SI: Patriots Appear to be Building an RPO-Proof Defense

That’s awesome. The Eagles Super Bowl 52 chances just took a big hit.

I just came across the article as well. BB is building something all right. We shall see.

Bill has had a love affair with safety/LB hybrids for years now. They haven’t always panned out but I believe in Dugger and Phillips looks good too. He may faint on the field if he manages to get two on the field at once (three, even, if you want to count Chung).

Also I borderline consider Gilmore a linebacker because I’ve seen him make a ton of incredible solo tackles on guys bigger than him that were not at all his assignment.

I was rip roaring mad watching day 2 of the draft unfold until I realized the first 3 selections were taken to build a D to slow down the Chiefs, Ravens and Texans. Then, they drafted two TEs I liked addressing their biggest offensive need (not counting the great unknown at QB) and the rest of the draft was just gravy to me.

I’m no blind “in Bill I trust” guy. This draft along with the signings of Phillips and Beau Allen are an attempt to upgrade the Pats run defense to go along with their still, hopefully, stellar pass defense. The plan makes sense, and, with luck, the players Belichick added will be good enough to make the plan work.

Great post, good wasted time of my quarantine, i approve

Liked their bottom line:
He is prepping New England's defense to dominate some of the AFC's strongest offenses as the six-time Super Bowl champions try to maintain their high level of success into a third decade.
(Emphasis added)

He is just one way to beef up the Patriots' run defense while not sacrificing anything in pass coverage.

Again, that safety/linebacker hybrid can help provide speed on the edge, making tackles in space, while at the same time not sacrificing anything in the passing game.

Abilities like the above are essential impossibilities for all but the most freakish of the already freakish athletes. And it's lines like those which make this sort of article not worth reading.

Chung, for example, cannot do that.

Who can?

Patrick Chung has won 3 Superbowls by the way

.

Patrick Chung doesn't do up-downs. He pushes the Earth the other direction. Chuck Norris checks under the bed at night for Patrick Chung. And he's there. Superman wears Patrick Chung pajamas. Evolution's a myth. There are just species Patrick Chung permits to live.

PS... there have been lots of stories about the newly "freed" Tom Brady, but this year's amicable-enough divorce frees Bill Belichick too. He's been in a gilded cage for 20 years, always able to fully own the team... because TFB lets him. That's not a dis, that just is. Brady didn't cross him or challenge him... but it's not like BB could say "you know what? This year we're going to have a strong ground game and emphasize defense over offense." He began to move that direction, but you saw how many flyers he took trying to turn up new toys for TFB last year (and then by trying to keep trading up + some bad luck, ended up out of ammo entirely at WR.)

Any hope for Jojuan Williams in this role?

Chung is/was fine in coverage 15yds and in. You'd be best served not posting about anything football-related

They emphasized D over O last year.

So, basically, BB will find a new way to make Harbaugh cry. Nice!

Chung has a suspension on his horizon, doesn't he?

With Philips and Dugger on board would the Pats attempt to move on from Chungs higher price tag?
