This was such an asinine pick taking a guy who not only tore his ACL once in College, but TWICE! The hype around this guy while playing was funny hearing how Easley "almost" got to the QB. Clowney has taken that s**t to another level.

He wasn't exactly a slug, but I hope Bill didn't draft him to actually be a CB. He was a stud kick and punt returner in College and looked like the next Devin Hester.

One of my most hated picks. I've explained numerous times why this pick was insane.

amen brother!

If he replaces D-Mac as i mentioned Pats actually gain 2021 cap space..

ps
In any case NE have a ton of cap if they need it - you have to look at it at least over next 2 years. They are #1 in the league by far in combined 2021+2022 effective cap space!

Not sure we want to replace a 4.38 forty guy with a 4.61 forty guy at free safety. Even at 32 I think McCourty is still a lot faster. Free safeties have to cover a lot of ground. Two free safeties at $10M each is doubtful, in my opinion, even with our cap space. I love JJ III and we do have to replace D-Mac, so I am not sure.

You don't need to look at those numbers when you are talking about NFL vets, you have all the tape you need to see how fast someone plays.

Its true he is at his best as split-safety but his true versatility could be used in a number of formations for BB He excels in man coverage as well and in NE will be accompanied with 3 CBs most of the time.

In the “using opportunity to get younger on a favourable market“ scenario i was speculating about Pats would also move on from Chung. In that case i would maybe double-dip here bringing another chip vet to play alongside JJ III. F.e. id love to take a flyer on Malik Hooker and i also wouldn't mind bringing back Harmon on a low vet deal.

There is also a question what the plan is with JoJu, he could be another option as he spent a lot of time with safety group. Jonathan Jones could be an option as well. D-Mac was just too good and too healthy to really see much else

But if the price tag goes down for one of the top 4 great younger safety vets (JJ III, Williams, Maye, Harris) - and it should - id be there to take advantage..

S POOL

This is a deep FA pool so teams who need starting safeties will have a bargain. NE is not among those returning 3 starters, Bryant who stepped up in rotation and adding Chung as well.

Haven't looked much yet at Draft class so hopefully we get some input from the usual suspects. Seems short on top and deep in the middle.

I don't think he exists.

Judon wants $20M per year. No thanks.

Wouldn't shock me if they go after a couple of veterans, Van Noy being one of them as they need edge setters badly. You can't rely on Uche, Jennings and Winovich flipping a switch and becoming stout against the run.
There are a couple on the FA market right now.

And of course you don't pay Judon that kind of money.

I would love Antoine Harris here as a make-up for the Glitch Richards pick of the same year, but that would also be too much invested in the FS position...I would gladly settle for a Harmon return unless Miami gets into a bidding war for him...

Watched tape of uphoff from one of the mac schools I think.

looking at the speed, instincts, special teams, and communication skills makes me think, he is somewhere on the patriots draft board.

Spotrac MV for him & 2020 comparison w/ Suh.

I view Tomlinson more of a NT run stopper than every down linemen and Suh is a three down linemen . It's Not easy to compare them. I would try to compare Tomlinson to others maybe

The difference between the two would become more clear on a 3 man front, where Suh almost certainly plays on the end.

Yeah and both would have different roles here. Suh could play on third down as well I guess Tomlinson not if we have a Butler like DT
I like both a lot. Suh's nastyness and madness is great if he plays at our Team. He is a really smart dude. I don't know where I heard it but I think Suh did some investing with Buffet

A bit surprised nobody jumped in for edge convo.

Because it is a pretty boring conversation to be had if you look at it through a prism of how BB has usually handled the EDGE position.

Setting the edge and pushing things towards the MOF is the primary objective. Pressure can be schemed up. And you end up with mostly depth level signings for a unit that as a whole is uninspiring but extremely versatile.

Agree or disagree with it but that has been the approach for the most part unless an elite player falls into your arms. But paying market price for EDGE players seems to be a sucker's game if you look at the last decade of BB's track record.

Suh had to step up big time when Vea went down after game 5 and he did.

CB POOL

On paper this looks pretty much set presuming Pats will tender JC, but things can change re Gilmore and in that case Pats could be more serious players in this market FA as well as Draft.
