Hightower's and Bentley plus draft should be fine for LB. Though patriots do need an athletic Lb who can cover. Unless they plan to use jujuan William's in that role
So, your suggestion is that increasing Bentley's reps will make up for not having Collins, Van Noy, Roberts and Calhoun? And that Fat Thor , Guy and Butler are all that we need at DT?

How many rookie contributors are you counting on? I am fine with using 2 picks in the first 3 rounds. I'm just not sure that this is enough, or that the players that Belichick wants will be there.

I suspect we might see more of a 4-3.

Harmon upgrade. ;). Last safety to come from chargers... Hmmmm .. Rodney Harrison. Cool:cool:

Aw man, you must have missed the half of this thread about Steve Gregory.

Came back from a broken arm, in week 2, last year.

Anthony Lynn labeled his versatility “huge,” likened his presence to being “a coach on the field” and called him “the captain of that secondary.”

thankgod, we’ve been missing this on the team ever since Ras I Dowling left us.

Not sure what point you're making here. This guy came back from an injury, something Dowling could never imagine.

A lot of people are forgetting about Winovich. He had a specialized role last year, but seems like a hard worker, a good kid, and most importantly was productive for a rookie in the role he was given. He's not a run stuffing middle LB type, but I could absolutely see his role increase this year.

I don't think we're forgetting about him. He's pretty strictly an edge rusher. Even if his role increases, it has nothing to do with the off ball linebacker conversation.

Analysis: What signing safety Adrian Phillips means for the Patriots - Pats Pulpit

Phillips adds versatility and experience to New England’s secondary...

Phillips does not just help the Patriots improve their depth and possible move some pieces around in the defensive backfield, he also could have a big impact himself on the way the team plays defense. After all, he adds considerable versatility and experience in numerous spots to the safety position. As can be seen when looking at his alignment distribution from just the 2019 season alone, the Chargers used him all over the field (via Pro Football Focus):

Box safety: 122 snaps

Slot cornerback: 72 snaps

Free safety: 60 snaps

Defensive line: 18 snaps

Perimeter cornerback: 9 snaps

Wino's sideline-to-sideline pursuit jumped off the screen last year.

Problem is he didn't do it much as he doesn't have the experience to recognize run/pass, PA, coverages etc.

I'm willing to bet by Halloween (hopefully) hes a 3-down player.

I love this kid.

I'd love it if they signed Vitale now.

Certainly possible. I see a little more potential in the kid, but it's all conjecture at this point. I remember a lot of people down on Hightower early on, saying he was too slow to be a three down LB, and while you'd never want him covering speedy backs 1 on 1 (not many LB if any that you would), he turned into a vital every down piece on three SB teams. Winovich's ceiling is definitely up for debate, but I don't like declaring that players "can't" do X Y or Z, unless it's something obvious (example: I'm fine saying that Marcus Cannon could never play WR :D )

I wouldn't rule out Winovich showing versatility beyond what he's already shown, but all I'm saying is there isn't *that* much precedent for it actually happening (Bruschi and Dane Fletcher, but they made the switch as soon as they went pro), nor any indication from the team/media/player that he could line up off the ball.

Oops .. forgot him

We all did...personally I think he's being overrated in this thread. Our defense was trash-to-average during his stint here and immediately improved when we replaced him with Chung 2.0.

...so Philips has a stronger resemblance to Harrison.. haha:cool:

So by my quick mental calculations, that's a max value of $7.5M over 2 years. Why not just include that in the tweet since most of us want to know the total?
