Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

I am thinking the same. It's a real possibility though. SF needs cap space and the biggest, easiest way to do that is to cut Garoppolo. I think Bill leaked that he really wants Garoppolo bad in an attempt to make SF feel like it was a foregone conclusion, then he signs Cam instead and cuts off negotiations. Now SF only has a few days to find a different suitor before free agency begins. Jimmy also has a no-trade clause and can veto any/all destinations if he so chooses and force his own release.

I think the odds that JG is on the '21 49ers are substantially higher than on the '22 team.

Why eat that much dead cap space when you don't even have a proven replacement yet. If I recall correctly next year they can move on from him for cheap.

For heaven's sake, what receiver or TE wants him throwing them the ball? Of course Damien Harris was psyched because he basically has a FB to play with.
I think Cam is much MUCH more highly regarded by NFL players than by us fans, at this point. They remember 2015, we only remember 2020.

It'd be only $2.8m dead money and $23.6m cap space saved this year. $1.4m dead money and $25.6m saved if they cut him next year.

I am thinking Lance makes sense too. Lance can plug into the Newton-type offense and provide continuity for McDaniels in 2022. Lance definitely needs a year at least on the bench but has lots of potential.

Wondering if Bill and Josh see potential having a guy like Newton/Lance in their system and want to keep pursuing that path offensively. Defenses are built to stop the pass first, run second these days so it is a good way to exploit that.
Plus it will make Bacon happy!

You know, the Patriots drafted Cannon as a Guard. If Mason can play Center, that's a mauling OL,

HUH??? The Patriots didn't draft Cannon to play GUARD. They drafted him as an OT.. ONWENU is whom they drafted to play guard.

Now we see why Stidham didn't get to play in the final couple of games in 2020.

Not only does this prove the team thinks Stidham absolutely f'ing sucks....and they're right about that...but they wanted to see if Cam would give them a reason to bring him back for another year. So here we are.

This doesn’t stop the Pats from drafting a QB but yikes. Not a good start.

Interesting

I find that odd. Not available? So they really are planning on riding with him until they can get someone else, and not before

The fact that he is guaranteed that much means we're stuck with him and he's going to be the starter unless he's injured. *sigh*
Guaranteeing him $3-5 million doesn't mean he is definitely going start. That type of money would put him around the top of the market for a back up, but again it isn't outrageous.

If they are definitely intent on drafting Lance or Jones or someone else they see as the QB of the future. Newton may just be insurance that if that guy isn't ready to play day one that the Pats have someone to be the starter. Personally, I would have gone the Ryan Fitzpatrick route for that guy, but it looks they are going with Newton.

But either way, if they are looking at the draft for their QB of the future and not trading for Garoppolo or someone else, they aren't going to get anything more than a journeyman QB. And unless the Pats significantly improve their roster, they are not contending for even the division with a journeyman QB.

Cam can only be better than last year. With one more year and a full preseason plus (fingers crossed) better weapons and not (fingers crossed) getting covid he has to be better than last year. That knowledge plus the hope that this is part of a strategy of drafting a good qb and this might be ok. Of all the FA qbs there weren't many decent ones so if everything pans out as i hope then this should at least be better than last year. It can't be worse. Can it?
It’s really not the weapons. Cam is just bad, he can’t throw. You could put the best weapons out there, and he can’t hit them. Bad footwork, slow, long release. He’s just bad.

I know BB really likes Cam, but how can he ignore the fact he can't throw the football?

Would any decent QB sign for a team with this receiving corps?
The receiving Corps isn't the issue. The issue was CAM's inability to throw the ball consistently. The receiving corps is why Cam had a 65.7% completion percentage.

Literally the worst move in Belichick’s Patriot’s career. Unbelievable. Literally ruined my weekend. Just a TERRIBLE waste of cap space. Can you imagine being one of the worst at your job in your career path, and getting a HUGE raise ? Can’t remember being this angry as a Pat’s fan.

Some great dynasties take a long time to get back to even getting to a Super Bowl. Cowboys went from 1978 until 1991, Steelers went from 1979 until 1995, 49ers went from 1994 until 2012, This is the beginning of what’s going to be a LONG wait to return to greatness, and Bill Belichick won’t be around when it happens.
I'll say it. This is the move that makes Bill's exit come a lot sooner than it could if it turns out to be a mess.

I think will see Cam throwing a lot to the back of Brown’s head. Trent will have a concussion at the end of the season.

i ask myself what will be the excuse for Cam when he will suck and still can’t recognize blitz and still throw 5 yards passes in the ground after a full offseason.

Must have mixed up 2020 and 2021 then. My mistake, nevermind the dead money then.

If they’re going with Newton as the veteran presence this season, I wonder if they have their eyes set on Lance? They are very similar to one another.

Can he though? He could be worse than last year too. When the end comes for football players it comes quick.
