Stafford traded to Rams

Good on the Rams not wasting any more time and actively looking for ways to get out of mistakes.

Most the the trade package was so the Lions would take Goff in return and not for Stafford.

They are also a fascinating exercise in alternative roster building that is very top heavy and treats those late round picks with the value they actually have (ie. same as a second or third rounder) and as a means to obtain established top talent when opportunities arise.

Interesting team building philosophy.

I know the the Rams are paying the Lions to take Goff's bloated salary, but this is still a ridiculous deal for Matthew Stafford. This basically tells me that all the QBs potentially to be traded this offseason especially Deshaun Watson will likely be too costly to trade for.

Better to wait and see...i think it is better at this point probably to wait and see if one of the "other 3" will drop at 15...

What an awful deal for the Rams. Give up a younger QB for an older QB in a lateral move. I’m a UGA fan btw. Neither of these teams will do sh*t.

I HATE GEORGIA!

Sorry, but I was part of a group of parents who were told to scream that in 2001 by the president of Georgia Tech. It stuck with me.

Yes but they swung and missed on both the Gurley and Goff investments.

Agree though. They don't live with their mistakes.

This is exactly the reason people who are down on BB don’t get it. Almost every other franchise - even the Rams who have had recent success - are willing to roll the dice and risk the future for that ONE championship... the Rams would gladly go 7-9 after a SB win.
The Rams view Stafford as their starter for the next 5 years.

To understand why the Rams gave up so much, you have to understand what they get in getting out from under Goff's contract.

Obviously McVay has moved on from Goff, although Goff showed some toughness playing with a broken and then surgically repaired throwing thumb. If I'm Goff, you put out that kinda of effort for your team and what do you get in return? Shipped out to Detroit! Yeah thats the place California kids dream of going!

The Rams right now are a little over $32 million over the projected cap for 2021.

Goff's cap number in 2021 is a ridiculous $34,950,000. (or basically all the money the Rams are over the cap by).He also has $42 million in guaranteed salary in 2021 and 2022.

If they just cut him, the cap hit would escalate to an unmanageable $65,200,000. Which would put them $62 million OVER the cap!

But by trading him, they don't have to pay the $42 million in guaranteed money, they get a cap savings of $12.7 million. HOWEVER, Stafford is due a $10 million dollar roster bonus, not sure who is going to have to pay that. I would presume their is a restructure coming for Stafford and the Rams.

So at least one of those first round picks is for eating the Goff contract, I'm guessing having to delay that pick another year also added to that fact.

History says most teams don't go to 9 Superbowls in their 20 year run. So if a team has a shot to win one they should go all in.

If Brady declines or falls off a cliff in 2 years do you think the Bucs care as long as they won a superbowl?

Also people acting like stafford is ancient. Guy is 33. He's 5 years younger than MVP aaron rodgers and 10years younger than the guy in the super bowl

Then they are either (1) fools or (2) willing to be mediocre for years...

I don’t like Stafford as a « guy to get you over the hump » unless you have the 1980s SF vs Vanderbilt. That guy has lots of talent, but McVay will soon notice that he can say all the right things in the war piece, Stafford is still going to throw the bad INT in the worst spots.

Maybe. I guess we'll see what McVay can do with him but they are not going all in for one year. This was a long term move.

Rams probably wanted Goff’s salary off their books. That being said, two firsts for Stafford? Total win by the Lions.

If you are comparing Rodgers & Brady to this stiff, I think it’s misguided. My 13 year old is much younger than those two as well.

We agree re TB. That’s my point : teams will cash in to win once. Our fan base is so spoiled that they can’t accept one 7-9 season.

Rams have talent. No doubt. But Stafford won’t be the difference maker. I’m glad NE didn’t spend that much to get him.

No one has an issue with 7-9. It was expected. The issue is we have no Qb and this trade underscores how crazy the Qb market is.

Taking Goff and his massive contact is a big lose for Detroit. He's not a good Qb and he just went from McVay to Campbell.

No it's not. Detroit isn't competing for a superbowl next year. Nor the next. They're resetting.

And in 2 years they could get another pick for goff and make out like bandits and all they gave up in the end was a aging qb they already publically committed to moving on from.

You don't reset by taking on a mammoth contract for a Qb you don't want.

Hahahaha. Whoaaaaaa.

Perhaps you haven’t read much around here : over half the posters are asking for « GM BB’s » head on a platter and years of him « screwing us over » !

60% of posters have an issue with 7-9. I agree with you - most do not.

You do if it comes with two first rd picks, remember the picks are in the 2022 and 2023 draft. The Rams are in a win now mode, because after that they are going to have to pay for all those bloated salaries they have on the books right now (and the lack of draft picks for cheap talent).

Meanwhile the Lions can play Goff for the next two years, if he sucks, that just makes their own picks higher, but you figure they have five first round picks in the next three drafts (including the 7th pick this year) that they now don't have to use on a QB, and money says they trade that pick for another 2022 first rd pick to whoever wants to move up to take Mac Jones or Trey Lance.

Goff is not Brock Osweilder, he can play, maybe not a superstar, but maybe with a solid running game, he can be servicable.

I think this a great move by Detroit and one that will take a long time to pay out, but it could end up a Hershel Walker type haul for the Lions.

It's not because of the record but the lack of a QB succession plan that led to the record.

Would have been nice to get Stafford but I can’t imagine the Pats offered anything close to what the Rams did and I’m fine with that.

It gets you extra draft capital though. That's the point of the trade.

Say every other team is offering a 1st or a multitude of day 2 and 3 picks. Those teams have more leverage because they don't have an albatross of a contract in Goff that they need to move in order to get stafford. Other teams like the colts. Patriots, Denver or niners can just take on stafford's contract. (In niners case it's easy to cut Jimmy G)

Detroit KNEW if the Rams want stafford they need to move Goff. So they had them over a barrel and fleeced them for 2 first rounders and a 3rd.

I don't think this necessarily sets the QB market because you have to look at the trade as a whole and the situation the rams are in.
