BGC 2020 TE/PTP Thread

Albert O probably secured a Day 2 draft position today with his 40-yards time. He does have good hands, even though his route-running and blocking is inconsistent, and that could be enough if a team can envision a way to use him effectively with their offense.

Cole Kmet did good overall today, also, especially at his weight. Harrison Bryant didn't test high athletically but did well in the field drills which matches what he displayed on his tape. Hunter Bryant did well in the field too. Devin Asiasi still looks like an intriguing inline prospect who I hope will be there in the 3/4 round.

C.J. O'Grady also didn't test well athletically today. However, he did pretty well in the field drills, just as he did on his tape. He could be worth a flyer in the later rounds if his off the fields issues checkout and are okay.

Some of the top TEs don't test well athletically in individual components (<4.6 40-yds dash, vertical/broad jump or 3-cone) when you look at their draft profile but are well-rounded football players and very productive in the league.

*C.J. O'Grady did test okay in the vertical/broad jump and not too bad in the 3-cone.

*Dalton Keene and Josiah Deguara tested well athletically overall and probably increased their draft stock.

Josiah Deguara is being pretty underrated with how well he looks on film.
Albert O & his height/weight/speed/length should indeed be a Day 2 (probably 3rd round) prospect now...Kmet has become a borderline 1st-rounder that should Not be considered a Reach at 23...Harrison Bryant disappointed, both physically & athletically, and is now firmly behind Kmet if not Trautman also...Asiasi looked like a Day 3 guy all the way, firmly behind Josiah Deguara, who probably improved his stock more than any other TE at the combine.

Good evaluations Captain and I don't have any major disagreements with you.

The combine didn't change my evaluations of the TEs I watched before on tape, especially Harrison Bryant.

Asiasi actually still appeared very fluid in the field drills and had more production than Kmet in college. While Kmet might get drafted higher, Asasi could represent good value if he drops to the fourth round.

As I noted many TEs draft profiles aren't that athletic who tested well with individual traits but are well-rounded football players whose football traits (catching/route-running) have translated into more receiving production than those who were more athletic at the combine.

Yeah Asiasi might be a Day 3 guy, but he's an Early Day 3 guy who should still be available with our 4th-rounder but definitely not with any of our 6ths...
Another guy who also impressed is Portland State's Charlie Taumoepeau; I don't believe that, because of his height, he's an on-line NFL TE 1/2 as much as he's an off-line TE3/FB, but his hand/length are more than adequate...
Charlie T, Asiasi & Josiah Deguara (& Thad Moss, depending on medicals) could all be in play when the next wave of TEs begins during Day 3/Round 4...

The kid from Portland state has definitely intrigued me. Time to hit the tape to see what he is all about.

2020 NFL Scouting Combine winners/losers: TEs

Harrison Bryant, TE, Florida Atlantic

Bryant not only ran well (4.73 40), but he was the most consistently smooth mover during the various position drills, just besting Dayton's Adam Trautman (4.80 40, 6.78 three-cone) for this spot. He adjusted to throws all around him, snatching the ball with strong hands, while also moving quickly around cones with impressive footwork. Bryant also was one of the few tight ends to push the blocking sled, staying low and moving his feet while others pushed the sled upward and failed to generate movement.

Jared Pinkney, TE, Vanderbilt

Pinkney put himself on NFL scouts' radars as a junior, but he saw his production drop in 2019. A strong combine may have pushed him into the top-150 conversation, but his workout did not go as well as planned. It started with the slowest 40-yard dash among the tight ends (4.96 seconds). Stiff movement and his struggles catching passes during drills also did not help his cause.

Mitchell Wilcox, TE, South Florida
It was a tough day for Wilcox, who took a ball to the face during the gauntlet drill. To his credit, he vowed to bounce back from the "rough day at the office." But there's no denying he fought the ball while trying to secure several other catches during the workout, as well, seemingly losing confidence in his hands. Wilcox was not able to show above-average athleticism in drills with a 31-inch vertical and a 4.88 40. Teams going back to the tape will see a productive player, but Thursday was not his day.

Add VA Tech's Dalton Keene to the list of combine Winners, too.

Albert O looks useless as a blocker. Good athlete but lacks route running and blocking skills. I'd pass on that likely bust.
Devin Asiasi is my fav TE in the class. He's not going to wow anyone, but he's just solid in every aspect. Sort of a Dwayne Allen, Nick Boyle, Xavier Grimble type.
Cole Kmet's last name should be Meht. He's pretty meh. He doesn't use his size well or have any special athleticism or skills.
Brycen Hopkins has some receiving skills but is small and likely not a very good blocker.
Thaddeus Moss - won't get separation, has no particular catching skills of note.
Trautman - bad athlete, despite his nice 3 cone time.
Dalton Keene - maybe worth a 7th rounder or an UDFA look as a blocker.

This is one of the worst TE classes I've ever seen. I'd only take a couple in the first three rounds, and even that is stretching it.

Shows how little I know !,.....I was beginning to get excited that there was a few more tight ends in this draft that could succeed. I can only base this on what games I have access to , senior bowl and the combine (admittedly that is not much). Think I would still try and draft one this year, even if it was for playing a year or two into the future :(

I disagree that it's a poor TE draft class. It's just not incredibly deep. It runs 10 deep as far as draft worthy TEs. And I wouldn't be surprised if there is a run on TEs starting in the 2nd round. Hopefully the Pats are smart enough to snag a PASS CATCHING TE in round 3.

fixed it for you

I’d be fine with trading or signing a pass catching TE, but I want to draft one as well. This offense is at its best when it has two capable pass catching TEs. The Gronk/Hernandez era and the 8 games of Gronk/Bennett, this offense was unstoppable. If they have Hooper/Draftee, it opens up more space for Edelman & Harry.

Passing on Tight ends the last few years seems way more than Ass9

Armani Levias, TE, Marshall

ANALYSIS
Levias caught three passes for 67 yards against UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl on Monday.

This is a nice little game for the senior to end his career one. Marshall will need a new number-one tight end in 2020.
