I don't think BB is going to invest draft capital any earlier than the 4th round at the QB position. Maybe then they'll grab someone for the camp arm / scouting team / practice squad / emergency backup role.

I think he's OK with using this year to see if Stidham can do it or not, and if not, they'll have cap space and draft capital to try to get someone else.

It's pretty clear to me that BB, Ernie, et al are OK with this being a rebuilding year, and next year too if need be.
I think there is a very valid argument that , outside of a select few, at the QB position it’s not who you draft but how you coach and is doing the coaching of whoever you draft that is more important.
Never done the research but I would be shocked if such research didn’t show that quality of coaching (hc, oc) is a better predictor of success than draft a lot.
We’ve seen many highly drafted, highly touted QBs stunk up the joint, but I don’t see a strong history of OC/HC that do a good job developing QBs struggle with their picks.

Not sure Rosen will be a good player, but what I do know is that he’s never been put in a position to succeed. Only in a position to fail

Meh, Curran (or "Prentice McCray" as he was known here ...) lost his fastball IMHO a couple of years ago. This column doesn't reflect any more insight than Prentice could glean from this board ...
Yep not saying he's very insightful, just thought his Nantucket jibe was pretty good, and I do more or less agree with his take on the Tom vs Bill saga, his rationale fits the facts pretty well.

So, who covering the Pats has a fastball?

Can honestly say there's no one I go out of my way to read.

I'd rather take a shot on Hurts or Anthony Gordon later on. Next year is really the year to grab a QB if Stidham stinks.

If Stidham isn't a good quarterback, I don't want to wait and be forced to start a rookie next year.

I don't understand the idea of drafting a quarterback to give Stidham the "desired competition." If Stidham needs a rookie challenger to light a fire under his butt, he doesn't deserve to be on the New England roster.

We need competition for Stidham because he might not be any good.

The competition might not be any good, and crucially, whoever is picked is unlikely to have the training camp and preseason time to show what he can do. People on this site who follow the college game say that next year's draft has a strong crop of quarterbacks. If Stidham fails, the Pats will have a losing record and an opportunity to pick a QB rated higher than anyone they could get this year at this point in the draft.

What’s the harm in taking one this year and one next? We should probably take one every year until we get someone we can be confident will be a franchise QB.

"Desired competition" is a bad way to put it. IMO, the way BB looks at it, he wants to throw in as many as he can afford to, as far as roster management, and see who swims the best.

I'm fine with taking a quarterback in the sixth or seventh round, but not in the second or third. As a matter of fact, as a late round pick I sort of like Ben DiNucci, who has quarterbacked a very successful James Madison team down here in Virginia.

It’s more hedging bets. Stidham was a fourth round pick and Bill had to know Tom leaving was a possibility. If he felt strongly that stidham was cant miss, he’d have picked him higher than the fourth. The back up QB is also an older journeyman on a one year contract.

This from the guy posting "WOAT" in an attempt to snarkily disparage and/or humiliate those with whom he disagrees

Just you. And you already provided the meme, so consider it reused.

BB's current opinion of Stidham is surely based almost entirely on what he's seen of him in preseason and in practices. I'm sure he cares not at all what round he drafted him in. It's been reported that based on Stidham's preseason and Belichicks noises about him, he would have gone in the lower half of the first round if he were re-drafted with this year's class. Hence the lack of interest in Love et al.

I have seen quite a bit of Hurts and Fromm. Seen them play more than Stidham. But just off of memory Stidham's Arm talent is better than both those guys in my opinion in terms of arm strength/accuracy

So what is your solution? Start a rookie this year? Give me your alternative.

Daniel Jeremiah saw all of last year's draft QBs participate in some event last year where they were all throwing around in their shorts and sneakers. He said just looking at all of them, including Kyler Murray, Tua, Lock, and a bunch of other QBs, that Stidham had the best arm of everyone.

Jeremiah: Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham throws the best ball of anybody in draft
