I strongly disagree. We had a top defense in 2019. We have a top 10 defense in 2020. And, unless we trade away our assets, we will have a top 10 defense in 2021.
Maybe statistically we are top 10 this year but they don’t look like they can stop anyone. The Broncos marched up and down the field and dropped some balls in the red zone. The Seahawks threw all over us. The 49ers threw all over us and their third string RB ran for 100 yards on 12 carries. The only reason this defense isn’t giving up more points/yards is because the offense is so bad the other team is just looking to kill the clock late.
As for 2021 I think it’s safe to say Gilmore is gone and there are a ton of free agents that may get pricey to sign. I don’t see how this defense gets any better without some young guys really stepping up and a really good draft.

I mean... Its hard to keep being consistently great, especially when the O cant stay on the field for too long and cant score properly...

I think now, even at Defense, our biggest problem is on offense

I agree. I don’t think the defense is terrible by any means but I definitely don’t think they’re very good. I’d say they’re a middling defense that if they had any semblance of an offense on the other side could be good.

I also agree that our offense is the real problem. At this point we can’t really hang out hat on anything. It’s a struggle to complete a pass, the running game isn’t working consistently, the TE’s are non existent, and whomever is under center is a pick machine. Usually we spend September finding our way on offense and it starts to click in October. We aren’t those Patriots anymore and I’m starting to get resigned to the fact that this is what our offense is.

Im with you

This year has always been a prayer for our team. I havent completely given up this season, but next week is gonna be telling for sure.

2021 is going to be an interesting year tho, we've got fresh, good players for the D and, hopefully, some of these sophomores and rookies will improve too AND we have Cap Space, which is going to put in an incredible position for next year, when I suppose most team will be financially strangled

The thing is that continuation only works on winning teams, right? Im not in the "sell-out" department just yet, but lets see how i feel come season ends

I am really hoping they re-sign JC Jackson next year, I think he is turning into a great young corner. I am also hoping Wino continues to build on what he has done early this year (and gets out of the doghouse) and Uche and Duggar are given some more reps late this year to get their feet wet for next season. I honestly think a lot of how we look next year depends on some of our current rookies and second year guys because there are a ton veteran free agents on defense and I am not sure how many we retain.

Absolutely. If we trade Gilmore and eventually let Jackson walk, I will be extremely upset. Agreed on Wino, I wouldnt worry too much about him for now, He is a good rusher already and he'll become better against the run with experience and coaching... He's smart and savvy, those are huge qualities

To me, the most interesting part of 2021 will be the Free Agency. I have no idea how the NFL is going to look like for real after this season, i have no idea what teams will do, if the cap does decrease (part of me thinks they will retroactively change this, but I cant deny its a great opportunity for owners to curb the increase in Salaries going around the league)

Cam blows... what good are weapons if you can't get the ball to them... or worse get them decapitated throwing into double coverage behind the sticks on third down.

The Patriots don't have a QB, we'll never know just how good or bad the weapons are this season.

Cam does blow...But Chatham's such a tool...

LOL at people claiming Brady would have "Frozen Out" DK Metcalf. Brady likes good WRs, hates bad WRs. Metcalf is not only a good WR, he has talent to be a GREAT Wr. In training camp, he would have abused smaller DBs, got open, caught the ball, and brady would have loved him. Don't make this into rocket science. NOT ONE Wr that Brady has shunned has gone on to be NFL Quality anywhere else.

Lastly, if you think a Calvin Johnson Clone in DK Metcalf wouldn't fit "our system" then change our system!!!!
Metcalf is straight balling! In fact, most of the receivers the Pats could have drafted instead of Harry are balling. Go figure.

I hate the pick and don't think he has what it takes to be a star in NFL... maybe he can carve out a role as a #2/#3/#4 - who knows.

BUT I also remember looking him up after the draft and he had some pretty high grades almost across the board. Still think we shoulda picked up another with our #1 this year. So many trades it makes my head spin but we've gotten pretty much zero production out of Duggar/either the two TEs/ Uche or Jennings... Time will tell tho.

This is enormous

We drafted a 1st round WR who is not producing as we expected AND he had these levels of red flags in his game?

Seriously puts in question the scouting process, at least for WRs

We drafted a receiver, in the first round, whose major knock on his game was he couldn't get seperation... yeah not like that is important for a WR:rolleyes:

Kinda like drafting a QB, in the first round, whose major knock on his game was he couldn't throw the ball accurately *cough* Tim Tebow *cough*... not like that is important for a QB.

The argument that Brady doesn’t like young WR was always silly.

Brady’s legacy game, the game that solidified him as the undisputed GOAT was SB 51. And who did Brady trust the most in the 4th quarter of that career defining game? Malcolm Mitchell, a rookie.

Why? Because he was very dependable and knew exactly where he should be.

After 20 years of making scrubs like Chris Hogan look like playoff stars, it should’ve been very concerning that Brady seemingly gave up on Harry. If Brady doesn’t think you’re good enough, you most likely aren’t.

Perhaps the Patriots should try drafting the obvious Size/Speed/Production guys instead out smarting themselves by drafting guys that fits their system but lack ability.

Separation is part of the equation that answers: "How can this player help?"

Concussion history is part of an answer to "How can this player keep playing?"

I dont know, Im way more troubled by the medical history than by things that can be learn inside a practice field

A lot of times Belichick tries to draft the less obvious guy so that he looks smarter than everyone (i.e., "Look, Bill is drafting someone from Powdunk State. He must be really good! ).
