I think what us lay people are missing is that the epidemiologists are concerned about how fast this thing spreads. The best way to combat that is to minimize human interactions.
Yup.. SARS infected 50 million people, and that wasn't even infectious until about 4 days AFTER you had started showing significant symptoms. It also wasn't a very lethal virus generally speaking, but it easily could have been
COVID-19 is infectious about 4 days BEFORE you ever show any symptoms. Combine that with the fact that governments knew about this before they ever really made much public, and how little testing we're actually doing, this is just the beginning.. its only going to get a lot worse before it gets better
People downplaying the significance of this are likely going to be the same people who help perpetuate the spread of it by being irresponsible
