Who is going to be starting in the middle of the 2021 season?

Do we think they're going to run a system that suits Mac more than Cam, and wait for him to be ready to run it?

Or start with a Cam friendly system that changes if/when Mac beats him out.

I want Mac to start game 1 but he has a lot to learn and needs to earn it...and gain the respect of his teammates. Not starting till then...whenever that is...unless Cam hands it to him with horrendous play.

Cam returned to start and PLAY.

He is guaranteed 3.5 million and the rest of his contract is attached to playing time, pro bowl, playoffs, etc.

The legend of Mac Jones gets better by the day.

If Newton was good enough to be guaranteed the starting job for 2021, the Pats would have given him far, far more than an one year deal with only $3.5 million guarantees. Newton got a high tier back up contract.

Sure Newton intends to start, but he is guaranteed nothing. And Mac Jones could take away the starting position as soon as the preseason if he clicks right away. I doubt he will, but Belichick is going to play the guy who will give him the best chance to win. If he can take Troy Brown out of the starting line up when his skills started to fade, he isn't going stick with Cam Newton if Mac Jones gives him a better chance to win. The only way he would stick with Newton in that situation is if he didn't think Jones was ready to start and starting him could set him back long term.

Cam signed the contract he could get. He signed a prove it contract last offseason and he proved he didn't deserve a guaranteed starting job. Cam is now a guy who has to fight for his starting spot. He is not given anything. Not one team in the league would guarantee his starting spot at this point.

He is the odds on favorite to start right now, but he has to play well enough to keep that spot.

The cool thing about incentives is if the player doesn't meet them, you don't have to pay them. It's almost like it's not a big commitment.
