Why would we release Chung?
He is a leader on the field and the locker room a BB guy on the cap for pennies.

Chung is going to be 34 years old at the start of the season and took a year off. He was looked like age was starting to catch up to him when he last played. Expecting a 34 year old, in the box type safety to come back after a year off is a risky proposition.

My guess is he won't want to come back anyway. He has his rings. He probably doesn't want to come back to a rebuilding situation just to retire before the Pats can be a contender again (assuming they do). I expect Cannon and possibly Hightower to retire too, My guess is if you are willing to take the year off for COVID, you already are thinking of retirement.

Chung was declining in 2019. He took 2020 off and Phillips was a fine replacement. They drafted Dugger which really makes him expendable. We can't have Chung coming back and taking playing time away from Dugger. Those days need to end.

Theres a world where all 3 fit into a rotation, Phillips is an excellent special teamer as well. Having guys who can cover and play in the box is an asset, along with the leadership a Chung brings. I wouldnt be too eager to see him go, not for as low of a hit as he carries

I was on the Goodbye Chung bandwagon until you posted. A role player with leadership & culture is important in a mass changeover rebuild.

Let's see what happens when he has a better team starting this year. Bill's legacy is already dinged a bit from Spygate and from the Butler benching, two decisions that hurt the team in the short and the long term.

If the Pats collapse under Belichick without Brady? I'm looking at Shula's and Lombardi's records - they don't show any collapse. I don't think Bill would get a pass for that. Rings are also a team accomplishment, not a coach-only accomplishment.

And those undersized guys who play in the box just get beat up. Dugger was on the injury report with three separate issues last season, including the ankle that cost him two games. Philips broke his arm in 2019 with the Chargers and left this year's week 17 game with a hip issue that may have cost him time if the season hadn't been over. Chung missed three non-consecutive games with heel and chest injuries in 2019. It'd be nice to not be one injury away from Terrence Brooks playing every snap (week 8 against the Bills).
