NEW ARTICLE: Former DE Ninkovich Describes How Patriots Leveraged Brady's Contract Against Players

For all the "The Patriots Don't Pay" or "Tom Got Screwed" crowd.

Quote from Ian's article per Nink

Some fans believe making the most money guarantees happiness and security.

It doesn't.

That's a very good quote because Nink arrived here as someone who might play special teams and had an 8 year career making good money. Now he's in the media with a viable follow on career.

Hell, even Heath Evans had a career at NFL Network. I wonder what team Rodney Harrison thinks ever made him relevant.

What are the circumstances that ever made Amendola relevant?

I wonder if some guys ever ask themselves if the crappy team is over-valuing them.

Rob Ninkovich's first contract negotiation with the Pats was in 2011. That year, Tom Brady was the 3rd highest paid player in the NFL. His next extension was in 2013. That year, Tom Brady was the 4th highest paid player in the NFL. Ninkovich's next extension was in 2015, when he was a 31 year old LB coming off a down year. That one year, Brady was the 14th highest paid QB in the league. So Ninkovich takes that one time when the Patriots were probably trying to sneakily tell him that his comp was off, and he latches onto Brady as the reason they weren't offering him top dollar for his services... Hmm... I guess if that works for him.

BTW - Brady jumped back up to the number 4 highest paid player in the NFL in 2016. You know who was number 1 that year? Cam Newton.

Tom Brady was well paid during his time in New England.

Yep. Nink arrived here with an equal chance at selling insurance for the rest of his life. He was cut from the PS at NO.

I've said this before but DA clearly wanted to get paid. At one point he wanted to win, so he CHOSE to take pay cuts. For him to complain in hindsight about it and give us working-class fans the woa-is-me line is embarrassing, pathetic, stupid and lacks self-awareness.

He is the classic spoiled-rotten jock who thinks they are more important than they are.

I'm glad Olivia put him in his place. Idiot.

Tell us something we dont know, how do you think they were so good for 20 years.

Getting paid after winning rings is great. Andruzzi did it several years ago. So did the lineman who went to Detroit after 2003 who used to be on ESPN.

The difference is Andruzzi never complained about it.

One thing I always found interesting was when NFL Network did the Football Life on Chuck Noll, Bradshaw was on there and he finally admitted he needed praise and affection sometimes. I wonder if guys like Amendola are just saying they needed nurturing and Belichick is not the group hug type.

It's not like Amendola had to go on patsfans and battle Andy Johnson or Ring 6 over several threads.

It almost makes one think that Patricia is back to dress up as a Teletubby during contract negotiations.

I often wonder how athletes like Amendola think fans will react will they go public with their salary complaints. A player signing a "cheap" one million dollar a year contract makes twenty times what the average guy in the U.S. earns. But I know there are low paid fanboys out there who do cry into their beer for these millionaires.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with getting paid. Absolutely nothing.

Part of me thinks Tom needed a little TLC but not in the way Bradshaw did. I do think Tom wanted a lot more of a role/say in the offense, players , etc and that was not something Bill was ready to embrace.

Fat Matt as a Teletubby is a gross visual. LOL.

Dear god
Everytime Mcafee opens his mouth it hurts our allure to free agents even more.
Nink giving us this insight is eye opening.
Danny A came out and seemed disgruntled but Nink coming out and saying this it really shows why players took lesser deals here.
I didn’t know that Tom would also effect that.
Bill is going to have a hard time getting people to buy into this when players now know A.
Tom regrets taking paycuts and was miserable at the end of this time here.
B. Danny A and Nink showed how shrewd Bill was in negotiations.
C. Belichick is the highest paid coach in sports.
D. So if your a young player and Bill is telling you to take 25 percent less to play in frigid New England where you will be yelled at by Bill and coached harder and work harder than you’ve ever worked with no current solution at QB.
Your phone rings while your speaking with Bill and a team like the Dolphins,Bucs, Rams, Colts, Cardinals call offering you the same or even a little bit more.
We are going to have to target B minus to C level players pay them close to B level and hope they can be coached up.
However Bill has shown he will pay for real game changers.
Gilmore
Wilfork
Revis
Moss
This will be a very interesting offseason.
What a horrible way to misconstrue ninkovichs comments.

The important part of that commentary was saying that what this team is about is that everyone takes a little bit less so we can have a better roster and win, and if you don’t want to be part of that, that’s fine too.

How people perceive that as negative is astonishing to me.

I bet the majority of posters have received job offers from other companies for more money then ultimately chose to stay with their current employer (after asking for a couple of extra bucks i'm sure) because of lifestyle, culture, company, work, career, etc.

For people not to correlate that to scenarios like DA's is confounding.

It's the same damn thing (kind of)

Amendola came in under a big contract and was a major disappointment. Of course he had to take paycuts because he wasnt worth the contract. Now in hindsight after knowing for most of the time he was in NE he wouldn’t get paid more anywhere else, after capitalizing on the championships to squeeze out a few more bucks, he is revising history.

It's been a really bad year for Belichick. Hopefully he realizes that because that's probably what it will take for anything to change. His contract situation makes him look like a gigantic hypocrite. Taking advantage of Brady's willingness to take less so more would be available to strengthen the roster otherwise while in reality he's shaking down the rest of team like a goombah. Now his former players are ratting him out. No days off yet he's sunbathing with Nike while his other b*tch is trolling on Instagram.

No question. It's almost like he's pulling this BS for posterity's sake because his ego was bruised from 2013-2017.

"See, I made big money at other places because they loved me. Bill never loved (sic paid) me. He used me to win Bla Bla Bla..."

You won't go away.

Bill could have a rude awakening this offseason as players like Thuney will not be taking "hometown discounts" because Bill doesn't have anything to sell. They are unfortunately trending in the wrong direction and don't have the most important position on the team filled - QB. Unless he pay market value as he did for Gilmore, Bill is not in a position to low ball big FA's.

Bill will have better luck going to the low-mid tier FA pool as he did in 2001 and beyond looking for guys who where buried on their former teams and getting a chance to start. Mike Vrabel, Rob Ninkovich are the best examples.

The NFL is a ruthless business. The most successful franchise is ruthless in it's negotiations with players? Doesn't seem like news to me. Anyone who's followed this team for the last 20 years can see they are brutal. They are ruthless in their pursuit of winning. They've bent the rules, broken them, and skirted them. I'm not surprised by anything they do in the process of fielding a winning team. We all were fine with it until they played hardball with Tom and, as a result, went 7-9. Now, we don't like the way they do business? I don't think we can have it both ways.
What rules did they break? Even "Spygate" they were following the letter of the law, if not the spirit.

Perhaps a sizable portion, but not the majority. I think you overestimate the economic position of the majority of posters.

Huh? I didn't state anything assuming wages and salaries of posters.

So in other words it is a season like every other since 2000. Cool.

Not at all actually. Bill is under more scrutiny this year than he was back then. The mishandling of Brady and the QB position overall has everyone analyzing his every move with a microscope. I think it is a bit over the top but such is the sports landscape these days. I do wonder if it will make Bill leave after this year.
