Why didn't Belichick light up his Benjamins on fire like that when Brady was here?

I really would like to know what exactly "mortgaging the future" means. A term that gets loosely thrown around.
Basically going all in. For example
I can make a set of moves that hopefully make me a top 3 team for the next 4 or 5 years. Or I can do x,y,z and be a top 10 team for the next 10 years.

I can only think of one team right now who seems to be able to spends a much as they want and win with no reprucussions and that’s the dodgers. The way they scout, draft and develop is absurd. Just bringing in talent through trades and drafting. It’s crazy.

Bill Belichick underestimated how well Tom Brady would age is the main reason. Given the rest of the roster, he didn't think Brady was worthy of the all in treatment what he figured would be the last few years of his career.

I believe Bill Belichick was surprised at how well Brady did at Tampa. He probably thought Brady wouldn't do as well on the deep throws but there is a difference between throwing the ball deep to Evans/Godwin vs what the Patriots had in 2019-20 and even the year before that.

For sure if Brady had stayed and the opt outs didn't happen last year, Patriots wouldn't have this much cap space. But there is almost always a way to create cap space. The question is if you are thinking medium to long term which Bill Belichick is also paid to do is whether or not it is worth it.

It is okay to admit that Bill Belichick with 20/20 hindsight may have made the wrong decision with Brady. More of Belichick's decisions have been very good than bad.

Brady wanted to leave and from multiple reports, was sick of the way Belichick still treated him like any other player. Belichick's not gonna change his ways but I also don't fault Brady for wanting to leave either. I'm surprised Brady lasted this long given how hard Belichick coaches his players.

I KNOW (raises hand enthusiastically):

The assets they didn't spend on offensive weapons for Saint Tom?
They used on defense and special teams to win championships because...
Tom Brady doesn't play defense or special teams.

No. That's not it. Or, rather, that's only a part of the story.

How many times does this have to be discussed before people get it? He didnt have the resources its literally that simple. They mortgaged the future to win, a decision they'd make 11 times out of 10. There was no easy way to fix the cap short of doing what they did. Brady didnt want to waste a year of not contending, a smart decision by him i will add.
Expecting a regular person to trust what amounts to second grade math over conspiracy theories and emotionally charged cynicism is a tall order.

Everything align this year for that. Bill didn’t had those players on an already contending team. We had no talent and a lot of money. It was moves it needed to make if he wants to be competitive one last time before he retires since he has 3-5 years max. In my opinion, he doesn’t have the time to rebuild through the draft. Now we were lucky this offseason with the diminishing cap because a lot of teams weren’t able to be suitor on those players due to cap restrictions and helped keep the price lower than expected. In a normal offseason it would have been tougher to get those players or they would have cost a lot more

Brady played for years with scrubs because Belichick wouldn't sign anyone worthy. Then Brady leaves, and BB starts spending like the Kardashians' on Rodeo Drive?

Why? Why couldn't have BB spend that money when Brady was here? Give him the weapons he needed? That sure would have make him stay? No?

DM Tom Curran and ask him if you can join his “I miss Tommy so much” therapy group”.

This is a unique year because the Pats are one of only a few teams with money to spend. So instead of competing with 31 other clubs for a player, they were competing with maybe 1 or 2 other clubs.

Most of the NFL is still trying to get under the salary cap by 4 pm today.

It's very similar to the term "being in cap hell" which also doesn't seem to exist.

I think a better question to ask might be why wasn't Brady here when the Benjamins got lit up. Was Brady responsible for all 65M?

When your starting QB(Tom Brady) has a salary cap hit of $25m vs you starting QB(Cam Newton) having a salary cap hit of $5m, you can get a few extra free agents.

Threads like this make me wonder about the influence of Sportstalk Radio and its influence on listeners, most of the past 20 years there was not a lot of cap room available, it isn't that complicated.

Felger echoes the same limp response, "the cap is crap" and many follow along without trying to understand the complexities involved.. there will be those who try to sell us the concept that BB is being propelled by what happened to Brady.. Brady chose to leave, he was not pushed away by BB. Then there is the proverbial "Kraft is cheap" while almost always spending to the limits of the Cap.

BB has always pretty much operated the same way, when he was with Cleveland when he released Kosar in favor of Testaverde ( he almost got run out of town after that move)... BB is pretty much blind to controversy and always has his concept of what is best for the team first and foremost. He favored Brady over Bledsoe, much to the chagrin of many of the local pundits. Releasing Lawyer Milloy and trading Seymour are just a few..

Despite all his "screw ups" he has had one bad season with the Pats, and one might think the sky has fallen...

BTW there are many who think he is the greatest NFL coach of all time..

Interesting and kinda comical conspiracy theory but no that didn’t happen.

You have to learn to recognize that is just clickbait. Honestly it's still amazing that after all this time, people fall for clickbait, not understanding that the more outrageous or controversial an article is, the more engagement it generates, and the more ad revenue it creates. It's all about the money. I guarantee you that whoever wrote that didn't believe one word of what he wrote.

Also, I have it on good authority he can't throw the ball and catch it.

Plus those crafty Buccaneers have him locked in to age 47 on that same deal!!!!

You get what's happening there right?

To answer the original question... money, more specifically cap space.
