Idle thoughts - Jimmy G, Cam and Stiddy

"Very good" is a stretch. Also there is no comfier system for a QB than Shanahan's.
It is not a stretch. Out of all NFL QBs, how many have made it to the Super Bowl? Do you even understand what it takes to make to just one during a career? Pats fans are such spoiled little brats. Funny how Bourne just came from SF and said that system was more complex than NE, but you know more than he does.

How would Bourne know that? He has not even been on the team for than 60 seconds.

As far as Jimmy G, I don't even know If I want him for the 8mill or so that I did earlier.
I think Stidham gets a raw deal on this board and in the media. This is a kid that hasn't even run a practice week leading up to a game. This year the team barely practiced and Cam got the practice even the week that the Kid started.
I like Kellen Mond a lot. I don't trust Mac Jones, he was surrounded by NFL talent and I think his arm is best suited for a dome and not december in New England/Buff/NY. Cam Newton at this stage I am afraid is just M L Carr.

I like good TEAMS...in fact I like good PATRIOT teams...like the team in 2001 that won our 1st super bowl with an unknown 6th round draft pick nobody. You see, back then there were thousands of "I want a good QB like my Bledsoe!!!! Waaaah Waaah Waaaah".Thank the stars BB did NOT listen to these plaintive cries from the cheap seats.

Flash forward to 2021 and it's the same friggin' tunnel vision. Relax.
Hard to believe that it was 20 years ago. I can still picture my boys (college kids at the time) sitting beside me as we watched the Pats get introduced as a TEAM in the SB, and then, when AV was getting ready to kick the game winner, my youngest (never a big sports fan) looking at me and asking, so this is a big deal huh dad?

The difference I see now is that we don't have a Bledsoe or a Brady.

No goddyamed "wordsmithing" or any other shyt. THat team won on the leg and nerves of the greatest money kicker in NFL history and the clutch route running and receiving by Troy Brown, buttressed by a defense that knocked Warner loopy. ...and YOU know it. Don't pull this crap with me. That TEAM is why the Pats won the Super Bowl. All Brady did that game was follow directions and not choke. AFTER that game is when the fanbase began to realize that MAYBE Brady "had it". It wasn't confirmed until two years later.
Ahhhhh... Troy Brown... my favorite Patriot evah!

where the hell are you getting I'm comparing Stidham to Brady?????????????? I'm saying COMPLAINING ABOUT THE QB like he's the only important piece of a team winning is TOTAL BLINDNESS. You've been brainwashed by Ring-0Around-The-Rosey 6 and his Cam hatred
I have to admit to not liking Cam either. Never have. But like all Pats fans, probably even Ring-Around-The-Rosey-6 :), I'm hoping he succeeds.

If Belichick trusts Cam, I'll follow along with a sense of guarded trust as well. There must be something there, and with the rest of the personnel moves it feels like "something" special is starting to happen. All will be clear by 1 May when the dust settles from the draft and undrafted FA's start rolling in. The Pats will be that tough physical team that no one wants to play, at the very least.

Brady couldn't beat out Bledsoe.

To be fair....in 2000, Brady was NOT beating out anyone at all. But he performed well enough to stick as the #4 QB much to my chagrin (felt that he cost us a roster spot for a good defensive player).

In 2001, Belichick was seriously considering pulling Bledsoe BEFORE he got hit by Mo Lewis. Brady looked very different in camp that summer...and elevated all the way to the #2 spot...beating out Damon Huard who was a pretty good veteran himself.

Stidham's situation is completely different....he came in as a 4th round pick...sat behind the greatest QB of all time....but performed well enough for the coaches to roll with him as the #2 for an entire season. In year 2, he got dinged in camp...and a former MVP took all the reps....then he never got to start a single game....not so sure it was that, "he couldn't beat out Cam"....I am thinking it was more like the coaching staff didn't have the time to get him ready to start a game during the season after he missed camp time. In week 4....Hoyer started for a reason....

Brady couldn't beat out Bledsoe.
Even when the team had nothing to play for...Stidham still couldn't even beat out a guy who can't throw a football.

And he never will.

Just not an NFL caliber QB. Truth hurts.

That's the fundamental difference between the two. BB said it himself. Brady took a gigantic step forward in year two. Left Huard in the dust. Stidham in year two went from presumed QB1 to a throne pic to losing his job to freaking Brian Hoyer. I mean if you're not even good enough in your second season to win the backup job over a guy like Hoyer then you shouldn't be long for this league. What else needs to be said?

He was injured the first week of camp....and it was an injury that kept him away from reps for 3-4 weeks...which is why Hoyster started vs. the Chiefs....

Stiddy is an interesting case...the knock on him before he came here was that he wasn't in a pro-style offense at Auburn....and needed to learn on the fly. He did okay his first camp...looking great in pre-season...probably the best pre-season I ever saw from a Patriots back up in the Brady era (side note: Cassell looked like CRAP in the 2008 pre-season and I thought he should have been cut then....so what do I know?).

I think Stiddy is worth looking at in a full fledged QB competition this summer. Any rookie we take with #4 or the #15 or any other pick we might have will not be NFL ready anyway....except maybe Mac Jones....so there'll be competition this summer....Stiddy still has about a 15% chance of being named the week 1 starter...say Cam's arm is actually shot....and the rookie isn't ready...we could be looking at #4 lining up under center....

So.. SB, what are your thoughts on Stidham???? You and Dropkick are sooo funny. Mention Stidham and SB1 shows up to rip him, mention Josh and Dropkick shows up to rip him. Kind of like Bettlejuice.
Saying he sucks isn't ripping him it's saying what is factually true. Funnier that Stid lovers are holding on to the dream.... and comparing him to how the greatest QB in NFL history got started :D

If that happens then the Patriots plans at QB in 2021 have gone really sideways and we're probably looking at a 3 win team. He really is that bad.

He wouldn't be the 1st QB to arise after his first 2 years on the bench. He was developmentally behind coming out of college, then didn't have a real shot last year due to injury and Covid. He's got the arm and appears to have the right attitude and aptitude. Just needs a chance to show his stuff this training camp. He has a chance to beat out Cam imo, he seems better than some of the other washouts we've seen over the years.

If he turns out to be a total bust, that does hurt all of us. I've seen him throw in person and he's definitely got that "live" arm and he's athletic. I just hope he can put it all together and make something of himself this year. I'm not holding out hope he's a revelation, but I do hope he can be a decent back up. It can't hurt that he's been working hard with the new guys to get ready for the season almost half a year away:

If Belichick drafts Mac Jones, the Patriots will have one Alabama, and two Auburn quarterbacks competing for the starting job.
