Yep. When they've had it, they've spent it.That’s what they do when they have cap space. They just have rarely had it to use.

Why would we release Chung?
He is a leader on the field and the locker room a BB guy on the cap for pennies.
BB loves him some Pat Chung.
Chung is going to be 34 years old at the start of the season and took a year off. He was looked like age was starting to catch up to him when he last played. Expecting a 34 year old, in the box type safety to come back after a year off is a risky proposition.
My guess is he won't want to come back anyway. He has his rings. He probably doesn't want to come back to a rebuilding situation just to retire before the Pats can be a contender again (assuming they do). I expect Cannon and possibly Hightower to retire too, My guess is if you are willing to take the year off for COVID, you already are thinking of retirement.
Chung would be a CAP hit. Hightower and Cannon are CAP savings.
patsfans is treating 7-9 like it's (-2) and 18.
Maybe Curren should have looked at the dynamic and realize that when a team has more money with many teams in CAP hell and with the situation saying many players will be signing short term deals to get back on the bigger CAP plane in a few years that like maybe Belichick say this a few years back and planned accordingly.
Belichick is pushing 70. I don't think his "rebuild" timeline is the same as others.
If Chung is designated a post June 1 cut, he would save the Pats $1.8 million in 2021.
This right here. People saying Bill should take the long approach aren't taking into account he's pushing 70. He isn't going to wait 3 years find out a guy he drafted sucks and keep sucking.Chung would be a CAP hit. Hightower and Cannon are CAP savings.

If he stinks post Brady, that’s going to hurt his legacy.Belichick is unquestionably the GOAT. He has nothing to prove.

He's going to want to win now.
No it isn’t. He won, trying to belittle winning is stupid. Only an ignorant fool could watch how this team has operated and not know belichick is the GOAT. No one ever has won by themselves to diminish a coaches success because he has players and coached them is ridiculous. If he stinks post Brady, that’s going to hurt his legacy.

even more so when it’s the greatest run ever and lasted 20 years.
Plus he won’t stink. He will rebuild this team this year and be a contender. Last year his hands were tied. This year they are not.
Chung was declining in 2019. He took 2020 off and Phillips was a fine replacement. They drafted Dugger which really makes him expendable. We can't have Chung coming back and taking playing time away from Dugger. Those days need to end.Why would we release Chung?

Theres a world where all 3 fit into a rotation, Phillips is an excellent special teamer as well. Having guys who can cover and play in the box is an asset, along with the leadership a Chung brings. I wouldnt be too eager to see him go, not for as low of a hit as he carriesChung was declining in 2019. He took 2020 off and Phillips was a fine replacement. I was on the Goodbye Chung bandwagon until you posted. A role player with leadership & culture is important in a mass changeover rebuild.Theres a world where all 3 fit into a rotation, Phillips is an excellent special teamer as well. 2020 at least proved that Bill is human and isn't a winner when he has an awful QB and a weak team to work with. Just like any NFL coach, no matter how great they are. Let's see what happens when he has a better team starting this year. Bill's legacy is already dinged a bit from Spygate and from the Butler benching, two decisions that hurt the team in the short and the long term.If he stinks post Brady, that’s going to hurt his legacy.
I’d take 9 terrible years out of 10 if the 10th was a SB win.Beautiful post.
It brought a tear to my eye.
If I have to take a $28M dead cap hit every 20 years to win 17 Division titles, 9 AFC Conference titles and 6 Super Bowls.......I say right on.
Replaced by who with half as many rings?2020 at least proved that Bill is human and isn't a winner when he has an awful QB and a weak team to work with. I think a total collapse will knock him off the top as GOAT head coach.
If the Pats collapse under Belichick without Brady? I'm looking at Shula's and Lombardi's records - they don't show any collapse. I don't think Bill would get a pass for that. Rings are also a team accomplishment, not a coach-only accomplishment.Replaced by who with half as many rings?
And those undersized guys who play in the box just get beat up. Dugger was on the injury report with three separate issues last season, including the ankle that cost him two games. Philips broke his arm in 2019 with the Chargers and left this year's week 17 game with a hip issue that may have cost him time if the season hadn't been over. Chung missed three non-consecutive games with heel and chest injuries in 2019. It'd be nice to not be one injury away from Terrence Brooks playing every snap (week 8 against the Bills).Theres a world where all 3 fit into a rotation, Phillips is an excellent special teamer as well. How would you define "collapse"?If the Pats collapse under Belichick without Brady
Anything worse than this year for a sustained time. How would you define "collapse"?
