Extend Newton

I'm resolved that this is a one year thing.

Let's see how Cam holds up. He has 26 carries in two games.

That factors out to 20th in the league last year, more than any QB including Lamar, who posters screamed would never last the season.

Personally I don't think the running styles of Newton and Lamar can really be compared. My fear whenever I see Jackson cutting in and out of tackles is that at some point someone will get his knee while he is planting. Newton is much more static in his run and so far has been pretty good at protecting himself and not milking every yard outside the redzone.

But that is just my gut feeling when I see the two of them run. In reality my mind might just exaggerating the danger Lamar is in.

Cam looked better last night than Brady. Cam had a 34 year old Edelman and some JAG named Byrd and played great. What was Brady complaining about the past 2 years?
Harry also had a good game. The guy goes down way too easily but it’s also clear that he has great hands and can take a big hit and hold onto the ball. I love Brady, that much is clear. But it’s clearly a lower pressure situation with Cam. If Harry makes a few mistakes it’s not the end of his relationship with the QB.

All that being said Cam looks like he has some of the best pass protection in the league. Certainly wasn’t the case with Brady last season.

Hahaah, no.

Two terrible goal line reads at the end lost the game. Sure, the stat sheet says otherwise but those two plays were "gotta have 'em" and Cam didn't make the right read on either.

There's a lot of football left to play and there's no way Bill is going to extend Cam this early in the season.

Agree with all you say except:

Lamar is 23 and has avoided serious injury as far as I know.

Cam is 31 and has been hurt the past two years.

How would you feel about a 31 year old RB touching the ball as often as Cam?

If they keep this up, I don't think he lasts.

If we don’t sign Cam we are playing the draft game next year

Let's ask this:

What are the alternatives for 2021?

The first one is bringing back Cam at a premium. What are the costs of that? Probably losing depth in other areas, especially out very expensive secondary. If Cam costs us Gilmore, is it worth it? No idea, but possibly given that Cam is an elite dual threat QB

The second one is to go super duper cheap and roll with Stidham next year If Stidham is really good and works very hard he has a chance to be on the same tier as guys like Teddy Bridgewater and Gardner Minshew. I just don't see an elite arm there. Worse, I see no particular evidence of an elite mind either. I see a game manager at best, and a rookie game manager isn't going to win you very many Superbowls.

Then there's a FA class that's mostly guys like Jacoby Brissett, Phillip Rivers and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Brissett is interesting because he's worked here before, but he's a game manager too, just more experienced than Stidham. No interest at all in Phillip "4th quarter pick" Rivers. Hard pass on the known FAs.

The fact of the matter is that by any reasonable analysis Cam is one of the best risks to take going into 2021. If he gets hurt he gets hurt, risks don't always work, but it's always smart to take the smartest risk and get ahead of potential massive roster problems if you can.

Cam is 31 and has been hurt the past two years.

And both of those injuries happened to him in the pocket where he had less control over the entire situation. I feel like we are not giving enough credit to how much of injuries is just randomness. It is often not the intensity of the hit that is devastating but your body being in a vulnerable position.

So far I haven't seen many hits that Cam took where he wasn't in control. That doesn't mean it won't happen but I'd rather have him get tackled in a controlled manner while he is running then watching an edge rusher dive at his feet or smack him from the blindsight.

How would you feel about a 31 year old RB touching the ball as often as Cam?

I don't think this comparison is particularly fitting. How often is Cam running straight power between tackles ?

I'm not blaming the injuries on running. Cam has certainly held up well for his style.

It's age and accumulated wear/tear. If he gets this many touches, it becomes statistical more than his taking risks.

Honestly, the only thing that might make Cam even want to leave is the cold weather that’s coming. Other than that, he would be crazy to leave for another situation.

4/120M is fair, if he continues playing well. And he will let the team structure it any way they want. The Pats gave him a chance when the rest of the NFL discarded him.He will never forget that. Wait until around Thanksgiving, then start talking.

Newton is not going to sign any contract in-season. If he continues to play this well, he will hit FA and Bill will actually have to pay him top dollar.
Disagree my dude

I think Newton's smart enough to understand that Coaching like we have is not Dima a Dozen. Even him has to be surprised about how much he is producing. Including the fact that he is a mobile QB (so bad coaches will lead to more hits), durability issues, age issues, previous lack of interest in FA and, pehaps more importantly: The fact that we are contenders already, even in "rebuild" mode, is something to behold.

A team that needs a QB is normally a team in shambles. Newtons been part of some ****ty things and he never won a SB. He is already HoF worthy, but where does he have the best chance to become a 1st ballot undispusted?

Exactly. He loves Belichick and the opportunity given to him. I think he stays here long-term and would be willing to take a bit of a discount.

I hope you are right. But this partnership in my view is the same as when we got Revis on the cheap. It is a one year deal on the cheap for us and a chance for Newton to perform and get one more big pay day. The only way it happens is if Bill is willing to fork over a top 10 QB contract to him. I don't think Bill will. I hope I am wrong as at some point we have to actually pay a QB as Bill is never getting another elite QB like Brady to play on the cheap.

Cam’s a 30 year old QB. He really should have 3 years left even as a running QB. The guys from 2004 are just starting to hit the end of the rope. Revis was a CB at an age when they usually hit the end.

Comparison wise, if Cam was Brady, last year was his 2008 injury year

Newton showed some pretty good pocket sense last night.......he can still be quite effective if he runs less

I'd offer him the contract Brady refused modified to be full of reasonable incentives and whatnot to protect a bit against injury.

So around 23-26M.

In my opinion, that’s dreaming. If he continues to play like this he will ask for at least Dak money. In the 30-35M.

lol........without Newton, this game is a blowout even if the previous QB was still here.....I agree Newton will not be extended, but your point is ridiculous

interesting that (even though it's only 2 games) Newton's QBR is 10 points higher than before and Brady's is 10 points lower
