DRAFT Patriots OFFICIAL Draft Day thread - Night 1

I hope Stidham is the REAL deal.....but we will find out although last night was a vote of confidence....
I don't think BB is going to invest draft capital any earlier than the 4th round at the QB position. Maybe then they'll grab someone for the camp arm / scouting team / practice squad / emergency backup role.

I think he's OK with using this year to see if Stidham can do it or not, and if not, they'll have cap space and draft capital to try to get someone else.

It's pretty clear to me that BB, Ernie, et al are OK with this being a rebuilding year, and next year too if need be.

I've said It ad nauseum but I really like Cole Mcdonald

Tonight will be exciting and interesting. Having 5 picks tonight and many in Day 3 I think we will be wheeling and dealing again. Moving up, down or in to next year are all on the table.

Makes watching interesting because that icon can quickly turn to the Patriot symbol or vice versa. We can also roll the dice on a Boom or Bust prospect with any of those picks.

I’m intrigued by idea of trading Thuney to Miami for Rosen and a 3rd (#70).

With 5 picks in the top 100, we’re well positioned to address a number of needs. I like idea of trading down in 1st rd (always have) but the key is picking the right guy.

Rosen?

Athletic ability big arm leader well liked

After his combine I worry about the accuracy on some of his throws. Maybe take a flyer in the 7th or UDFA, not sure on going any higher.

Rounds 2-3, Teams with most picks:

1. New England Patriots (5 selections)
2. Baltimore Ravens (4 selections)
2. Carolina Panthers (4 selections)
2. Denver Broncos (4 selections)
5. Eight teams (3 selections)
13. Fifteen teams (2 selections)
28. Three teams (1 selection)
30. Two teams ( o selections)

Agree 6th or 7th but hes not much different than Hurts to me

How much do you like him? If it’s as much as Stidham last year than I’m going to have to put you on ignore the rest of the draft. Don’t think I can handle another weekend of you lobbying for another Qb every other post.

I don't Ike him as much as a J Stiddy

Would certainly trade with the Saints at 37 for #88 and a 1st next year. Tough division and Brees is fading, there's a chance the wheels come off.

In terms of value to teams, a low first next year is similar in value to a high second this year....its a "bird in the hand" thing (I have heard several NFL GMs state this in overviews over the years). The likelihood that the Saints will implode next year is low. Given that the Pats already punted out of rd 1, seems unlikely that they would trade away 37, but maybe BB will prove me wrong.

I’m nervous that we take an Eason or Fromm in the 3rd. Hope I’m wrong.

I'd rather take a shot on Hurts or Anthony Gordon later on. Next year is really the year to grab a QB if Stidham stinks.

I think there is a very valid argument that , outside of a select few, at the QB position it’s not who you draft but how you coach and is doing the coaching of whoever you draft that is more important.
Never done the research but I would be shocked if such research didn’t show that quality of coaching (hc, oc) is a better predictor of success than draft a lot.
We’ve seen many highly drafted, highly touted QBs stunk up the joint, but I don’t see a strong history of OC/HC that do a good job developing QBs struggle with their picks.
