Brady played for years with scrubs because Belichick wouldn't sign anyone worthy. Then Brady leaves, and BB starts spending like the Kardashians' on Rodeo Drive?

Why? Why couldn't have BB spend that money when Brady was here? Give him the weapons he needed? That sure would have make him stay? No?
How long have you been a fan? Five years or less?

Gain some perspective.

Yeah players like Darrell Revis, Rodney Harrison, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Roosevelt Colvin, Stephen Gilmore, Mike Vrable, were scrub FAs not to mention re-signed players like Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Logan Mankins, Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman all scrubs.

Brilliant take, keep it up

Its more fair to blame Bills poor drafting for the state of the team in 2019 than not spending on FA's that they didn't have the cap space

When guys get priced out or too old, you replace them through the draft. Bill did a horrible job of that. as guys like Hogan/Amendola left he never adequately replaced them. Same with Gronkowski (Although the way Gronk retired put the patriots in a situation where Free agency was over). So the young talent that was supposed to "replace" the older guys never materialized and the money came due with kicking the cap down the road leaving the patriots with a poor roster in 2020

imagine patriots drafted Chubb and then DK metcalf. you may be looking at a totally different 2019 and outcome with brady.

He has spent the cap every year.
This year he had a lot of it to spend in a short time.
The teams surrounding Brady in his 20 years here were better than this one.

Off the top of my head, there were some players that passed on signing with the Pats such as Derek Mason in 2004, Steve Smith and Emmanuel Sanders in 2014. Adam Humphries was another, but I don't count him as he's irrelevant. However, my main gripe with Bill during the Brady years were two long stretches of bad drafting that cut short their first run and missed opportunities with the 2nd run. Lots of quality players that would've helped a need on either side of the ball, but were passed on players that weren't needed and eventually flamed out. Nail in the coffin was the 2019 draft.

Patriots were close to cap every single year and Belichick surrounded Brady with players that allowed the team to compete for the SB every single year. I'm gonna assume you're 6 years old.

Wow,

The Patriots went to 8 straight championship games between 2011 and 2018, with 5 SB appearances, with the team at the cap almost every year, along with playmakers at almost every position in all 3 phases of the game, with incredible depth in most positions, and yet people complain that BB did not do enough?

Just because a draft pick played well on another team, it does not mean that same player would have been successful on the Patriots. Similarly, failed players on other teams sometimes 'miraculously' have success on the Patriots.

If anything BB gave Brady a lot of offensive weapons from 2007-2013, but they were not successful for the ultimate prize. Once they started rebuilding the defense, the team had great success from 2014-2018.

If not for injuries to some of these key players in some of those years (2011-2018), the Patriots could have won 8 SB in a row.

Yup, what others said.

1.) First time in awhile that we've had such little internal talent that we HAD to get external talent.
2.) Without the internal talent, we had money to spend elsewhere.
3.) Let's not pretend that BB didn't get some good free agents in the past. Guys like Colvin, Harrison, and A.Thomas were considered big free agent pick ups to go along with others vets that were added via trades like Welker, Moss, and Dillon. It's just a different way of doing business this year.

Google "NFL salary cap."

It took a weird combination of circumstances (that includes Brady leaving!) to free up that giant chunk of cap space at once.

I've been critical of Belichick at times but come on, it's been 20 years of dominance and 6 titles, and the only serious down years on offense with Brady were like 2006, 2013 and 2019. And it's not like the Pats have camped out at the salary cap floor every year.

Bill Belichick underestimated how well Tom Brady would age is the main reason. Given the rest of the roster, he didn't think Brady was worthy of the all in treatment what he figured would be the last few years of his career.

I believe Bill Belichick was surprised at how well Brady did at Tampa. He probably thought Brady wouldn't do as well on the deep throws but there is a difference between throwing the ball deep to Evans/Godwin vs what the Patriots had in 2019-20 and even the year before that.

For sure if Brady had stayed and the opt outs didn't happen last year, Patriots wouldn't have this much cap space. But there is almost always a way to create cap space. The question is if you are thinking medium to long term which Bill Belichick is also paid to do is whether or not it is worth it.

It is okay to admit that Bill Belichick with 20/20 hindsight may have made the wrong decision with Brady. More of Belichick's decisions have been very good than bad.

He NEVER had 65 million in cap space, EVER.

'Brady played for years with scrubs'

The 6 rings won in NE say Brady was not playing with scrubs at all. Each Super Bowl team was an overall great roster.
That’s right; Brady is clearly no Cam Newton, who will do the most with the least support around him. Cam would have three-peated twice with those Patriots rosters!!!!

This again. People seem to forget we had a top 5 offense for about a decade from 2007. There was no real need to spend extra on offense - it was Bill'a job to put the best team on the field. Bill gave Brady exactly what he needed - which by the way included a HoF TE, a long with a couple of pro bowl calibre wide receivers, and a number of good complementary pieces.
It's damned if you do/don't with Bradystans. And I'm not bashing him before they get their pitchforks out. This has nothing to do with Brady himself.

BB had to balance keeping three teams strong (offense, defense, special teams). He easily could have ignored one or two and loaded up the offense with the best weapons in the league but then those same people would complain how BB wasted Brady's talent by not giving him a defense. Just like people remember Manning with the Colts.

It's amazing that our main rival through the Brady era was arguably the most gifted QB I've ever seen, yet he only won one ring with his original team until he bailed.

These fans it's not even a grass is greener situation. They stood on a beautifully maintained lawn for nearly two decades. The second we get a brown spot, they point to the one green spot on the neighbors lawn and say "if only we had that patch of grass over here".

This fanbase is the Yankees fans of the 00s of the NFL.

I think whatever opinions are held regarding the topic question were formed long ago and are so dug in that debate would yield nothing. What matters most now is the team has spent, early and often, probably even overpaying in most instances, all of which is counter to their history. This is an attempt, whether good or bad, time will tell, but an attempt nonetheless to get back into contention right now. I think some of these signings (specifically at WR) are getting a bit blown out of proportion, and I still say tell me who's the starting quarterback and I'll tell you the record, but the outcome of all this will be the final chapter of Belichick's legacy.
