Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

I just dont see how we are going to draft someone like Lance with the 15 pick. But im down with that strategy.

It is like FA they will have a projection and value attached to him and if he is still available at a range that is not an insane overpay (e.g. outside top 8) they might move up.

If someone takes him in the top 7 then so be it. You can only control so much.

Set your own acceptable ranges for a move up yourself. Maybe its top 10.

This is clear that the Pats will be drafting a QB in the first round of the draft next month. Let's hope all the good ones aren't snapped up prior to the Pats' picking.
Either that, or they didn't want to negotiate a trade or FA signing with the other side knowing you have an empty hand.

Hahahahaha

Note: I'm not laughing at Cam. I'm actually OK with this and not surprised. But all those QB speculations are now golden. And the hawt takes of how receivers would want to come here are now platinum. The ones about Bill never signing Cam again, well they're Adamantium.

That makes more sense. So it may be conceivable then that Cam doesn't even start. Say he is only guaranteed like $3-5 million and the rest are in incentives. That type of money isn't outrageous for a back up these days.

I think this bodes well for a pro bowl season for Jacobi Meyers but at the same time we should just trade NKeal Harry now. Total waste of space and starting Harry kills the offense because it's like a totally wasted route runner and defenses can double other players without getting punished for it.

I agree, though I am curious if Cam has agreed to competing for the starting spot and has said he will be happy to ride the bench for a year if that's how the chips fall. I know he wants another chance badly.

My knee jerk reaction was obviously to hate the move.

But I can kind of rationalize it. Arguably the worst weapons in the NFL outside of RB. No good offseason. Solid start derailed by COVID (idk if COVID symptoms include making you throw the ball 4 yards short of the receiver but he fell off a cliff after that). Good locker room presence for the team. Hopefully a good mentor/example to a young drafted QB. Who knows, maybe they fully believe in him and don't even draft a QB early and focus on WR/TE instead.
My feelings exactly. I wish they signed a guy that could throw a 12 yard out, but it is what it is. With the amount of cap space and what looks like a buyers market in FA, Bill has no excuse to not have a strong supporting cast around Cam.

Part of me can't help but think that this is Bill trying to show he's smarter than everyone else. I am not paying 30m to some 28 year old kid who runs around and doesn't execute the game plan. I'm not paying a ransom for Russell Wilson to leave his linemen left looking like a-holes. We don't need to spend 13% of our cap space at QB to be successful.

The fact that he is guaranteed that much means we're stuck with him and he's going to be the starter unless he's injured. *sigh*

Unless JimmyG becomes available late or a drafted QB turns into the second coming during camp it is hard to imagine anyone beating Cam out.

Jimmy would be the exception because he would need tremendously less catch-up on our offense.

You have access to his contract ? Maybe send the details to Reiss & co. because nobody yet has reported how much is guaranteed.

Which free agent doesn't want to come here and catch passes from a legend like Cam?! This team will be stacked come September.

I am thinking the same. It's a real possibility though. SF needs cap space and the biggest, easiest way to do that is to cut Garoppolo. I think Bill leaked that he really wants Garoppolo bad in an attempt to make SF feel like it was a foregone conclusion, then he signs Cam instead and cuts off negotiations. Now SF only has a few days to find a different suitor before free agency begins. Jimmy also has a no-trade clause and can veto any/all destinations if he so chooses and force his own release.

This news just crushed all the exitement I had for this offseason.

Literally the worst move in Belichick’s Patriot’s career. Unbelievable. Literally ruined my weekend. Just a TERRIBLE waste of cap space. Can you imagine being one of the worst at your job in your career path, and getting a HUGE raise ? Can’t remember being this angry as a Pat’s fan.

Some great dynasties take a long time to get back to even getting to a Super Bowl. Cowboys went from 1978 until 1991, Steelers went from 1979 until 1995, 49ers went from 1994 until 2012, This is the beginning of what’s going to be a LONG wait to return to greatness, and Bill Belichick won’t be around when it happens.
Might not watch the games if Cam is the starter for 16 again. Bill forces out Tom ****ing Brady, watches him win the SB, then subjects Pats fans to this two years in a row? ****ing sickening.

well, a hell of a lot more than wanted to come here yesterday with stidham as the only rostered B

So you're saying he and the team were lying about his (lack of) symptoms? There are different medical protocols that were set for symptomatic vs asymptomatic infections, so they potentially put other players and coaches at risk by lying and only following the less stringent protocols. If you're right, this is probably going to cost us another draft pick.... hopefully not a first round pick
What are you talking about? Even asymptomatic COVID patients can have brain fog or other lingering effects - see Tatum, Jason, for example.

Cam can only be better than last year. With one more year and a full preseason plus (fingers crossed) better weapons and not (fingers crossed) getting covid he has to be better than last year. That knowledge plus the hope that this is part of a strategy of drafting a good qb and this might be ok. Of all the FA qbs there weren't many decent ones so if everything pans out as i hope then this should at least be better than last year. It can't be worse. Can it?
