I think we need to revisit this after the draft and see what the unit looks like. A big "if" we keep both Gilmore and JC with the addition of Mills and I think our secondary is really strong, even with losing. Chung. We improved our front 7 and added pass rushers . If our young players ( Dugger, Wino, Uche, Jennings) improve, our defense should be top 5.

Would love to bring back Guy and J McCourty back as well and I have a feeling we'll add a piece or two via the draft. Our defense is much improved from last years unit.
I love Chung but did not expect much here anyway since I think Dugger and Phillips are perfect to fit this role. Without Chung and worse pass rush and third down defense our secondary was fine last year. I think better early down defense and better pass rush will make them even better

Wow adding Guy really loads up the DT spot. You can have GOD, Adams/Davis sharing the nt spot and Anderson and guy sharing the other DT. I suppose Cowart now gets a shot as a 3rd down DT, and will probably drop the extra weight he had to carry. wise and Anderson figure to be the passing down DT with someone like Judon or winovich or Jennings moving inside too.

This is the deepest the front 6 has been in a very long time.

I think if Davis and GOD are out we play two 3 T or 4i like last year

We don’t want to do that though. Last year we had everyone playing a spot bigger than they are.
There are 3 basic roles for a DT in our D (other than short yardage)
1) Play in the middle and eat double teams all day
2) Play over the G, see fewer double teams and be more mobile.
3) Rush the passer in pasig games situations from anywhere along the line.
Ideally 1 is a huge bit do mobile guy, 2 can play in the middle in a pinch but shouldn’t and 3 should only be on the field on passing downs.

Last year we had no one as a 1. We had guy who is a 2 and Cowart who should be a 3 bulked up to a 2. They split the 1/2 roles. Butler was a 3 forced to be a 2 and was awful at it.

This year we have 3 1s that are probably better 1s than anyone we used (except Davis himself in limited action) 2 2s that are better than anything we had last year (considering guy played out of position half the time) and Cowart wherever he fits if he makes the team.
Tremendous improvement in role based talent and depth.

I agree but last year at times when we were out of NT and couldn't stop a nosebleed we played sometimes our DT way more outside didn't we? Maybe i misidentified the formation/line-up our DT. But of course if we have one who can face a double team I agree with your take here. major improvement

We do a little bit of everything, I’m talking what we base out of.

I was only talking about the specific scenario of both our NT are injured and we are left with Guy/Anderson/Cowart/Adams who are all more a 3 T than a double team eater

Right now this defense is easily a top 10 defense on paper and knocking on the top 5. Out defensive backfield is elite, likely top 1-3 in the league. We have a lot depth at LB now and a lot of versatility there too. The one thing we are missing is a LB that can really cover RBs and TEs. Perhaps that's one of our bigger DBs, but having a LB than can cover would be nice. The D-Line seems to be improved and maybe much improved. I'm not sure any of the returners or free agents can be classified as a great run stuffer, but with good edge setting, they can use a team approach to stop the run.

Who is Devin’s backup right now? Mills?

Hightower rushes the ‘A’ gap very effectively. Pats missed him tons last year.
Hightower is effective anywhere you put him
One of the reasons people don’t realize how good he is really is, is that he is so versatile BB uses him all over the field.
Put him in a clay matthews role he would lead the league in sacks. Put him as an off the ball inside lb and he is the best in the league. He does everything any lb does very well. Bb gets so much milage out of his versatility. All in all I say he is the bet defensive player bb has had since Seymour.

Lawrence Guy coming back is awesome.
Team still doesn't have a true NT. Godchaux can play it but he's not a NT anchor.
Wrong GOD is a NT.
Where do you get the stuff from where you just make things up about players in your mind and post it as if it’s a fact?

seems to get better everyday!

Godchaux isn't a Ted Washington or a Wilfork. He gets pushed back. Look at the tape. Even his high tackle season he isn't a wall, the Dolphins were 28th against the run that year. Just because your warped opinion says he's a NT doesn't mean we're actually set at the position.

.

Exactly. There isn't a true NT run stuffer but the totality of the front7 should be pretty good. For covering TEs and RBs we'll see if Phillips or Dugger can play in the box.

If you watched the tape you would see that exactly the strengths GOD has is playing the double team and holding his ground. But sure look at tackles and team rankings to assess an individual player. That will get you the reputation you have, a no nothing who spouts things he makes up.

please cut me some take of him getting consistently pushed back.

oh and by the way, who in the NFL is Ted Washington or Vince Wilfork right now?
