I wonder if it wasn't a coincidence they let it be known they signed Cam the day the punishment for the Bengals thing dropped.

If he can stay healthy and play like 2018, this could get really interesting. He is still young for a QB, and I suspect, very motivated.

The first time he does that stupid Superman pose, I am going to have to find a way to kick myself in the balls for being happy. But I will be happy.

If I cheered for Chris Nilan once, I can certainly get behind Cam.
Nilan lived next door to me one semester during my college days. Nice guy when not on the ice.

An Open Letter to Cam Newton

June 29, 2020

Dear Cam,

Welcome to "Beantown". This is home to many past sports heroes like Bill Russell, Fred Lynn, Mo Vaughn, Paul Pierce, and Troy Brown.

First, let me apologize for many of the negative things that have transpired in the past with great men like Adam Jones, and Torii Hunter. I speak on behalf of white people in Patriots Nation in personally apologizing for being a part of the great problem, and we will all strive to do better at being the change we wish to see in the world.

I hope that you will find your stay with the New England Patriots to be pleasant, and most importantly, know that we root for our players through thick and thin. Whether or not you score touchdowns or win games, know that you are appreciated.

Patriots Nation is as diverse as it gets; we have fans all over the world in various countries like Africa, Nigeria, and the great People's Republic of Cuba.

For now, though, it's time to dance!!! I am greatly looking forward to doing the endzone wiggle when you score your first touchdown (if you do - if you don't, it's okay because you are always welcome in New England no matter what.)

With Great Sincerity,
Patriots Nation!!!

Bill went into the season drafting Harry, with Gordon, Edelman. Then he later signed Sanu and Brown.

Harry was IR’d rookie year and missed crucial development time.

Gordon was hurt, cut and suspended

Brown went crazy and is still not signed.

Edelman got injured and required surgery.

Sanu came to a new team and almost got an injury he required surgery for.

This idea they Belichick is at fault for 2018 is kinda silly. A bunch of unfortunate **** happened to what looked like one of the best WR’s corps in the league in the first few weeks.

Then in 2019 a run in the draft at WR happened right before the Pats and the last good one was taken a pick before them. Then we got two of the higher quality TE’s in the draft. We were strapped for cap and couldn’t make many moves in free agency.

Again given the situation the biggest change is Belichick maybe trades up for a WR

The idea that Bill isn't at fault for the way the offense looked last year is asinine. He went into the year whiffing multiple times at a decent swing tackle which cost us when we ended up with a turnstile at left tackle. He relied on Josh Gordon not to be Josh Gordon and he ended up fizzling out. He overpaid for a receiver who looked like he couldn't catch a cold with Sanu. The greatest wide receiver of his generation fell into Bill's lap but was a head case and the owner didn't want to weather the storm. Bill knew AB was a gamble that may not pay off and it sure didn't. As for Harry, Bill had his choice at any receiver aside from Marquise Brown and came out with the worst performer out of the early drafted receiver group. Pretty much every receiver drafted in the second round easily outperformed Harry even just by the eyeball test. That put everything on our 33 year old slot receiver who got the crap kicked out of him and as far as I am concerned had one of the gutsiest seasons I have seen from any Patriot ever.

Don't confuse the issue with facts. Let them have their rant.

I'll bet anything that Newton's $7.5m is almost entirely non guaranteed, not likely to be earned incentives that don't hit the cap unless he turns into a Pro Bowler again, at which point they hit the 2021 cap which will be much larger than this year's.

It's a zero risk, high upside move.

I hate to say it, I really do, but the current year is not 2019.

Newton is NOT an accurate passer. 1 season in his career did he reach a 66% completion percentage. Bradys baseline was a consistent 66% completion range which is why Brady was so successful in todays passing NFL. Newton likes the INTs and sacks.

Cam Newton Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

At Newtons age he does not need to be running around playing Lamar Jackson. Newton will be forced to stay in the pocket and pass which almost always never works out because he is used to running when the walls close in.
We’ll see what happens..

Im not a fan of his after last season, really think hes done as a starter. But i still like the signing. If a backup im sure he will not see anything near 7.5 mill, and for a cheap salary id rather have him than hoyer filling in for a few games if needed.

If somehow he turns into a legit starter and does well enough to earn 7.5 mill, that would be an incredible bargain for an effective starting qb, maybe 1/3 of what most make. Then we may very well get a nice comp pick next year.

Newton is virtually unstoppable on third and short. He just takes it in shotgun and picks a hole. You should remember that Newton is bigger physically than Dont'a.

With a good defense and a great running game, the Pats should have a good season.

Newton has nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

He played 2 games last season.... and the prior season he had his sending best season

BB is not infallible.

Just look at last seasons WR and TE corp. The 2018 group was subpar and was not fixed in the 2019 offseason. Brady had nobody.
He’s not; but this a pretty good signing.

About a day late, apologize if someone mentioned this but...

I hope we teach this guy how to go after a fumble.

I wonder if it wasn't a coincidence they let it be known they signed Cam the day the punishment for the Bengals thing dropped.

Or they were waiting to see what the punishment was before signing Cam.

Any kids in the front row of the end zones may end up getting a pretty cool souvenir from Newton...oh wait...

Brady's baseline was more like 61-62% completion percentage, especially early on in his career and again in 2019. On the other hand, Newton's CEILING is about 60%. So if Newton has a good year he's basically Brady in a bad year, which is not bad at all TBH.

Brady has a career completion percentage of 63.8% against cam’s 59.6%.

The problem i have with Cam is that he is good only with his legs. He never was a good passer. His stat lines prove it. He only threw more than 4000 yards once. He has an average QBR of 57.7 for his career compare to Brady’s average QBR of 73.3.

Can he still run? At this stage of his career, i will say no and without his legs he his useless.

Or they were waiting to see what the punishment was before signing Cam.

To me it looks like the other way around. The league had their punishment determined for a while and used the Newton signing which expectedly created some headlines to dump the punishment. They know its ******** but it will get drowned out by Cam Newton related articles.

Cam is only 31, if he is healthy he should still have plenty left in the tank. We are talking about a former MVP who has played some very good football as recently as 2018. Stidham would have to be pretty good and Cam pretty bad to land the starting spot.

I think Cam is here with the expectation to be the starter and Stidham sits back another year.
Nobody will be given anything. Nobody knows how healthy Cam is. Stidham could be pretty good. Cam without his wheels might be as good as Cassel or Brissett. I think in 2018 Norv Turner showed Cam could be more of a game manager and play the check down game. He has a big arm but has never been terribly accurate, that won't change at his age.
