DRAFT BGC 2021 Pre-Draft/Patriot-Type Prospect(s) thread

This score reminds me of the idiotic Patriots draft system instituted by McDaniels/Caserio that focuses on height or combine stats for WRs/CBs and has resulted in a graveyard of bust picks. Instead of looking at a core skill of whether a guy can get open or cover receivers.

What is the correlation between a DT being good, with their broad jump or other combine stats? How about the core skill of the job - is he the best DT at stuffing the run? I hope he drops because other teams stupidly pass on the kid because he isn't a great broad jumper.

.
Do you have any sources for the claim that the Patriots don't care about game tape when scouting WR/CB/DT?

He really does seem like a humble, nice dude. Turns it on when he's on the field though. Aggressive, nasty play style. Raw as hell. Run & pass game he has almost no idea what he's doing. So when it comes to taking on blocks, rush variety - counters, block recognition and disengagement ... He has a lot to learn.

He has some burst, a little twitch and nice change of direction. If he has a crease he can flip his hips after delivering a serious jolt. Maxed out frame but hes ripped up and could get stronger. Plays with good leverage but that could improve as well. He's quick at times but hands could improve a little. Once and a while he'll duck his head both defending the run and rushing the passer but once he gets with a good coach so much will change.

He has + hips, twitch and power and utilizes all pretty effectively. Improve his hands and technique. Develop some solid counters.

Round two guy imo

thanks

don't see him as a pats prospect, as i don't see them headed in that direction around the time he'll go, i don't think

just impressed me for the kind of kid he sounded like....

If Atlanta picks Kyle Pitts I think we might still have a shot at Lance/Fields depending on who the 9ers pick and would not have to trade up to 4. I expect bengals with either Pitts or Sewell and Phins with the leftover from Sewell Pitts or Chase. So we might could trade uo to 7 if carolina stays at 8 and still be able to get a QB. Do you guys think BB will do it in that scenario? and what would the estimated price we need to pay be ?
If you believe the trade value charts, the #7 is almost exactly worth #15 and #46. Of course that doesn’t matter if another team is willing to pay more than that.....

Anyway, if the Patriots really believe in the guy, that’s a very small price to pay to land a potential franchise QB. And it also helps that they filled their glaring holes in free agency so could potentially be able to handle the draft pick void. I think they’d do it if they believe in the guy.

I said focuses on height/combine-measurables. Did not say entirely ignores tape. Of course, any player can look good on a highlight tape.

Todd McShay recently did a new mock where Fields falls all the way down to 11 and the Pats trade their 15, 96, and next year’s 2nd (or 3rd) with the Giants to draft him. That would be a dream scenario.

1. JAX - Trevor Lawrence
2. NYJ - Zach Wilson
3. SF - Mac Jones
4. ATL - Kyle Pitts
5. CIN - Ja’Marr Chase
6. MIA - DeVonta Smith
7. CAR (via trade w/ DET) - Trey Lance
8. DET (via trade w/ CAR) - Jaylen Waddle
9. DEN - Patrick Surtain II
10. DAL - Jaycee Horn
11. NE (via trade w/ NYG) - Justin Fields

Edit - for the curious, Penei Sewell drops all the way to the Chargers at 13 in this mock, which I just don’t see happening. But man, if Mac Jones going that high would throw the draft into that much chaos I think I’d be all for it!

Yeah, I've seen a few stories/articles about San Fran being interested in Jones at 3, but during this time of the year, not sure if you can trust any of them. It's going to make this years draft very interesting, starting with that third pick.

If it gets to 7 and Carolina wants the guy, why would they stay at 8? They could easily flip with Detroit if Detroit knows they're still going to get the guy they want. How do the Pats match that without giving up way too much?

It depends on whether they are targeting a certain player or would be happy with three or four guys and feel that they could still get one of their top choices at 15. In the latter scenario, if Carolina is only offering a third round pick this year to move up one spot but the patriots are willing to give them, for instance, 15, one of their fourth round picks this year and a first next year to move up to 7, they may prefer the patriots offer.

That was my thought too. Detroit needs help everywhere. There is no specific are imo they are really good at. My thought were they take BPA at 15 and have two firsts next year to operate and may take the Goff replacement of the future if they don't want to keep him the next few years or go with players to surround him with talent cause otherwise he is no good

Sorry been busy at work, just about done with PTP board. That'll be posted tonight.

Anyway Echols is a nice nickel/dime piece. Slight of frame but effective & willing in run support. Not much hesitation for someone 180-ish.

Easy pedal & turn. Smooth lower half that hips easy with his target. Like how patient he is with underneath stuff. Very adapt at letting it develop, staying on his man back shoulder/hip before coming up for a the swipe. Very good at playing the shallow routes across the MOF.

Good play & makeup speed. Seems to recover well. Seems to have decent IQ.

Seems to be comfortable and effective in zone/man. Good eyes and instincts although he could do a better job trying to bait at times.
So, what grade do you have on Echols?

I love Mocks like this that pull the Compensation out of their rear ends.. That's more than ARIZONA gave to move up from 15 to 10 a couple years back.. Like SIGNIFICANTLY more..
