as this thread has developed over the past week, the main conclusion I draw at this point is...FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT

I agree, there was an accidental outbreak that occurred in California (1995) that Dr. Keough and Dr. Daniels were able to fortunately stop.

What did Dr. Keough do besides accidentally infect herself? If anything Major Salt deserves the credit. I mean he flew the copter, shot down the host monkey and with the help of Daniels was able to save a town from being wiped out.

By the way on the arguments on numbers:

The comical thing is that he wanted to NOT test people because then the markets would be spooked. I'm sorry, that is laugh-until-you-cry tragicomical.

Because the only way you contain is to test aggressively as soon as possible, and isolate EVERYBODY who knows ANYBODY who is positive. We lost contain. We just blew it off. You know why? Because oh no, we might have some selling on wall street. Farkin' genius.

Now the easily led ruminants are actually believing that "he stopped it! He closed the border!"

He did a sloppy job of a nationalist response AFTER there were confirmed cases in Seattle, cases that had already blossomed into one node of infection. And the brilliant theory that the virus needed to be brought in by someone from China doesn't seem to have stopped all travel into NY..,. it just wasnt travel from China. This virus is not an agent of another nation. It's code that rewrites your ****ing DNA so you make more of it. Not for China. For its own replication, because its a virus and we're its hosts. Humans. Not Chinese or Americans or White People or Asians, FREAKING HUMANS.

Even now, the right is still obsessed with defending this seriously idiotic theory that viruses play "RISK." They don't. That's why this virus is in 140 countries, not just ours. The countries that win containment win against the virus, eventually. We did not. The Brits went all Boris Johnson and decided to just GET the virus for a long time, similarly wasting time in the beginning.

But I meant to post a simple point on the numbers: You only know how many have it by testing, and testing a LOT -- then extrapolating from the test.

We might very well GET that 40-70% infection, that makes perfect sense. 80% will have mild symptoms or be asymptomatic, among those testing positive. 20% will be severe cases. Some single digit percentage will die. If you're very sick, the way you don't die is be on a ventilator. If you have more people than ventilators and nobody else has a ventilator they much more likely die.

So you might "only" get 1% death rate in, say, 170 million people. That's "only" 1.7 million dead.

Or it might be lower. The point is, the same thing applies to, say, seasonal flu, which we say is .1% fatal. Well, maybe that's .01% fatal counting people you don't ever know have it. Same concept.

Among the positives, when you test more, the death rate does look lower. This is not, as one savant here stated, the disease becoming milder. It is adding to the denominator.

If it's 1% fatal, that means that it does the damage of 10 flu season in 1 season, and the way to best survive it is a relatively scarce medical resource (vents.) That's what we've got thus far. Hence, "flattening the curve." Ventilators are available for more people in a given time period if people socially distance.

And yes, you brilliant deniers who went around carping "it's not that bad, I'm going to a movie and a crowded bar" or whatever, you're killing grandma lol what can I say. You want this spreading slow - because it IS going to spread, it's a matter of fast or slow. If it's fast, people are out of options and die.

"The latest democrat hoax"... how many people believed that? Well hell they were at a rally when it was well known that the right move was isolation, right? As was POTUS. Sometimes your irresponsibility kills people. Hey, maybe Stalin didnt KNOW that directing the Great Soviet Famine against Ukraine would kill people, and make the famine worse in toto... maybe he just had quaint beliefs that maybe the peasants really WERE hoarding the food... or maybe he thought the famine would be over, it would "be like a miracle."

Still goes down in history as a man-made famine.

We need to pull all manufacturing from China
Would be exactly the wrong thing to do at this point don't you think? The one country that has got it under control and bringing its factories back on line again?

Stalin was a psycopath.

Stalin was a psycopath.

Ohhhhh now now, Viper, you know that you and I can't assign him a psychological diagnosis unless we've personally examined him.

That's the standard I keep hearing about :D

You won't get so much as fracking TYLENOL if we keep antagonizing China. They make the pharmaceuticals we take. They also make the n-95 masks in bulk.

I'm rattled bc acetamenaphin is actually great stuff, & the Mrs. uses that as her pain control standby... they make 70% of it. They had a dip in production last summer and people were scrambling trying to get their hands on it... thank goodness it was a temporary situation.

Yeah I'm thinking worldwide medical threats arent the thing we want to start cold warring about.

The moves by Trump to move manufacturing from China to America is looking better all the time. We don't make any ventilators in the US currently. The Chicoms are threatening to stop imports of pharmaceuticals to the US to punish us.

If they are to be $$ for companies there should be strings attached about bringing many jobs and manufacturing back to the USA. So we will be in a better position to respond to the next epidemic.

How knowledgeable are you about the inputs, including labor costs, in the pharma industry? How did China get so much of the Pharma market? Is it cheaper to get pharmaceuticals from there? How much cheaper, I wonder?

To make your response germane to this thread: What do you know about ramp-up time for say, the 70% of acetaminophen that currently comes from China? Just one drug. Do you know? I don't. We can walk through what it would take.

My point is that we are in the midst of a crisis already. Is it a good idea, or a bad idea, to add on another crisis on top of it, in the form of preventable shortages?

The Chinese were responding to asinine bluster from our POTUS about how they have to be "held accountable" for being the first people to catch a disease.

Have we faced any international tribunals for the 1918 flu? Lots of theories about where it started, with us being pretty much the leading candidate. (But slick move labeling it "Spanish" flu.)

The country of origin isn't the point with pandemics. Again, diseases go after us as a species not a nationality. And from the global map of this one you can pretty much see that nobody was able to keep coronavirus "out." It's a matter of how well you contain.

Needing to crash, good to see you again, 13.

Sorry, too knee-jerky. 1) Yes, it is good to have suppliers other than China. (2) What's it take to do pharma at home? I dont have the stats. (3) I'm not so worried that China won't sell us these drugs, though if you yank their chain enough, who knows. The nightmare scenario is if they can't.

okay, now going to bed.

I heard that 18 percent of corona infections are asymptomatic. That’s really scary.

The Chinese are THE Country responsible for the outbreak going World wide. The reacted to this as the Soviet Union reacted to Chernobyl. The denied to virus for almost a month, then 5 million people went from Wuhan all over China for the Chinese New Year. People traveled from overseas to China for this event then went back overseas.

Do you know that ~300,000 Chinese are working in .. Northern Italy.

Or you could observe his behavior and the results of his dictatorship.
