Was The Draft Average After The First Round?

You wish everyone to say that we had a great draft after R1; one of the best in league. I think that those who believe that all post on patriot message boards.

I am NOT "down" on the draft. We had a GREAT first round, and an OK rest of the draft (average after the first pick). That is not a terrible draft. Belichick chose to fill this year's needs in free agency, focusing the draft (after R1) on needs for the future. I applaud that strategy.

BTW, had Belichick drafted as well in the past (great first and average thereafter), I would think that an improvement.
Man, have you changed in the tenor and joy of your posts.

Are you watching F&M a lot?

I thought the first two days of the draft went great, better than I ever expected!

On Day 3, the running back from Oklahoma was nice pick because it was a potential replacement for burkhead!

after that it looks like he took flyers on certain guys.

Dave Zeigler did a masterful job in his first draft as GM. His advice to Belichick was priceless. Belichick really put his trust in Zeigler and it paid off.

Clearly it wasn't Ziegler as he's been here since 2013. The change has been Eliot Wolf, Groh, and Patricia back in a front office role. It must kill Ziegler that Patricia is the one signing all the contracts now and Eliot Wolf swung the Barmore trade. Ziegler isn't anywhere near the GM. Ziegler does a good job folding his arms in the video clips though.

.

I may be misinterpreting the message intended with this thread, but don't ALL drafts look pretty average after the first round? Sure, you could have your favorites coming, guys you hope to grab later on that you like, but after the first 20-25 players (sometimes less), you could look at any prospect coming out and find warts.

Sometimes, there are expected starters or major contributors at RB and on the OL. We might even expect major contributors at TE or WR in the 2nd or 3rd. Many expected that last year at TE (and perhaps at LB).

Personally, after the first pick, I don't expect a lot of help from the draftees this year. Some one or two MIGHT step up.

If the emphasis is on 2021 contributions, I would say that this a decidedly below average group. Is it great in future value? Maybe, maybe not.

To be clear, I'm fine with Belichick's approach. He got everything he wanted in free agency (or will when we trade for Julio). His approach for draft success was simple: find a quarterback (a position of critical need), and find players who will be contributors in Years 2-4.

However, cap isn't all that wrong. After Jones, don't expect a lot, certainly not a lot this year.

Day 1: Above average (we had the 15th overall pick, after all)

Day 2: Average (gave up way, Way, WAY too much for somebody with that high a bust potential, who doesn't fill a position of great need, and who might very well have been available at #46 anyway)

Day 3: Very, VERY below average (nothing wrong with Stevenson the player, but we needed a WR there, NOT another RB)...The rest of the picks were worthless, UDFA-caliber Crap.

Wow, this is just about the most positive post you have ever given to the greatest football mind in the last 40 years. I can't believe my eyes: "Above Average." I'm absolutely thrilled by your new found homerism. Mark it down Ladies & Gents, Captain Sunshine is all aboard the Positive Train! No, his beer mug isn't half-empty, it's half-full. Watch out all you Little-Old-Ladies, here's the man to get you across the street in heel-kicking style. Cat stuck in a tree? Fuggeddaboutit. Woo-woo!

Zeigler was only put in charge this off-season, the rest work under him. Ziegler was working instead of sidling up to Belichick to try and curry favor. Ziegler is clearly the difference, he deserves all the credit.

Thank god Ziegler was there to rebut the horrendous advice Wolf was giving Belichick, Ziegler saved their off-season, Wolf could have destroyed it.

@mgteich , you absolutely need to subscribe to "The Athletic"....Jeff Howe might be blowing smoke up my arse, but his draft pick articles have me convinced that this was an ABOVE AVERAGE draft AT MINIMUM.....

Just this morning, he had a great Tre Nixon write up...the kid ran a 4.43/40 at his pro day and a laser timed 4.38 in high school....and he has been doing 16 hour days at Gillette..... I now think Ernie got us a MAJOR steal in round 7 there....

This was an above average draft
DAY ONE - Great
DAY TWO - OK
DAY THREE - below average

It's awesome how worked up you are over this. I'm so glad we stopped sucking at drafting with Wolf, Groh, and Patricia running the show for BB.

So far we have gotten through rookie weekend and OTA's which were closed to the press, and judgements are being made??

It is a huge leap from College Ball to the NFL, so might want to reserve judgement until at least November... I like this draft, while it did not address WR issues, huge strides were made with Hunter Henry and Johnnu Smith.

This off season has been incredibly long, I miss the controversy of the playoffs that we usually experience..

Maybe they won’t help much this year, but I fully expect Barmore, Perkins and Stevenson to impact this team in the very near future. Also think McGrone will be a good player for us once healthy and Bledsoe will take over one of the ST spots as well. Just my opinion

IMHO, this was a “foundational draft.” We (allegedly) got our QB of the future & a potential dominating DT to wreak havoc on opposing QBs of the future.

This was widely considered a weak draft. I prefer to look at it as one of the great unknown drafts, though they may end up as the same thing. And I really don't get people pimping, or bashing, this draft after the first round. Even that first round is more of a guessing game than usual. So call the draft average. Call it awesome. Call it absolute garbage. This year, more than ever, team post-draft rankings before the season, and particularly before training camp, are meaningless.

I expect Barmore to see pass rush duty early. I think Perkins and Stevenson will play special teams. Because Stevenson is unique among the RBs in versatility, he could make game day roster on teams and get some RB snaps backing up all of the RB responsibilities.
And injury history. With the exception of White (who endured pretty much the worst year ever last year in every aspect of life) the current stable is not one that has historical background of availability through 16 games.
