years.

I will give Ordway credit, he was a pioneer in changing the way sports radio is done (at least in this town), but he also overstayed his welcome. He is not alone in the latter. It seems that most sports talk show hosts have a short window where their act is fresh and interesting before it gets stale and forced. Just look at his across the dial competitors. Felger and Mazz seem to struggle to find contrarian positions on everything and even say on the air that they are taking the contrarian view just because everyone agreeing is boring.

I wish Ordway well and I won't really miss him. I hope they replace him with fresh and more interesting talent, but I fear it will just be more retreads.

great turn of phrase
