Godchaux isn't a Ted Washington or a Wilfork. He gets pushed back. Look at the tape. Even his high tackle season he isn't a wall, the Dolphins were 28th against the run that year. Just because your warped opinion says he's a NT doesn't mean we're actually set at the position.

.

I've watched everything I can find on Godchaux and the last thing I'd say about the guy is "he gets pushed back". I rarely see that. Hell, I rarely see him get pushed back when doubled. He's strong as a bull and anchors well. I'm quite optimistic he'll be a strong addition here. He might not be quite in the mold of Wilfork or Washington but he's the closest thing you'll find in the today's modern game.

Anytime I saw him on the field, I'd watch him like a hawk to see how he'd do. I never saw anything remotely bad like Jordan Richards, but he's just not a playmaker at all. I'm still waiting for that message sending hit, forced fumble, INT, or something! The board and some in the media overrates him badly for some reason.

He did everything a future star needed to do, coming from where he came from, in a pandemic year, with mediocrity in front of him.
Give him a first real training camp, a 2nd year jump, and quality players in front of him, and watch.

But 0 or 1 technique isn’t everything anymore like it was back in the days of Washington and Wilfork. Defense has evolved into a hybrid chameleon style.
Spot on - there's a reason they don't exist in high quantities and are not being churned out of college - the game has evolved into pass first even at the college level. While run stuffers still do exist, THEY are the niche.

Much like the "coverage LB" how many 6'4" 260lb guys with speed are there - and don't become higher paid TEs?

The players aren't stupid either - why would I put on 40-50 extra pounds (even some of that muscle) slowing me down to get paid as a 0 or 1 technique when I can shed 20-30 pounds, be a DE or penetrating/sack focused DT and get paid 20 times more cash over the course of a career?

What about Jalen Mills? Or SloJuan?
I expect that Mills would step in if McCourty were out for any reason. He has experience at the position. While we don't know how good he is, Mills should be an upgrade over Brooks (and Williams).

For 2021, we are probably fine at safety with McCourty, Phillips, Duggar and Mills. This issue is that we should draft for next season, not counting on rookies to be major contributors. McCourty will likely be gone in 2022, so arguably we need a free safety.

What I highlighted in bold is an example of how he's been overrated without merit. I can't recall one memorable play where he jumped out on the screen at you and his lone pass breakup of the year was celebrated. In his 2nd year, I expect to see a major jump in his game based on what has been said about his athleticism which I haven't seen yet.

A future star? Just be grateful if he doesn't become another in a very long line of 2nd-round busts here....

exactly! I would be happy if he could get lined up properly every snap next season!

I think they're going to be good and I'm teetering between top 5 and 6-10.

Our defense is so much improved from last year on paper and talent alone. I think we should be a top 3-5 defense as we stand right now. Still hoping we resign D. McCourty and we'll see who we pick up in the draft, but really liking the potential that this group has.

It will be better because , well It has to, but I think it would help them greatly if the offense could do a better job of keeping them off the field by converting on 3rd down and not putting them in bad positions. Its hard to tell what a team will or wont do, injuries and things, meshing, communication. Its hard to go buy a lot of guys and it just works. Sometimes it takes time.

a pattern matching cover 3 defense like we run, means you have to own the middle of the field. Last year, we simply did not do that. Unless we get a fattie for the nose this year, I am not sure we have enough now to solve that.

ps: regardless, if our defense is on the field for almost 40 minutes per game, because newton is beyond horrible, then they will get injured and they will wear down and they will be one of the worst units in football!

OK, was the defense one of the worst last year?

If the Pats are worried about an FS behind McCourty, Harmon is sitting out there.
Every time I see the name Harmon I think of him jumping over Kearse in the SB instead of knocking the ball away. I wouldn't mind seeing him come back though. He had some positive plays in his time here.

I agree on the Seattle game!

but we do need a back up free safety.

This. Any defense will crack if the offense consistently blows.
